Bama @ Arkansas Game Thread

This officiating is awful. This team is showing some moxie tonight. Knox has been fighting hard all night.

Unbelievable that Arky only has three fouls in 17 minutes this half!!!:eek2:

The refs have really missed the charge vs block fouls and the moving screens. Good refereeing may have helped, but Bama lost this game in the usual fashion.

This is weird watching the game knowing Bama will have a new coach next year.

Arkansas wins 89-80.

I'll be at the Georgia game Saturday night, hope to see you there!

Agreed! There is no one to blame it on now. The rest of this year has to play out.

I noticed CPP was willing to play everybody. I wish he would of used the press sooner. But I did like the intensity he displayed. The hogs were just hot. Ugly FTs at the end for the Hogs, but they were good.

When is the last time we had 70 shot attempts and was good on 48% of them?

We were 80% on our FT's which was good but only 10 attempts to Arkansas 35 attempts of which 28 were made. Not a shot at the refs but just giving the Hogs their due for making them down the stretch when they aren't a great FT shooting team.

I think that good adjustments were made by CPP, but we just didn't get to the line enough and we didn't shoot well from the outside. The hustle was there tonight though.

We need to have a good showing Saturday and take UGA down big and gain some confidence.

So much of good defense is just effort. That means fighting through screens, scrapping around the basket, hustling back down court so you do not give up easy shots in transition, and stepping out to contest 3 point shots.
I have watched about 10 of our games this year and we do not do any of those things on a consistent basis. Tonight was just another example of these things.
I have watched Samford play about 8 games this year. They are short, slow, have no jumpers to block shots, have little athleticism, yet they hustle, fight and scrap enough on defense to stay in most of their games. And,no, I am not saying that they could compete with us at all because the difference in athleticism is huge, but our team and coaches could learn a lot about how to overcome a lot of shortcomings through more intensity and hustle.
By the way, Samford has a great coach in Tillette, who does about the most he can with the talent level he has and the limitations on who he can recruit to a small, liberal arts Baptist school where the players have to go to class and there are few easy majors.

You're right. And it's the same story that we've heard and seen play out for this and many other seasons past.
This is not a shot at CPP, because I know he's doing the best he can with the talent he has available. In fact, I think he's shown more interest tonight in trying to secure a win than I saw in XCMG for some time. But the truth of the matter, as I see it, is that this team has been failing not only because XCMG failed to do his job, but because the team as a whole been failed by the entire coaching staff, including CPP. IMO every member of the coaching staff opted to accept mediocrity from these players rather than coaching up their individual talents and abilities. Therefore all the coaches, both individually and collectively, failed in their own jobs to develop the players into a competitive team.
For this reason, I think it's best that when the new coach is hired, he should in turn be encouraged to clean house and hire all new assistants as well.
JMHO

35 free throws versus 10 free throws will beat GOOD teams. Now when a struggling team faces that, forget it.

I agree. It's just too late in the game to teach them how to play defense.

I only watched the first half but I think the simplest and most damning thing I can say about us is that we don't play hard enough to be successful. We really don't.

It was a tough road loss to swallow, but better days will be coming. It was nice seeing our guys in hdtv. Samsung has a nice picture.

I made the same point earlier in the thread. It's unrealistic to expect CPP to teach them fundamentals when he couldn't in 11.5 years under CMG. Also, they think they're playing hard. They need pushing, which they haven't had. With a new staff pushing them, and teaching fundamentals, I think they will surprise. It's obvious that CPP is certainly not the answer...
