Aaron John's dismissed

so, how does this affect the APR, if at all. is it correct that as long as he finishes his degree that it won't count against us? but if he doesn't stay and complete his degree, then we get negatived for it, right?

if that's the case, then doesn't the APR in some ways push coaches to be more relaxed regarding violations of team rules? after all, it would seem more likely that a kid would have more motivation to stay in school and complete his studies in order to remain eligible. once he's off the team, doesn't that de-motivate some kids from even trying to stay in school?

seems like yet another flaw in the whole system.

Bama mag reports

Aaron Johns, who had not played this season, was dismissed from the team “for violating team policy.” Johns will not have an opportunity to return.

While I hate to see it, this has been the handwriting on the wall since spring... I hope that whatever the problems are, AJ corrects them and has the chance to get back on track in all areas of his life. Growing up only 25 miles from his hometown, hope he doesn't end up like so many HS sports stars in that town (back home trying to live off of his fame as a football player). Aaron, do what should do... stay in school, graduate, and make a good life for yourself. :)

That's a shame, but I have to believe that Coach Shula gave him ample opportunities to get his chit together before resorting to cutting him loose.

I'm sure you're right. CMS has shown a pattern of "thinking before reacting" when handling player/personnel issues. So I would have to believe Johns was given an opportunity to "make it right" but obviously chose not to.

Df...

you are correct, if I understand the rules, and if they don't change them again (which they're considering). It obviously puts an enormous premium on making the right selections. It also will obviously generate a huge incentive to hold off on dismissing a player until there's just no other choice. This could be good, or, it could be bad - for the team and also for the player...

I hate it for our APR

I just never thought this kid was a D1 prospect..............I hoped he would be one of those hard working overachievers with plenty of heart..............I feel he most likely just saw the handwriting on the wall and quit. He got many opportunities last year and never showed much(easy to go down & hated contact) CMS just honored Price 's offer and hoped for what I said. Maybe he will get his act together and get on a DII team.... Jax ST,Samford etc.

Does anyone know if the freshman linebacker we lost in the Freddie Roach mistaken identity, possession of a firearm misdemeanor incident at the beginning of the 2004 season is going to count against his graduating class Academic Progress Rate (APR)?

This rule is going to change the way we think about Vandy.

It's not "crap"...

Much of what is covered by that categorical remark cannot be legally released anyway. Even if they wanted to assuage everybody's curiosity...(and CMS doesn't show much interest in that, in any event)

Why is the media able to announce that X player(s) aren't able to play due to their grades? It seems like this information would be just as off limits as the details of Aaron Johns being removed from the team.

Earnest Nance was his name. Linebacker out of Courtland. I think it will affect the APR. Not sure though.

As I understand it...

they can release the information that player "X" is suspended for academic reasons, but they can't release his grades nor comment directly on the topic of how much he missed the cut. All other rules-related reasons fall under "team policy," or "team rules," or some such general language. I generally know what the reason is and the truth of the matter is that they range over every dumb thing that college kids do...

That's super news to hear that he is getting things in order. Hope to see him playing again somewhere and on a college graduation roll.
