Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Until I hear that Jalen is going thru progressions and finding his second or third option I don't think anything has changed.

Jalen has always been a big, one play hit wonder. If I'm guessing those two bombs were pre-snap determinations. Good for him, but that's never been his problem. His problem is what happens when the pre-snap read isn't obvious and his first read is covered. And then there's the issue of completing 3rd and long situations he's always struggled with.

Again, until I see him do things he's never been able to do, I doubt much at all has changed.

Look, I get it. Some people isn't sure about Jalen's improvements... but he is making reads... He has Dan Eno... that's the key. he's learning to go to 2, 3rd reads. He's been working on that. I get that we've been hard on his QB play... and maybe it's fair, but we need to look at it from different perspective... If he's really trying to improve.. can't we give him the benefit of doubt and let him show us what he improved on.

What a great problem this is for the Tide. 2 really good quarterbacks who do different things really well. I give Tua the edge, because his running abilities are greater than Jalen's throwing indecisions. For most games, either one can win.

I'm hoping for his improvement! My point is news that he hit a couple of long throws really isn't proof he's improved. We've seen him do this before, in a few instances.

And I know he's trying and he's getting good coaching, maybe for the first time from a QB coach. Again great.

But, he's dug the hole he's in with his poor play and I don't think it's unreasonable to wait and see if he's really improved....that's all I'm saying.

The training days video showed a little of Enos working with all of the QB's on reads. Not sure if that's what he's referring to or not.

Yeah, I remember the segment...Enos counting off camera 1 - 2 - 3 to get lead QBs thru their progressions. That's a drill, without 300 lbs DL and 250 LB rushing at you too.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I remember A-day 2017 when Jalen hit a number of long throws. Everyone was like "it's clicked", "he's got it", "huge improvements"! We all know how the season played out.

Jalen has been great but, Tua has the potential to be that "once in a generation" type of player. You don't pass over that kind of talent out of loyalty. Tua grabbed the starting job back in January IMO, and I'll be very disappointed if he doesn't start against Louisville. According to a number of reports, he has been better than Jalen in practices as far back as the middle of last season, then the NCG... what else does he have to do?

I'm quite sure that if we were to go back and look, that we'd find Kiffin and Daboll doing similar things with the QBs. Maybe not quite as much dedicated time to it, but Jalen has had coaching on this.

I will say though that after watching the John Doe videos, that Jalen has not historically been very good with the long ball. His accuracy is very, very sketchy at best so if he is showing improvement in connecting on some of the longer passes then good for him and hope he keeps progressing down that path.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Problem for Tua doing those "progression drills" is that it probably feels like basic math when he's majoring in geometric angles already.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I hope an expect Jalen to improve. I just doubt anyone's ability to make up the large gap between Tua and Jalen's passing ability. I also hope and expect Tua to improve. Tua just has a huge head start from what we have seen.

Good to hear about the deep balls. I'm equally worried about his sideline throws. Those Youtube videos were brutal on that. I'd hate to see his completion percentage on left sideline throws. Well, actually I have. I'm just suppressing it...

I could have sworn (but am too lazy to look up) that this was said last offseason about Hurts. It was part of the "Kiffin used Hurts wrong and didn't develop him" line. I think at one point I even commented something like "well clearly if his HS scouting report said the deep ball was a strength and it is again now then we much have been doing something wrong under Kiffin"

Maybe I'm crazy though.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I'm not impressed by a couple of random deep balls. That was his supposed strength coming out of HS.

He might hit 2-3 in a row but that is probably going to be followed by 7-8 that are under or over thrown and or behind and or over the wrong shoulder.

His ball placement is consistently scattershot.

I hope that he is generally improving by at this point I'm fine with seeing it in the late 3rd or 4th quarters of blowout wins.

Tua is the Better QB. He's proven it for at least 9 months now. He deserves to be the Starter.
