History tells us that the consumer hasn't stayed very interested.
Agreed - the better teams may sell tickets, but will you pay to see your local team lose in this league? That is the question right now. They hoped to sell a lot of season tickets so that this would not be a concern, but they started their marketing waaay too late to meet those goals.

If you are a fan of this league, you had better buy tickets, and get your buddies to buy tickets, and get them to get their buddies to buy tickets - win or lose...

As for filling the void, I have to say it probably will, on a much smaller scale. I know when the Steeldogs started, I was skeptical and then I got hooked. I was a fan all 8 years and would still be a fan now if they were still around. I see no problem with supporting a local team that's trying to get off of the ground. Even if the product isn't that good, try to be part of the solution. They can't make it better with no money. They can't get money if they're not selling tickets. I tried for a long time to tell folks that about Steeldogs. And that was a very good product if you like players that play for the love of the game and not money (much like college players). Anyway.

I'm in Texas but I've already got my tickets (as well as two of my friends) to the Alabama @ Texas game in May. I'm interested in it because some of my favorite players are playing in the league. I always thought Saleem Rasheed was a lock in the NFL...maybe I'm wrong but it seems like he had an injury at the beginning of his NFL career with SF and just never got it turned around. Also it will be good to see Reggie Myles and Gerald Dixon on the field again as well as Freddie Millons and some of the other guys. These guys left everything on the field for us as Bama fans when they were in school, we should at least support them as they try to make it back into the NFL, or some, make it into the NFL for the first time. The talent definitely won't be NFL level...the coaching definitely won't be D-1 level...but it will be good football...and the players will be passionate about the games, and I'm looking forward to seeing the Alabama team route the Texas team May 17th! Those of you that are here in Houston get your tickets now...I'd love to meet up with some of ya'll early and tailgate...we could cook some good food and wear our Bama gear and have a great time at a football game IN MAY!!! Also, if you PM me, I may be able to help some of ya'll get a discount.

That is exactly how they hope to sell tickets, and it is why this league has a shot...

If the consumer is interested in seeing slightly-to-less-than NFL level football, then the AAFL may succeed. History tells us that the consumer hasn't stayed very interested.
If you live in Birmingham you really don't have a choice, you take the best you can get and the NFL isn't coming to Alabama, not in my lifetime. The failure of past leagues weren't related to lack of intrerest, it was related to the people running it not understanding how big a committment is needed. the guys who started the AFL which eventually merged with the NFL probably lost money for years and years, but back then people didn't let their bean counters make their long term strategic decisions for them.

Look, the games simply won't be as good as Div 1 college games, but that doesn't mean that they can't be good enough for starving fans...
I agree in year one, but if they survive to year two I believe the overall quality of play will equal to or better than division I, in part because I believe the overall quality of Division I has dropped in the past decade since the NCAA Natzi's put such tight restrictions on practice time.

Yea that is insane. I was looking forward to going to a few games but I didn't want to spend more than about 30 bucks a ticket.
then buy the cheap tickets, its not like it's going to sell out, by the way, have you tried a day of golf recently??? $30 bucs won't buy you lunch, have you seen how far $30 bucs will get you in your SUV??

I agree. If the fans support this league and it makes it into season 2, this could really work...

Why are they trying to fill these huge stadiums? I think they should start in smaller venues first. JMOT.
With nearly $50MM in expenses for the first year, if they have a hard time with these larger venues, the league is in trouble already. And the venues are a tiny portion of their expenses...
