Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Up until Saturday, when Jalen kinda put his foot in his mouth, the only thing he’s been guilty of is not being as gifted of a passer as Tua. I’d hate to see this end the way it seems like it might. I guess I was just too hopeful that they’d be Super Friends QBs and everything would workout peachy for all parties.

I know it is tough to go from BMOC to Backup and I feel for him. But maybe it is time to put up or shut up. After the last three games and A-Day I would recommend shut up. We have had several unhappy QB's lately and if makes me wonder about the communication.

I am guilty of this, too. I was hoping things would work out and both guys would have a role on the team that helped make us stronger as a team. I remember the feeling of going from a guy who had started all of his life to mostly sitting on the bench from high school basketball days. It wasn't fun, but it was life. I had to learn that I could either stop playing or work harder to help the team any way I could. It was a humbling lesson in life, but it prepared me for other situations I would face later. I hope Jalen works his way through his frustration and works hard to help the team. The dude is a very talented player and seems to be a good person, so I hope he figures things out.

I don't disagree with what his mother said, though I wish she hadn't said it. This will only die down when everyone stops talking about it. But consider what this mother has been witnessing.

A lot of Alabama fans believed that Jalen was a young man with incredible character and poise through two seasons as the starter at Alabama. Then, for the first time, he says things that are selfish and those 2+ years of evidence about his character is thrown out the window.

There isn't much of that here, but there is a ton of it out there on other social media sites. People are taking sides, Alabama or Jalen. Yes, he should have kept that in the locker room, but this is the same Jalen Hurts who congratulated Tua openly when he had to know that he had just lost his job to the young man.

I hate that he stepped in it like this, but I believe that he is still a great young man and I hope that Alabama fans can put this behind them and get behind him again. He will probably never start for Alabama again - may never play for Alabama again - but he has been a great ambassador for your program.

JMO, and Roll Tide!

ohhhh no doubt at all. All of us said things at 20 yrs old that we shouldn't have. Only difference is....most of us weren't on a national stage.

None of us know for sure what, or if, CNS sat them down and told them how things were going to be. I am of the opinion that CNS does not always do a good job getting his point across, or rather he speaks in terms that are difficult to decipher. This is okay when talking to the media and booster groups, but IMO may not be how to address this with two young players, both who really want to know the pecking order or where they really stand heading into the new season. My point is that it is okay to be all business and aloof with the media, but I don't think this is how you address the issue with two 20 year old kids. If I am wrong, then I will accept the flack, but if I am right CNS has done both of them a disservice.

He likely told them both publicly and privately....the same thing. “Go win the team”.

I have very little concern that Coach wasn’t clear with his words. They might have preferred an answer he didn’t have, but that’s not saying he wasn’t clear.

Lack of clarity isn’t Nick Saban.

He let them compete in fall camp, and it cleared itself up in less than 48 hours.

We have a new OC and a new QB coach than we did 2 years ago when those other qbs transferred. You know what is the same then as now, though? Jalen Hurts. Maybe he never really was a team player. Maybe, privately, it was always about his building his "brand".

You know who's happier than anybody about this right now? Urban Meyer.

Is there any question at all by anyone here that Jalen has lost the starter job?
I had my doubts until his little tirade yesterday, which directly contradicted what Saban said he was looking for out of the QBs.

All I know is this. Jalen has always seemed like a fine young man, and I have watched him in success. I have watched him in failure. I am always more impressed to see a young fella rise up after failure...and attack the issue again with a new plan for success. I like people who try. Jalen will compete. So will Tua. That youngun is gifted as well. But Jalen is a calm and quiet competitor. He will go to work. Hope he stays. The team will support a hard working competitor whether he wins the top job or not. Good luck to #2. I wish he had chosen to speak on something else to the reporters, but he did not. I once made some comments about an order I was given in 1971 while in the military. That order was grossly unfair, and my First Sgt admitted it was. BUT........he made me sit in his office for hours while he decided what my punishment would be for ignoring the order. He wanted to bust me and place me into the brig for 15 days. It was a lesson that I did not forget. I was right.....but the way in which I handled it was insane! I won the dispute...but I lost the war because I was assigned every crap detail the First Sgt could find. Good luck to Jalen. Go get 'em hoss!! Roll Tide!!

I’m reminded that it’s easy to show class when everything is going your way - real character is revealed how you react to adversity.

Given that classes don't start until the 22nd, he may have a change of heart about being here for the season.

Maybe you can now undo all of those "dislikes" you've been handing out for weeks ;)

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

If this had to happen, let it happen now. One way or another, the situation and any misunderstandings will be dealt with early in fall camp. Whether Jalen stays or goes — and the expectations for all involved — will be addressed once and for all.

Yes, and it's very possible he's never really had to deal with much until now. Maybe his dad thought college would allow Jalen to continue to grow as a QB, but I think it's pretty safe to say Jalen reached his QB ceiling when he failed to learn how to stay in the pocket and let plays develop and go thru progressions.

With about 15 hours to graduate, that would probably be foolish. I really hope they (Jalen and coaches) smooth things over. For the record, Jalen needs to go into CNS's office and eat crow and say he messed up and that he can't control what his parents say but he ought to control what he says.

But it would be in the team's best interest to have Jalen accept he's not going to start but be there as an emergency backup in case Tua were to get injured before Mac Jones is ready.

Then in December CNS can say: "Here's your degree. Thanks for all you did for us. Good luck moving forward."

I think it's important to him to get his degree. However, I mentioned before that one possibility might be that he would withdraw from the team and just finish his degree as an academic student. I think the odds of that soared yesterday...

What a crazy turn of events. I feel so bad for him, but every player knows the deal when they come to Bama. The best player will play, end of story.

That would allow him to maintain 2 years of eligibility.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Was it a rumor or did Tua or his family actually say after the CG last year that he was going to transfer if he didn’t get put in for the second half? I don’t think the situations are exactly the same - but it does show incredible desire to compete, the difficulty in competing against the best of the best, as well as some downfalls when suddenly things don’t go your way on the field when that’s not something you’ve had to deal with most of your life. We sometimes forget that Saban deals with this at every position.
