Link: ATH/S Malcolm Mitchell committed to UGA

I don't see how the desire to play wide receiver would send him to UGA. He could play WR at 'Bama too, we've sent receivers to the league recently, and it's not like we have Spencer Pennington waiting in the wings at quarterback. And besides, it's not like UGA is exactly loaded in the defensive backfield in their own right.

In the end I just think it'll be a moot point. I think he's heading to Alabama regardless.

Only reason I think UGA has an advantage if MM wants to play receiver is that we have had at least 4 WR commits the past 3 years. Plus, if all 4 WR commits enroll this fall, Ronald Carswell will give us 5 WR in this class. UGA only has 3 WR commits this year and only signed 2 last year. I'm not saying that sways him to UGA, simply that there would be less competition in the depth chart. I think he still rolls with the Tide with the expectation to play DB and get on the field early.

Andrew Bone just retweeted a tweet from Rome that said "it's time for my idols to become my rivals..." and of course Rome grew up a UGA fan.

Hmmm.

I wouldn't read too much into it. It seems he is trying to build up some hype around his announcement. I remember last year Chris Dunkley put something on his FB page about commiting to us right before his announcement then committed to FL. JMO

That quote, "It's about that time where my idols become my rivals" comes from a song, "Thank Me Now" by Drake:
Yeah we want it all, half was never the agreement
Who'd thought the route we chose would ever end up this scenic
I could relate to kids going straight to the league
When they recognize that you got what it takes to succeed
And thats around the time that your idols become your rivals
You make friends with Mike but gotta AI him for your survival
D***, I swear sports and music are so synonomous
'cause we wanna be them and they wanna be us
Yeah so on behalf of the demanded
And the entertainment that you take for granted
You could thank me now...
And oh my goodness you're welcome
You're welcome

I think it is coincidental.

I am expecting that Mitchell will commit to Bama later today. If Rome does not commit to UGA I will be happily surprised because that would mean that he commits to Bama. I am hoping for both but if Mitchell commits to Bama that is more than enough to make my day. ;)

Jay Rome, Malcolm Mitchell make verbal commitments today
The Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide are eagerly awaiting today's announcements. Georgia and Alabama are finalists for both Rome and Mitchell.

Rome is ready to let everyone know where he is going. “I'm really excited,” Rome said on Wednesday. “For about a week now, I've known where I've wanted to go. When I got the call last week asking if I wanted to (announce my commitment) on ESPN, it seemed like the first opportunity.”

Both Rome and Mitchell have kept their plans a secret to almost everyone. Very few people know which school either player will pick. On Wednesday, Rome said the only other person he has told is his father.

Rome says his college team will either be Georgia or Alabama. Rome made his official visit to Alabama last weekend. His official visit to Georgia came in November. Mitchell also visited Alabama last weekend, and visited Georgia in December.

OK, I'm starting to stress just a bit. I knew I shouldn't venture around too much, but I was just curious to see how confident people were about Mitchell. Some Alabama fans are saying there is bad news coming out of Valdosta now. Does anyone really know that? We sure could use a big commitment this week. Here's to still hoping Mitchell is one. :BigA:

Rome saying he knows for a week does not sound good for us because that would be before he came on his visit.

It's coming out because of some things Buck Belue is saying.

My sources back home in Valdosta are telling me that it's a clean sweep today. Georgia is going to get both Super 11 TE Jay Rome and playmaker Malcolm Mitchell. Jay will announce on ESPNU's "Recruiting Insiders" show between 5:30-6:30. That show tapes in Tallahassee mid-afternoon. Malcolm will announce at 7:30 in Valdosta. Jay plans on being back from Tallahassee in time to see Malcolm announce in person. Rome has been a Bulldog lean for a few weeks now. Mitchell has been going back and forth between Georgia & Alabama. The Tide led early, but then Richt sold him on being able to play both ways at Georgia. Kirby Smart responded to that with a dual opportunity at Bama. As I understand it, Mike Bobo has connected with Mrs. Mitchell during the recruiting process and that has given Georgia the edge. Again, Bobo has been one of CFs top recruiters at Georgia and it appears as though Mike has done the job in Valdosta. Just heard Mike and Coach Lilly are at Valdosta High to have lunch with them today. That's a good sign, right? The fact that I'm a Valdosta native has had me paying close attention to these two guys. And I'm old friends with Stan Rome, Jay's Dad. Both these guys will look good in a Georgia uniform. Sure hope it plays out that way later today.
