Bama doesn't deserve to be the best!

Thru the years at the UA we had some great players that played for the Tide, but the none of them ever won the Heisman. There are some many reasons why that didn't happen, but I think the #1 reason is simply the fact that Bama never cared for such individual nonsense or do we?

I'm sure if you talked to a common Bama fan, he or she will always tell you that they rather have 10 more Natonal Championships than our first Heisman winner. Bama proclaims (and others) ourselves to be the best in College Football with our NC, Bowl victories & appearances, football records and stats, guess what? So can Oklahoma, Notre Dame, USC & Michigan, but the difference is that those schools have Heisman winners thru the years and we don't....does that not make us a complete power house in college football?

In my honest opinion, those teams can have all the Heisman winners they want! They can never be like Bama. The games we won & lost are classic and the players that we had and coaches change the face of College Football forever!

But I think this is more important than anything else....If you were to ask other fans like Notre Dame or Oklahoma, they would probably give up one or two Heisman winners in their past to have the name like Alabama Crimson Tide and have chance to say Roll Tide Roll!!! for once in their lives.

Roll Tide till I die!!!!

To be honest I wouldnt mind a heisman and would relish that the best player in football wore crimson. I wont lose sleep over it, but I wont poo poo the heisman either. The heisman not being won can also be a double edged sword. "WE win natonal titles and Heismans here" could be a recruiting tool. It does a lot to help, it provides exposure and attention, and usually now if you have a heisman winner you have a top 10 team also. If I were offered a choice for Bama to win the heisman or TItle I would take the title anyday. But I wont discard the heisman either because we havent won it.

That's a rather bold statement to make, both those teams have plenty of tradition and great deal of sucess over the years and a loyal fan base. I'm a very proud BAMA fan but there are equally proud fans that feel just strong with Boomer Sooner and Fighting Irish. For that reason, when we play either one of those teams people take notice, no matter the records.

As for the Heisman and the fact that we've never had a player carry the award away. I enjoy team success, it is a team sport and I too believe there is much greater satisfaction in the teams sucess than there is for that one individal on the team. I don't really see the 2 connecting, other than both are goals, only that Heisman is individual and I've seen it turn a bit selfish at times. Now with all that said, I'd love to witness a Tide player winning the throphy but in all honesty, his prints would be no different than the hunders of others that encircle Denny Chimes. A player that came and gave to the University, his team and us fans and was forunate enough to walk away with a little hardware.

I disgree a little

We have had plenty of players over the years that could have won the Heisman but one of the things Coach Bryant did was play so many running backs in a game that one guy never put up great numbers. I can remember him playing 6 or 7 backs in a game. Alot of times it didn't matter what the score was either. The same thing happened on defense. That's why when the 4th quarter came around if the game was close, Alabama closed it out more often than not.

With BAMA's emphasis on team goals rather than individual honors, we may never win one and I'm fine with that. Besides, the award seldom goes to the actual best player in the nation. You'd have a devil of a time convincing me there have ever been better football players than Lee Roy Jordan and John Hannah, but they didn't play the proper positions for the Heisman folks. We've had plenty others who were deserving too.

I agree with TM, but

In all reality, Bama should have a Hiesman trophy in Tuscaloosa, one from David Palmer. To have the talent to play big time college football is few and far between, but to be able to do all the things Palmer did and to do them well made him easily the best player in college football when he was nominated. :biga2:

Bama does not produce Heismans. Bama produces stars!

Joe Namath! Ken Stabler! Bart Starr! John Hannah! Dwight Stephenson! Ozzie Newsome! Cornelius Bennett! Bob Baumhower! Lee Roy Jordan! Shaun Alexander! Howard Cross! Derrick Thomas! Greg Gantt(What A PUNTER!)! Barry Krauss! Marty Lyons! John Mangum! Don McNeal! David Palmer! And that's just a few that I can recall in such short order. I can't recall the greats before my time so add to the list if you wish.

:biga2: ROLL TIDE ROLL :biga2:

I have commented on this a ton already. However since you mentioned ND and OK in particular.. ND could have a top 10 recruiting class and the following year be the media darlings. The joke at our house when they lose is they may climb a spot after such heroic effort. So Heismans to ND. I personally didnt think guys like Des Howard were even close to the best player in college football, for example.
OUs Heismans were players that got the ball darn near every play as I mentioned in another post.
Give Bobby Humphrey the carries Sims had and, well truth be known even if he rushed for 2000 yards and 32 tds and there was a Des Howard, well Bobby would have come in second.

We have come very close to getting a couple of guys a Heisman over the years and I really thought that Shaun was a shoe-in until he had his injury. He was the heart and soul of that 99 team.

Paul Hornung won the Heisman at Notre Dame while playing for an Irish team that only won two games! Namath finished 11th in the balloting for 1964. He went on to the Jets where he beat out the Heisman winner for the qb job. That guy was another Golden Domer named John Huarte. Never was much of a pro qb.

Give me national championships every time...

Heisman is all hype...schools with the media's ear will always have their man get more pub...perfect example was the Namath - Huarte thing...Joe was by far the better player, but Bama was not and never will be the national media darling...ND always has been...

Someone else can have the Hesiman every year, just keep on giving me wins baby...wins lead to national championships, NOT Heisman Trophies...

After reading these posts about the Heisman, I was curious how many Heisman winners have been on National Championship teams...I did the research (now granted it was hard to decide who was the National Champ many times because so many organizations have champions)...since 1935 there have been 9 Heisman winners on national championship teams...as I said many times there would be 4 or 5 national championship teams, so this is not an exact science, but it's very close...only 9 winners on NC teams in 69 years...so having a Heisman winner does not come close to automatically winning a NC....

The returning Jets QB at that time was a barner named Richard Wood if I remember correctly. Joe put him on the pines too.

One thing that I love being a Bama Fan is that, our fans are smart and
always back up issues with facts! I've been other team's chat boards to browse their topics, man! Their stuff is wacked. Pure nonsense!
Roll Tide Baby!!

**** This is the best Chat Board in College Football!!!****

Tommy, I did not remember that.

Of course you are just a little older than me. I would have been just shy of 13 at the time. Of course the next year, Notre Dame managed to rip us off of our 3rd consecutive MNC. Our quarterbacking certainly had not slipped much. We used Ken Stabler. Not a bad replacement.
