JessN: Assistant coach hiring tracker...

That's a tall order but I do think we've upgraded on the offensive side of the ball. DeBoer is widely considered a great offensive coach and Grubbs, the new OC, is the guy Saban wanted before having to settle for Rees.

I'd have preferred to have a guy in place, to ensure a smoother transition. This was reportedly Saban's hope with regard to Sark but there was no way he could turn down the Texas job.

Under the current transfer rules, though, I don't know how it could have gone better in the absence of a Coach In Waiting. DeBoer looks to be a home run hire and he's assembling what looks to be a top-notch staff. I might have preferred a Jim Leonhart or other more-experienced DC but this guy has done it at Indiana and been a head coach, so he looks promising.

The problems are multiple with having a "guy in place." How is that even done? One slip of the tongue and it's chaos.

GB was as much on top of this as possible.

And the coaching waiting thing is a plan for failure, typically.

Tommy Rees being mentioned to replace Wommack.
I'd like to see that.

I feel bad for the way things went down for him in the aftermath of Saban's retirement.

Seems like a decent young man with a bright future.

I'm guessing it was a real gut punch to him...going from a few years learning under the GOAT to the unemployment line in 10 months.

It's really hard unless the HC plans to retire in the next 2-3 years---which creates its own problems. It would have been nice to hand to keys over to Kirby or Sark but CNS wasn't ready to retire then and, as noted upthread, he hasn't had the same caliber of coordinators since.

wish cns had a two year plan to retire in advance .. for such meticulous guy it was sudden

And if he has ANYONE around him with walking around sense they'd advise him to at least listen (which seems like he is) and look at what WR's do in CKD's offenses. Show him Washington's wr's the two years CKD was at UW and say "That's what you'll be playing in".

Use the "selfish player" dynamic to our favor. "You want the ball, you want big numbers? This offense will get you that".
Amen, brother!!

Of course we don`t know everything that went into the timing, but it did seem a bit out of character, at least it`s felt that way to me. All in the rear view now and I hope it`s pedal to the metal now!

You learn a lot about yourself when you go through stuff like this. Ask me how I know!

Concerning the coaching staff I'm borrowing some from a post of @Tiderollin32 to illustrate a point:

CNS had recently hired: Tommy Rees (31) only OC a few years at ND, Joe Cox TE’s (Colorado State), Robert Bala (Liberty), T-Rob (USCE), Eric Wolford (Kentucky). Not exactly premier places but that’s who he hand picked.

Plus, Kevin Steele was on his 3rd trip here at Bama (IIRC).

If anybody other than CNS hires this staff most people's reaction is "meh" and even many of our own fans felt that way.

Plus, add to this the CNS himself said a factor in deciding to retire was the difficulty in hiring assistants and it's not a stretch to say CNS himself probably was 100% pleased with his coaching staff.

Also (as another poster pointed out) we've signed the top 3 classes in the last 4 years, so if the rating services are anywhere close to being correct, our inability to win NCs since 2020 has been more about coaching and less about players.

My daughter is currently at South, and I thought Wommack did a solid job there. I would love to see Rees head down to Mobile and get some head coaching experience.

I can't think of a single such transition that bore decent fruit. "Where are they now?"

Honestly, I think his plan was to run until he couldn't do it to his standard anymore. There's not really any way to plan that.
Just after the season last year the narrative was completely different for Saban. He was looking forward to more years of coaching. This season's turmoil took a toll on Coach. I pictured in my mind him sitting on the front row of the press conference the other day thinking, " I over reacted. I should of thought things out longer." The man is a football coach. I don't see him enjoying much else.

Everyone talks about players being effective when coaches leave or retire and they then want to see what they can get from the next school, what about these coaches and their families, not only this affects Alabama coaches but you have Washington and Arizona and so on, sure some can operate on what they've made but when you maybe are a little pawn it affects wives and their kid's, but all anyone is interested in is player's staying or leaving, I know that's a life of a coach but it still affects families

Fwiw, Im pleased with all of the hires so far. Bama has been a 4-2-5 team a majority of the time the past several years so it will not be a huge adjustment. Saban by his own admission said we were only in a 3 man front (3-4/3-3-5) about 30% of the snaps. The hires so far seem to be great coaches who develop players. That's what we need. Recruting will come as relationships are built.
