Alabama QBs in 2024, II

I think he will be better. Deboer is a player’s coach and an offensive guru. So he probably will get more help on how to improve than he ever has.

However I wish he would stop running his mouth and giving Georgia bulletin board material.

We really wanna go there?

Those plays were overshadowed by the few plays he did make that turned out to be big. The dime he threw to J Burton in the endzone was impressive, regardless of the other things he didn't do great. That was a great throw. At the end of the day or should we say, at the end of that game, he made more good plays that helped win the game than plays that lost it. I'm no Milroe apologist, but Saban even said games are basically decided on a handful of plays throughout the game and Milroe, the LOS, and the wr's made those handfuls of plays in that game. So that's all that many remember and that's all that many care about.

Even that throw to Burton was a very questionable read. Prentice was WIDE OPEN on the same side from the slot on a slant through a short/intermediate zone that was much lower risk / higher likelihood of completion and would have at least been a first down if not a TD also.

Yep. He was such a great guard for us, especially the year before in the rungame. I have no idea why he kept getting passed over for starting lineman. Hate to speculate. But his center snapping was abominable. We must have had nobody behind him. Still can't believe it.

Huh? Seth never played guard. Took over OC in 21 when DD got hurt, then again in 22 when the staff finally realized DD was a liability. They tried to move DD out to OG some, but after a little while it was obvious Roberts was way better.

I'm mis-remembering. He WAS our better blocker at center. Don't know why he got the yips.

Questionable read but one helluva throw

I feel like we have had a lot of players and maybe even Saban say similar things in the past about other teams. Granted UGA is a bit different.

Yep, but in 10 situations like that, making the riskier throw that takes a good while longer to develop versus the right read will work against you 7-8 times out of 10. Over the course of a game or a season it just puts the odds against you, especially against teams with decent levels of talent.

The OL and the defense won the UGA game. Milroe made the plays when he had to, but he wasn’t the reason we won. The Michigan loss is more or less on him.

UGA's "two spies" approach was one of the most significant decisions in the game. They did that because of Milroe, not the OL

Yeah, I agree, and I get all of that. Just pointing out that the guy made one helluva throw that heavily impacted the outcome of the game.

For someone who supposedly has elite athleticism, Milroe just stands there and takes a lot of sacks.
A NFL fan I watch football with kept yelling, "Why is he not taking off running? The field is open in front of him!"
I told him I thought he was being coached to stand in the pocket and show he can be a pocket passer. "Building value for himself at the next level."
I have no insider information to back that up. Just an guess.
Me personally, I would advise Jalen not to run every down, but when the opportunity presents itself to get the first down without taking a serious hit, then make the quick decision and go for it. I think Jalen Milroe is terrifying to defenses when he gets into the open field. He is so fast and pretty elusive as well. He would keep me up at night if I was a DC on an opposing team.
On the other hand, if my rush is getting to him in anything like a reasonable amount of time and I saw him staying in the pocket, I would breathe a sigh of relief, thinking, "Thank God he is not running."

But I am not a coach.

Great post. I am not a coach either but imo Jalen's problem is decision making. It seems to take a long time to decide whether or not to take off and run.

I will forever thank Auburn for their pure stupidity in rushing only two players on that TD pass to Bond. There was ZERO chance of getting by Bama's huge OL with two rushers. Milroe had an eternity to throw that beautiful TD pass and a qb rarely will get this kind of time.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Milroe is an extremely talented player. With his speed and elusiveness, many of the sacks he took seemed to be unneccessary. If he can overcome his hesitation he can be great. If not, we may have problems.

As always, JMO.

A running QB CAN BE a big threat.

I won't sit here and type JM's legs aren't a threat. But the kind of running threat 100% of coaches want is from the kind of QB who can also stand in the pocket and deliver the ball to even faster wide receivers.

Last time I checked a decent QB can throw the ball and it will go faster than even the fastest QB can run.

JM's goal should be to become like Jalen Hurts OR Lamar Jackson; guys with wheels but guys who have learned to be a passing QB first.

That may be how JM already sees himself, but until he can prove he's a real drop back threat, he's just a fast guy who plays the QB position.
