Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I am watching College Football Live on ESPN. Gene Chizik just said that, going purely off of Jalens' comments, that there was a lack of communication. I will paraphrase a little but he did go on to say that all positions are open to competition. That made me think. Should communication about position battles be different based on position? Is it fine to not communicate specifically to the RBs about the competition but thoroughly communicate a position that traditionally doesn't switch out players such as QB?
This represents one of the major differences between Saban and most other head coaches. He does not presume to know enough to pass judgement in other programs.

I can buy that communication with QB is different, but ultimately, it's on Hurts and his folks to cowboy up and talk to the coaches.

You just made me wonder if some reporter is going to be silly enough to ask his opinion on the OSU/Meyer mess that is happening right now.

I keep coming back to the same point and that is that I just don't know what sort of special counseling he was expecting. If they'd taken him aside and told him the truth, that he was behind Tua in passing drills in summer and he's behind him now, does anyone really think that would have made Jalen a happy camper? Of course not. He's unhappy because he hasn't been told the one thing which Saban can't tell him, that he's the starter. Both those boys know exactly how they stand in the competition. There's a certain amount of hypocrisy going on...

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I am pretty sure Coach Saban has a standing policy that the QB competition will be decided by "who wins the team."

That was true when Jalen was a freshman and when he was a sophomore and it is the case this year when Jalen is a Junior. After watching the Auburn and Georgia games I think one has won the team, coaches and fans. Then there was the A Day game for the other to show improvement and get back in the race. He failed.

I don't know why communication is needed. I certainly don't need someone to tell me who the starter is.

Its worth noticing that Josh Jacob tweeted about how Everyone on the outside doesn't know what's going on and how we shouldn't assume... So there is possibility that there is something going on we may not know about. We've gone back and forth on this and You can bet Saban will have some kind of message he will share with us, players through media tonight.

Just reported on jox about the dreaded "player only" meeting. I hope it gets all the player's minds right, but that had to be an interesting meeting (or will be, if the meeting hasn't taken place yet).

Earle cutting straight to the quick.

Jalen has no one to blame unless he blames competition and that's what makes Bama so great under CNS. True freshmen come into the program and compete and unseat upper classmen sometimes.

Or, Jalen could blame himself. He was gift-wrapped an unprecedented opportunity to have the attention focused on him in the Spring and yet his opportunity was basically wasted and he was outplayed by another QB whose name is not Tua.

You said that better than I could have.......and I agree. It’s apparent to everyone on the outside, and should be apparent to both where they stand

In GC's defense he stated that at the outset -- he did not know what was going on inside the locker room or program. He was much more reserved in his comments re CNS than the others...

David Morris of QB Country joined Travis Reier on Southern Fried Sports Tide 102.9 to talk about Jalen Hurts'

I don't know what OU's QB situation is after this year but I've been thinking that could be a great place for him. Kyler Murray is already a run first QB who struggles with passing and if he puts up big numbers for them this year then I would think OU would want to keep that going. Jalen could be the perfect guy to come and in keep the momentum with the same offense and similar style QB.

I think that was Monday and the program evidently hasn't entirely imploded yet, but just another indication that Hurts shouldn't have cried to the media.

I saw a clip of Pierschbacher saying the meeting was an opportunity for people to speak their minds and then move on. It sounded as if Jalen’s comments were part of that discussion. Regardless, he said all focus is on the team and getting better.
