Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I like Jalen, but I can't for the life of me understand why some posters feel like there needs to be a competition for this spot during gametime. Jalen has had two years and 28 games to prove himself, and it only took 1/2 a game for Tua to show why he deserves the spot. Why does anyone think Jalen deserves more time to prove himself? He wasn't even the best QB at the A-day game this year.

For some of us, deserve has nothing to do with it. CNS has a track record of handling things like this and I will trust that he knows what the heck he's doing. I think it has to do more with the team and seeing who they play better for on the field so that there is no doubt. Not to mention who can spread the ball around better and simply make decisions under game situations when the opposing defense is trying to take your head off.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

It wouldn't surprise me if CNS calls both Tua and Jalen aside in the pre-game locker room and flips a coin. Heads starts the game. Tails starts the second half. [emoji15]

Last year’s recruiting class (a pathetic top six class) was down because of multiple things, not because of Jalen.

Do you believe the rumors of mutiny with the freshman WR's last year? I think the RB's had to be frustrated with Jalen taking so many rushing attempts that limited their exposure to the NFL.

Ross usually doesn’t give revealing answers when it comes to his recruitment. But, he did answer honestly when asked about his thoughts on Alabama’s offense in its first game against Florida State. The 6-foot-4, 197-pound prospect was in Atlanta for the game where he saw Jalen Hurts complete 10 of 18 pass attempts and only throw for fewer than 100 yards. Calvin Ridley was the only wide receiver to have a reception in that game.

y)While, clearly, Alabama got the result it wanted in the game, for a wide receiver with options, it was not a performance that was exciting.“I feel like they could have opened it up a bit more, but they didn’t really have a chance to reveal their passing game too much,” Ross said. When asked what the Tide have to do to impress him moving forward, his answer centered around making sure other receivers outside of Ridley are involved.“I do feel like they have to spread the ball around more, but it’ll come in due time,” Ross said. “I was expecting a bit more, to be honest. I didn’t get that. I’ll probably get that in the future, though.”That did change in the Fresno State game this past weekend. Eight receivers or tight ends caught passes against the Bulldogs, but none of the pass catchers had more than 45 yards.

And then, you factor in the frustration of the wide receivers on the team last year. Recruits don't live in a bubble. They hear the facts on their visits. They see the proof on the field. I am pretty sure that Waddle only committed to Alabama after Tua's heroics in the title game. The 3 freshmen receivers last year had been recruited for years, from back when we actually did have a downfield passing game.

Nobody here seems to think there needs to be a game time competition. But plenty think that Nick Saban knows what he is doing.

He sees every moment of practice from these guys. He's broken down their film more than John Doe ever will. He has legions of coaches reporting back on their every move...each success, each mistake.

He is the most thorough and detail oriented coach in the game today.

I'm going to let the greatest college football coach of all time make the call on the 2 quarterbacks he's had under a microscope.

Seemed to stray from that last year and I don't think it's just a coincidence that our recruiting was the worst it's been in years. When the top wide receiver in your state wants nothing to do with you, that can't be good.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that Tua was the same player at the beginning of the year that he was at the end. He made dramatic improvement during the bowl preparation. But CNS was justified in continuing to start Jalen for most of the year. But in either case CNS did not stray from his "best player" approach last year. Bama may have lost Ross because of the lack of a passing QB but it was not necessarily because the best QB was not playing earlier in the year. It was not an easy call early.

Surely you're not suggesting that Saban should have started Tua over Jalen vs FSU or CSU are you ? Bama was just caught in an unfortunate circumstance.

Throughout the whole season, Tua was cutting down on his INTs in practice, which were plentiful early on. He was a different player by CFP time...

1. If (Big IF) Jalen can somehow manage to hold off Tua through the first couple games and remain the starter then go ahead and etch Dan Enos on the Broyles Award.
2. Something I’ve never really understood about Hurts. If his (and his father’s) plan was to go to a school that would develop him into an NFL QB, why choose Bama? It’s not like Tuscaloosa has been Home to QBU.

BINGO. Folks talk like Kiffin couldn't develop a QB but I just don't see it that way. Kiffin had Sims making all the throws: Deep, bubble screens, intermediate, you name it. I know Sims had another coach help him with his mechanics also, but it was mostly Kiffin helping him with reading the field, understanding where to go with the ball and being able to pull the trigger. We all remember Kiffin celebrating those TDs before the ball was even thrown with Sims don't we? That's because Sims would make the right read and was able to execute the throw. I don't recall Kiffin getting to do the same thing with Jalen.

Kiffin gets too much credit for Blake Sims' improvement and Blake doesn't get enough. It was Sims that worked with a QB coach between A-Day and fall camp to improve as a passer.

In an interview CNS noted that Tua completed 54 of 58 passes in practice against the #1 defense leading up to the Clemson game...while Jalen was out with the flu. My question is still why he didn't see action in that game??? Yes, this horse was dead a long time ago...

Because CNS is risk adverse and we didn't need Tua to beat Clemson.
