I don't think that she was focused on Saban. I think that she was most disappointed at the fan reaction to Jalen's remarks. Maybe I am reading it wrong.

That, in essence, is the problem with all of the Hurts and Hurts family comments during this offseason process. Everything they say has a positive way to contextualize it but also a very easy to frame negative contextualization.

Dad's "free agent" statement, frankly accurate but not a great thing to say w/r/t the existing circumstance with Alabama.

Jalen's comments yesterday, reasoned but perhaps you can argue he threw the entire staff under the bus for not being bold enough to talk frankly to him.

Mom's statement, likely accurate to how a fanbase turns on people but there is some stuff in there that seems to suggest players get gag orders because bad things are happening in Tuscaloosa.


They've acquitted themselves well but they haven't really respected the school that is about to give him a degree and let him transfer anywhere after this season. A lot of this is just the same ol' spilt milk and sour grapes parents have when their son get pulled or not allowed to start in HS football.

I agree. There are several things that could be said about coaching that allowed circumstances to come to this point. The lack of a QB coach for JH's first two seasons, an offensive coordinator last year who didn't particularly fit the college game, the decision to not give Tua meaningful snaps before the Auburn game. There could be reasons for any one or all of these but the one thing I do not understand is why there would not be close communication with the two young men setting out how the fall camp would be conducted and how their performance would be evaluated.

As stated earlier in the thread CNS's comment of "I don't know", I believe was taken out of context to a degree, and would be a comment he would like to have back.

One could characterize that as a more significant mistake from a coach considered to be the GOAT compared to a 20 year old expressing very mixed and hurt feelings. None of us are infallible.

We all go through various life crises and come out the other side. I believe Jalen will as well!

This is very true. As valuable as Jalen has been, and only the most ignorant gump is unappreciative of his contributions, his mother seems to think that we're in his debt. That's now how this works.

I’m not sure what Jalen wanted. I haven’t been able to follow football this off-season and even I know it was going to be a competition. I’m always of the belief that each side has an opinion about the way things played out and then there’s the truth somewhere in the middle. But I do have to realize we are dealing with teenagers and 20-21 year olds.

She's upset with the whole situation and lashed out. Anybody and everybody is a potential target. The part about being compliant and controlled is a clear shot at Saban. The thing at the end about fans turning on Jalen but not the president (assuming Trump there) is just plain weird.

I never thought I'd say this about them, but emotions are running high, and given where they've already gone with this, more inflammatory language from the Hurts camp wouldn't surprise me. If that happens, look for an instantaneous and permanent parting of the ways.

The Hurts family had to know that you only come here if you want to compete. This is clearly true at every single position now. Haven't really had a QB test case for this because QB is such a weird position where player development and game experience is worth so much relative to OLB, OG, or RB. Jalen Hurts just didn't get enough space between him and the competition via his in-game experience. His improvement in turnovers from 2016 to 2017 was almost wholly due to him not even trying to throw things he knew his limited accuracy could pull off while also having less rushing attempts. He simply didn't get better and he was a very rough-around-the-edges quarterback when he got here. This opened the door, as his daddy said, and I haven't really seen anything in the spring to suggest he's done anything but crack it open a bit more despite Tua being injured.

I'm going to assume that Saban has already settled this. It is simple - call Jalen into his office and get answers, then dictate policy. Jalen and his family get on board, or not. But it starts and ends with a one on one meeting with Jalen.

Jalen already said he represents himself, he represents his family, and the coaches don't control this.

Ironically, He's going to prove to make Saban right......because he's likely to lose the team......

Saban was asked if Hurts would be here. Saban said "I have no idea"......(which basically I took as "It's up to him")

Life is full of choices -- if you wait long enough, it all usually works out.

That's why Coach never talks about who should be in and shouldn't until there's nothing left to do but talk.....Jalen skipped past everything else and decided to just move straight to "just talk"

The actual quote does not have the same implications!

I don't think that anyone is blaming this on Saban. Even if Saban didn't meet all of Jalen's expectations, he is still Saban so deserves the benefit of the doubt.

That is because the full quote has rarely been seen in print. Typical media. Fake news.

This needs to be amended thusly:

What we saw of Mac Jones in the Spring, I think we could do a Coker-style offense with him if he got pressed into duty. Still I want Jalen to be on the team because he still could theoretically be our best quarterback if Enos can mold his ability to execute consistently. Tua is an above average college QB athlete but Jalen has NFL skill position level of athletic ability. If he could execute just a bit better on a few types of plays, he could win a Heisman here. But it is not worth it for locker room morale if the attitude taken is so sour.

I don’t see any reason why this episode has the potential to divide the locker room. Every player on offense and the defense stands to benefit if Tua is the starter because of better ball distribution and ball control. I see what is playing out as a crisis averted for the program and coach’s legacy long term.

Hurts benefited from this same drama a couple seasons ago by the Barnett family. It didn’t work out for them so they should see that it won’t work out for them either.

I finally watched the video of Jalen's interview. I think I have a different take than a lot of people. I don't think it was that bad. I think that when Jalen said, "this thing in uncontrollable" he was referring to trying to control what the media and fans say about the QB situation. In that case, he's right. The coaches can't control it. They also can't control what his family says. The media will try to play it up as a huge controversy and a potential problem for the team, but that's what they always do. They sensationalize everything in an attempt to sell newspapers and increase readership on their web sites. But I don't think this will be a problem.

Jalen has said that he's not leaving. I take that to mean he's committed to competing for the starting job. It also means he's committed to being the backup if that's the way things work out. We'll see. I'm sure he's been frustrated and he got a chance to vent a little. OK, fine, no harm done as long as it doesn't become the norm. And I don't think Saban will allow that to happen.

IMHO, The bottom line is this - Saban is going to play the QB who he believes gives us the best chance to win. The players understand that and that's what they want, also. I don't think the team will be divided over the QB competition.

Second, to say you haven't seen Hurts demonstrate NFL quality athletic ability at all in the last two years is nonsense. You have. Critique his passing. Criticize his processing. His athletic ability at the QB position is world class and nearly unmatched. He is a superlative athlete.
