Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Well I posted a lengthy post in the other thread that got removed in order to keep all the QB discussion here. Fortunately, or unfortunately I am not going to try to rewrite it all here again. In summary, CNS and both QBs made a mistake this spring and summer not sitting down together and discussing what was going to happen this offseason. They all let things fester without talking them out. I hate this happened this way and they all will regret not taking the time to talk this out behind closed doors. Hopefully, everyone learns something from this experience. Avoiding confrontation and touchy topics on a team is not a good idea. They need to be talked out behind closed doors so that everyone is on the same page and does not let things build up even more.

Really suprised this did not happen this spring. Makes sense now from some of the things I have heard about the QBs distancing themselves from the coaches. This needs to be fixed today and we all should never hear word of it from here forward. Not likely to happen this way.
Here you go. Unfortunately, some long posts got caught in the middle:

Hopefully, I can say this tactfully to get my opinion across without too much backlash from other Bama fans.

First I will say, hindsight is always 20/20.

IMO, which in the big scheme of things means nothing, Saban made a mistake this spring not getting both QBs together early and sitting them down to talk about what was coming this spring, summer and fall because of the championship game. I know all along he has said there would be an open competition and the player who won the team would play. Unfortunately, it sounds like he and the coaching staff just let things fester without talking to the two QBs together. As a team to make sure everyone was on the same page and continued working together. We all knew there were going to be some battles, some sides taken and some hard feelings when this thing played itself out.

I had heard more than once there seemed to be some distance between both QBs and the coaches. My intitial thought was no big deal because of the hands off period coaches have with players. But it is a surprise to me if the coaches did not sit down with both Jalen and Tua just to prepare them for their competition and how to handle that process as well as the obvious media frenzy.

Jalen’s father really stepped on CNS toes with his comments. Then Saban made his about Jalen being with the team was an unknown. That surprised me a little. Would have thought they would have had conversations rather than he just based that off Jalen’s fathers comments. Jalen was taken back from it as well. Now with that said. Jalen should have went to coach and said. “Hey, my father does not speak for me” and cleared the air then.

Almost like Jalen said. Everyone decided not to discuss the elephant in the room and just looked away. I think they all will realize that was a mistake on everyone’s part. Someone should have addressed this whole situation behind closed doors early on.

We will see how this plays out. I dont like how it has started with Jalen coming off as an “outsider” almost. He has done a lot for Bama. Several mistakes here. The talking to the media needs to stop today and they need to all get together, hash this out and we should never hear anything more from here forward.

Thats not how this usually goes though.

Thank You HSV!!

I may wish later you didn’t repost. LOL

If this in fact the case, then I go back to what I said earlier in this thread, Jalen's continued presence, if he is relegated to backup and mop duty, will not be healthy for the team. If he really feels this way then he should go ahead and transfer.
I have to agree. He no longer sounds like a team player and that could be detrimental. He can finish his degree and graduate in December, with two years to play elsewhere. Better to get Mac the reps...

It was a worthwhile post, as was 4Q's. Just trying to get organized. Obviously the QB posts were going to overwhelm completely the other news about fall camp...

The bad thing about it is, once the genie is out of the bottle, getting him back in is near impossible......I agree the coaches should have dealt with it, thought I don’t know what kind of dynamic is going on behind the scenes..... I hope the whole distance thing isn’t a distraction

It's conjecture that the coaches didn't sit them down and discuss it. My bet is that did happen.

Mac looks like a real talent. As long as this doesn't hurt the locker room, this could actually help Alabama move past Jalen and into the future.

Love Jalen, but today is a new day. He needs to find a way to contribute or move aside.

I agree...... Mac is a great passer and will only get better

I think you saw today what has been festering all summer. Jalen’s first real opportunity to speak out. What he said was not suprising. Unfortunately, those comments should have been said to CNS and not to the public. Especially his comments about no one being bold enough to approach the subject. Well, that works two ways. If you want to be the man and pilot the ship, then you need to speak up before it hits the iceberg. And it does you no good to only speak to the passengers. You better talk to the captain first.

To be honest, Jalen was under appreciated by fans.

Of course, that has nothing to do with how Jalen should’ve handled himself today.

I agree about djinns and bottles. What's done and said is now irretrievable. However, knowing what I know at this point, I'm not willing to blame the coaching staff for anything, based on Jalen's remarks. On the contrary, I'm inclined to think that there's not much they could have done to satisfy him. Certainly there's nothing they could have said which would have soothed his father. We'll never hear it, but their POV would be very interesting...

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Here's Shelby's (4Q) post in the other thread:

Jalen made a mistake born of frustration. He did it at an incredibly inopportune time.

I understand the frustration. He went from reigning true freshman SEC offensive player of the year to fighting for his job in about 120 days. Really, more like 45 — the time between the day before the 2017 Mississippi State game to halftime of the CFP Final.

Now he feels an NFL career, and all that goes with it, slipping away. Believe me, at an entirely different level, in an entirely different arena, I know how he feels.

He’s right in that he had created a brand — calm, classy, imperturbable under pressure. This interview is entirely inconsistent with that brand. It’s too early to say that this mis-step torpedoed the brand. But it definitely didn’t help.

Another poster cited that Jalen has distanced himself in the locker room. I don’t know if he has or not. But I do know that it’s the first instinct for what we introverts do when threatened.

Jalen’s in a frustrating place. What’s causing most of the frustration is that, for the first time in his 20 years on earth, he’s confronted a limitation that he’ll not likely overcome — passing a football at the elite (top 10) level of college football.

Those were the words of a man who has tasted the highest point of athletic success, and is feeling it slipping away

Think of it in terms of a Baseball team. He would still be our #2 starter. An extremely important role. In football, thats one play away from being the starter. And would be a dang good one. Even without Tua. I think Bama had as good a chance as any team in the country winning the NC this year. Lets all not forget that part. Now, with that said. Regardless how this plays out. If you cant continue to be a “team” player, then you are likely to get removed. This goes for the starting QB or the 4th string punter. They all need to keep that in mind.

True. I've looked over and over at Jalen's interview and I just don't know what the coaches could - or should - have done which would have satisfied him and made him happy. I fear that the only thing would have been to tell him he was the starter and they obviously couldn't have done that. What else? Pat his hand and tell him "There, there?" I'm lost. Anyone have any what would have mollified his feelings?

Yeah this is something I was mentioning earlier. It sounds like Jalen wanted a definitive answer one way or the other before now as to whether he was still QB1 or QB2.

But CNS has made it quite clear for months that this is now a QB1A vs. QB1B situation and that there would be a Fall Camp competition to decide the pecking order.

That competition would hinge on Two main points..... Who wins over the team and/while properly distributing the ball to the other players on the team.

Another Caveat was who would show the right kind of leadership in keeping the focus and goals team oriented and not 'Me' oriented and to not draw negative attention to yourself.

Of those areas I'd say Jalen was already in the process of losing the team barring a substantial improvement in play directly related to ball distribution....

Until today though he has 99% always come off as Team 1st with his words and actions..... but my goodness did he blow that up something fierce.

I lost count of the I's and Me's at about the same rate I lost count of the We's in Tua's interview.

Just a really really unfortunate and disappointing turn of events.

I agree 100%, what happened in the past is the past. Jalen most likely won’t be the starter but the best thing he can do is to put all the “transfer talk” behind him for the 2018 season and be a team player. I’m sure there were things that Tua learned from Jalen but I think that Jalen could learn about being a quality backup from Tua. Let’s say Jalen’s name is call upon in a big game because Tua got injured or something, you are a backup with 26 wins under your belt, you can get it in the game and redeem yourself. Even if that isn’t the case, just having a guy the caliber of Jalen Hurts on the team goes a long way, I hope Jalen, Jalen’s Dad, and CNS can squash this.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Is there any question at all by anyone here that Jalen has lost the starter job?

I realize we still have a few weeks to go before the first game but just wondered what the consensus is.

Done deal?

I am kinda in that camp myself.............and, you guys obviously know a lot more about what goes on behind the scenes than me. I am not going to blame the coaches either. They may have spoke to them, and Jalen is just speaking out of turn because he is ticked. As to what one needs to do to mollify him, I think you hit it on the nail head...............Dad cast the die with his comments, and did his son no favors.
