Alabama QB competition article

I don't think mutiny was overstated. I really believe that some players on the team were frustrated with Hurts and there was an incident at the halftime at the Auburn game. Several of connected posters have stated that. I think We could've had Ross if we didn't have a QB situation. Had we played Tua earlier, we would've got Ross. Tua was Ross's host when he visited the campus. Remember we had weird year with recruiting, so we have to consider all factors involved.

Had we lost the championship game, We probably would've lost several players to transfer: Jeudy, Smith, Ruggs, Tua, Harris. Those are the names I'm assuming that could've left.

Actually, the wide receiver that signed with Clemson, the highest rated wr in the state of Alabama, said earlier in the year that he didn't like Alabama's offense (paraphrasing). Since our offense with Tua at the helm is way different, I guess that's an indictment of Hurts and the offense we ran when he was behind center.

This is not the article I was talking about because it's not his direct quote, but, “Jalen Hurts
probably hurt their chances with Ross. Alabama is probably selling the fact that it’s going to have a passing quarterback and they’re going to open up the offense and pass with Locksley as the new offensive coordinator. ...https://n.rivals.com/news/take-two-will-alabama-keep-state-s-top-player-justyn-ross-home-

The 6-foot-4, 197-pound prospect was in Atlanta for the game where he saw Jalen Hurts complete 10 of 18 pass attempts and only throw for fewer than 100 yards. Calvin Ridley was the only wide receiver to have a reception in that game.

While, clearly, Alabama got the result it wanted in the game, for a wide receiver with options, it was not a performance that was exciting.
“I feel like they could have opened it up a bit more, but they didn’t really have a chance to reveal their passing game too much,” Ross said.
When asked what the Tide have to do to impress him moving forward, his answer centered around making sure other receivers outside of Ridley are involved.
“I do feel like they have to spread the ball around more, but it’ll come in due time,” Ross said. “I was expecting a bit more, to be honest. I didn’t get that. I’ll probably get that in the future, though.”
That did change in the Fresno State game this past weekend. Eight receivers or tight ends caught passes against the Bulldogs, but none of the pass catchers had more than 45 yards.
I have heard from several recruits who have said other programs have negatively recruited against Alabama when it comes to the team’s passing offense. It didn’t hurt the Tide in the 2017 class as they signed four of the nation’s best in Henry Ruggs III, Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith and Tyrell Shavers.

Alabama has some work to do.

I would note that the receivers signed in the 2017 class had been recruited for years, back when we had a legitimate passing offense, and yes, I do know the statistics for 2016. Kiffin did an admirable job, imo, working with what he had, with the jet sweeps, the quick outs, etc.

I remember that comment. That was when I thought that Bama might not land him.

Mutiny is a very strong word. It is open rebellion against established authority. Some have suggested that, I just don't believe it. Discontent, dissatisfaction, frustration: yes; mutiny: no. I know just as a fan I felt the same dissatisfaction and frustration, though I was a Jalen supporter til AU. I can imagine how the WRs and RBs felt, especially seeing Ridley and D. Harris express it on the playing field (I disagree with their actions, though I understand.)

I agree that offensive personnel would have been tempted to leave. I posted as much after the NC game, noting how Tua's performance had ramifications reaching far beyond that one NC, including recruiting. IMO, it likely extended CNS's tenure and success - though those things are impossible to know.

I know some of his family relatively well. What made him choose Clemson was the depth chart and Clemson had 3 recent first round draft picks at WR. He was going to have to fight Juedy, Ruggs and after the catch especially wanted no parts in trying to unseat Devonte. Not saying he is afraid of competition but if you are making a business decision which one of these two situations will give you a chance to start as a freshman or sophomore. Our big 3 will be on campus a minimum of two more years. I know its hard to believe but the kid was trying to make a business decision and every school that was recruiting him let him know he would sit or get little playing time for two years. They think he is a 3 and done guy.

We have never been this good at receiver. Scary all 3 of those guy could go 1st or second round. Actually excited to see what Shavers will look like this year. WR recruiting is more impacted by QB's that are in their recruiting class. Tua had a big haul for us. Potentially 3 first rounders.

I can't really speak to the Ross situation but what the others are saying about offensive casualties by transfer and recruiting is true. There's no way we could continue the WR and RB hauls if we'd continued with the QB being most of the offense in tough games. And there's no way we would have held on to the offensive talent we have, leaving it on the shelf unused. Players have to get PT to get drafted...

Wow! He is both shifty and fast!
I think he’s going to be a phenom for us in the return game alone Earl!!! He reminds me so much of Deshaun Jackson for the Cal Bears and then the Eagles in the NFL.

Just a legit game breaking WR and KR/PR type of guy. I still can’t believe we got him out of Texas!!! He’s ELECTRIC!!!!

I’d say a mutiny is overstated too, especially with Coach Saban there.

I still think Hurts starts against Louisville, and Coach Saban let’s the first few games show folks the difference and then by the first SEC game Tua should be taking over for good. Just what I think with the way Saban generally handles these decisions. Had Tua not gotten hurt during the Spring he goes into the Louisville game #1....

Now I 100% agree with you that it could have caused some transfers if no switch were made, but I was just pointing out that strong skill players normally follow a good charismatic QB in their recruiting class. If you look at that alone you can see Tua's leadership. We don't get those 3 guys and Najee with out his leadership.

I highly doubt Jalen will start. Too much risk to lose Tua and his brother. Look at last year, Saban already gave Jalen multiple opportunities... Lost at Auburn and woulda lost NC game. Saban held off until literally the second half of NC game to finally make the change. Anyways, I think Saban would love to gauge how serious Jalen’s father is by starting Tua. If Tua proves himself so be it... if Tua chokes, THEN give Jalen a chance. Not vice versa.

I think the QB that will start against Louisville is the one that made CNS run out on the field like a thirteen year old, enabled him to get a 6th National Championship, and led him to state that he was happier than he has ever been.

I have a question:

https://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf...bama_jalen_hurts_manning_passing_academy.html

Why isn't Tua attending Manning camp? I mean everyone is saying Tua should be the starter, so if that's the case, then should he be the one attending Manning camp?

Tagovailoa just got back from the Elite 11 camp. Yes? So maybe he or the coaches thought it better for him to be on campus working out with the UA receuvers he'll be playing with on Saturdays this fall.

My guess, which is likely 100% wrong is this. The Manning camp wants to invite the likely starter. Since Coach Saban has not yet announced who that will be at Alabama, the camp assumes the incumbent will be the starter. So, Saban not announcing Tua as the starter cost him a spot at the Manning Academy. On the other hand, maybe this is a subtle announcement of Jalen being the starter, though I hope not.

Or maybe the staff felt like Hurts needed the Manning camp more than Tua. Or, the staff wanted to send Hurts to the Manning camp and devote as many reps to Tua as they could in Hurts' absence. All absolute pure speculation on my part.
I looked up Manning Camp site and it seems like they are the one who does the invitations.

Without being told by Saban himself, this is as close to 100% not the case as possible.
