An Update on Justin Jonus

Alabama commitment Justin Jonus continues to be pursued by National Champion Syracuse. In fact, it looks like that with the likely departure of Carmelo Anthony to the NBA draft, Boeheim may offer a scholarship to Jonus. On the other hand, Jonus' father claims that his son has been promised the next available scholarship at Bama. Since he has not signed a letter of intent with any school, it looks like Jonus is weighing all of his options and waiting for other shoes to drop. I don't know if I could see a kid turning down a scholarship to Syracuse to walk-on at Bama. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe that situation will not even present itself.

Jonus Weighing Options

Yeah, kinda makes you wonder why our coach offered all three of our schollies before we really went after Lang or Jonus. I could be way off but I believe we really need Jonus at that size and shooting ability. If I was a betting man I say we loose him to Syracuse because of bad recruiting. That's just my opinion, but this guy should have a scholly waiting on him. What the f*^%$#?

ROLLER,
It does not make me wonder why CMG offered all three of our schollies to players other than Jonus and Lang. First of all, CMG did go after Lang. However, CMG knows that it is pointless to offer a scholly to a kid who will probably not be academically qualified. CMG recruits athletes who can actually pass their classes.

Secondly, why offer Jonus one of the 3 currently available schollies? He does not play a position of immediate need. In college, he will most likely be a wing player. We already have 3 wing guys in Winston, Thomas, and Lucky Williams. Bama needs big men. CMG got that in Taylor, Adkins, and Davidson. CMG made the right decisions in recruiting this year. Oh yeah, why would you offer a player a scholarship if he's willing to walk-on his first year?

You're right TideRoller. I forgot about our wing situation, but Jones plays two as well. I'm sure Gottfried didn't realize how the guys would shoot last year either. BTW I don't know if we are short at the post or not because.....WE ONLY PLAYED TWO POST GUYS A MAJORITY OF THE SEASON (sorry Reggie). Who's our starting center and is Tom that good with first year guys?

C'mon ROLLER. Do you think CMG wanted to only play two post guys? We had no depth. CMG didn't play two post guys because he wanted to. He played two post guys because no one else would step up. I don't disagree that getting Jonus would be a big plus. I disagree that getting Jonus over the current 3 recruits is a good idea.

I agree, our depth at the low post really hurt us & Walker not stepping it up made it even worst. Jonus would be great, but we would have to play very small, & hope our speed & great shooting would win us games next year.

Has anyone seen Jonus play before? I have, and he is alright. But in reply to the first post - i am glad that we did not offer him a scholarship first, we messed up when we didn't get Jordan Howell. He can shoot as good as Jonus, plus he plays defense and is a great penetrator and passer. I saw Jonus about 4 times this year, and he is indeed good, and deserves to walk-on at Alabama, but I believe that he doesn't deserve a scholly. Trust me on this one, CMG did a great job this year, and it looks so far that he will bring in a couple of MCDonald's AA next. DJ White, Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, Ronnie Steele...that would be an amazing class.

Great shooting?
I thought we were talking about Alabama.

Seriously though, I hope some of these incoming guys are good post players, depth there will be even worse this year if not.

Look guys I'm not referring who's the best between Jonus or Howell, because I don't know. What I know is that Chuck Davis and Brock played early in the year, but after Kennedy was available we lost those guys. Were they hurt and which one of you guys noticed that they weren't playing well? Who noticed them playing (no minutes) worst than Dudley or Walker? If they were in the doghouse I hope our new guys don't join them or we'll have Kennedy at center.

The thing with me is; we had alot of new players that showed promise. Then all of a sudden they fade a bit, their no longer involved in playing time.

BTW I'm just a fan and not a team spokesman, but when I noticed a season being made or broken by freshmen I would go back to 1999. When we see a year sophomores make or break a season it will be next season. Don't think these new 6-10 guys are gonna power over the league. They are going to have to go threw growing pains just like Brock and Davis and oh yeah even Emmitt Thomas.

Now if we would have played well in the SEC last season then my argument would be crazy. If Kenny Walker and Dudley had been consistent a bit more I wouldn't have noticed a disgruntled Davis on the bench.
