Alabama QB competition article

[h=1]Herbstreit says Tagovailoa could lead 'Alabama's best team yet'[/h]
Looks like Herbstreit is thinking the same thing the rest of us are. More rat poison

"I'm most looking forward to see how dominant Alabama will be with Tua (Tagovailoa) at quarterback," Herbstreit said. "Bama has never had this kind of QB, and he — along with their typical outstanding defense and special teams — will make this Bama team maybe the best Saban has had yet!"

What does Herbstreit know?

I've said that I think Bama pushes averaging close to 500 yards per game. I'd be even more confident of that if I thought Tua played the majority of most games, but I suspect we'll develop quick, early leads and in about half of our games he won't see much action past mid to late 3rd quarter. Insert Jalen to do his thing of running and killing the clock. Even with this is possible we still push 500 yards per game cause I could easily see Jalen running up some rushing totals late in the game when defenses are tired.

Isn't that exactly what the article said ?

Article says KH thinks Tua will start and our offense will be dynamic. Another person (Simmons) is quoted as saying we need to find a way to use Jalen.

I'm speculating we can average close to 500 yards per game, which would be an increase of just about 56 more yards per game, but also be higher than Bama has ever averaged, IIRC. I checked it recently and I think the most we've averaged under CNS is around 470 per game one year (maybe 2012???).

How dynamic our offense is with Tua really depends on how aggressive Coach Saban chooses to be. Will he really turn Tua loose to try to get the maximum production from him or will he keep a tight rein on him? Tua may be the best college QB Saban has ever coached, and while AJ was good, Tua could fall into the potential "superstar" category, a weapon at QB that Saban has never had in his arsenal before so we don't know how he will utilize it.

you cant "not turn him loose"..no matter the playcalling unless we're running a wishbone. he's going to find guys open. and we've had plenty of open receivers running open downfield the past 2 years. i'm sure they cant wait for the season to start

I really think we will see Jalen start vs Louisville. I think Tua comes in on third possession and that they rotate often the first 3-4 games. I think he lets them duel on the field and winner takes all

I think he doesn't use Jalen as another RB or WR. We have plenty of each.

My guess Tua wins out. Jalen bales at some point and Mac gets cleanup duty the second half of the year.

I agree, but for Jalen personally I still believe it would be in his best interest to go ahead and transfer before fall camp. It would give him time off and a chance to play his final two years starting in the fall of 2019. The hard part would be finding the right program for his skill set.

I could see Jalen taking the first snap but I would be absolutely shocked if it lasts 3-4 games.
Seems odd to have a “Heisman threat” QB that hasn’t been officially named as the starter.

A little but anyone with eyes can see there is something special about Tua. Heck he was ranked #7 by Daniel Jeremiah from NFL.com on his "QBs to watch" list and the QBs ahead of have all played a lot more and are draft eligible after this year IIRC.

Coach knows better than me. But in my mind, going this route would be counterproductive if we are trying to move forward, keep our momentum going in recruiting, etc. What if Jalen goes out and has a good couple of series against a weak Louisville defense(which I suspect he would)? The controversy would go on until we faced the first good defense we play all year. I don't know. I think the answer is clear, barring injury. Why muddy things up and create a mess in the team's minds if you are pretty sure what the answer is going to be?

I think CajunCrimson may be right - that's what Coach did in 2016, we "Started" a guy in the opener, even though the staff had already decided they were not going to stick with as the starter, for whatever reasons only Coach Saban will ever know.

But my concern is what RedWave says - because the fact is, Jalen IS a Very Good QB when he's not facing a particularly good Defense - and Louisville is NOT Likely to have a good defense this year. Of course, that's just the problem, isn't it? - he FAR TOO GOOD a QB (against weak defenses) to just bench out of hand - but we KNOW that he's never going to be able to cut it against the level of defenses we'll see IF we want to win another NC.

If Jalen goes 6 for 7 passing and runs for another 50 yards, and we score TD's on each of our first three series, THEN what do you do?

As they say in business - "the Good is the enemy of the Great".

(Responding to CajunCrimson's post above:

Honestly, this is sort of what I expect to see happen - but probably not until 2-4 games into the season.

BUT - I think it's going to be a huge mistake for Jalen, IF his goal is still to play in the NFL. IF his life goal has changed to simply being a great COLLEGE QB, then he can still 100% accomplish this, some place like UNC, Texas Tech, Washington State, or maybe some place like ULM, MTSU, Memphis, .... or FAU.....

TWO PROBLEMS: First - the problem for the team - FWIW, I'm not completely sure that TUA doesn't transfer 4 games into the season if he's NOT named the #1 QB AND taking MOST of the snaps. And honestly, I'd hate it, but I wouldn't blame him - if he's still sharing the job with Jalen at that point. Tua would be the ONLY starter, hands down, at most other college programs in the nation. It would be a very LOW risk for him to leave Alabama. Can you imagine what Tua would do at Ohio State? Or Clemson?

Second - the problem for Jalen. I think it's beyond rational debate that Jalen is a great guy and a great teammate, but he's Never going to be an NFL QB. I hope SOMEONE he trusts can sit him down and show him some film of Blake Sims in 2014 - a guy who was EVERY BIT as good a RB as Jalen is, And - let's be honest - TWICE AS GOOD A PASSER when under pressure.

Where is Blake Sims today?
Where is Braxton Miller today? Playing in the NFL - that's where......

So if I am reading the last couple of posts correctly, since neither Tua or Jalen has redshirted they both have a redshirt year to use. Also with the new redshirt rule, both could play 4 games this fall, leave the team after the 4th game, transfer, sit out a year and still play in 2019 with Tua having 3 years and Jalen 2 years to play. If that is the case then that is exactly what will happen. Non starter leaves and Mac Jones is the backup.

Basically. I just hope it doesn't take 4 games. At the very very least I hope we have named Tua starter by the A&M game.

I still think there is a shot Tua is the starter before the Louisville game or maybe by the end of that game. But that's just because I think there is a clear gap between Tua and Jalen.

The reason I think there is a shot Tua is starter before the game is because CNS has never been in this situation. The argument for a competition seems to be "that's how he has always done it" but that's what people said about starting Jalen and benching Jalen for Tua too. Saban had never done those things because he had never been in those situations not because he has one way of doing things. I realize I could be completely off though.

Under the new rules he could play 4 games, sit out & graduate in December. Go somewhere next year & play immediately for 2 more years.

I am pretty sure that he could also play up to 4 games, transfer this year to another program, then be eligible to play first game next season. Blake Barnett played 3 or 4 games, transferred to AS, then was ruled eligible for the first game of the next season, and that was before the 4 games ncaa rule.

Of course, so could Tua if for some crazy reason Saban chose Jalen Hurts, and I suspect that is what Tua would do, and I wouldn't blame him either. Why would he sit 3 years to play one when he's so much better than the other guy.
