Bama Game Thread: Bama PostGame Thread - Bama vs. OU...

Kiffin is 4-0 going against Venerables and has made him look totally outclassed in each game. The simple reason is Kiffin is bound and determined to find the one weakness that Venerables has in his game plan and will sacrifice a whole half to do. But when he finds it he won’t stop exposing it.

I think Grubb and by extension DeBoer are way too committed to a certain goal oriented gameplan that they refuse to take advantage of what a defense is giving up. I think some of that could be us not being comfortable with our roster (especially OL and RB) and stood that may be too concerned with winning TOP.

I really don’t understand what we are doing at times offensively or why some players start over others. I’m willing to be patient and allow DeBoer time to get his type of Olinemen in but I can’t lie it’s frustrating to see the potential wasted with the talent at receiver and quarterback
I hope we find a way this off season to get some coaches with SEC experience. One thing I’ve thought about with Grubb, if this is as good as it gets with him, and hopefully not with a more complimentary roster and exposure to SEC defenses, but if it is I think we’re stuck with him unless he decides to leave himself. He and DeBoer have spent a lot of time together and I can’t see DeBoer sending him packing. I think the better option is to get some help at fixing what is broken and improving the play calls and play designs.

I think we need a new OL coach, a new RB coach, and we need to hit the portal hard for more talented, more athletic OL. It also wouldn't hurt to get a speedster at RB who has the ability to take it to the house from anywhere on the field.
I think we have the speedster RB but he can’t block yet.

I actually believe that CKD is the right guy and was the best hire among those attainable at the time.

Now, with that, who thinks we can upgrade now knowing we lose the whole staff, reopening the roster to poaching and transfers for 30 days, and sacrificing a current top 3 recruiting class? Are you really willing to put our program through that again a mere 2 years after enduring it?

I personally think staff wise were are in a pretty good spot. Having watched a fair amount of football this fall alot of teams are struggling with OL play and teams heavily invested in DL talent. This tells me there are more quality DL floating around than there are OL and that available OL talent is spread very thin across college football.

Our OL is the biggest holdover from the Saban era. We are going to have to rebuild it through recruiting and the portal. And we know it's broken. And CKD and Grubb are learning what we need to compete in the SEC.

Knowing the rosters at Auburn, Florida, Arkansas, Penn State, among others are open, I believe we are playing with house money to get better, and quickly.

I also believe we need to get creative about where we shop for players. I think we should be holding tryouts for older prospects who have remaining eligibility. I think we should develop a practice squad out of our 105 man roster where you develop some of these type prospects. Who out there was a UDFA with remaining eligibility?

not really though: Look at all the guys who have really gotten reps:

Brailsford came in with CKD.
VDM was brought in via portal by CKD.
Dewberry was brought in via portal by CKD.
We could have left Proctor where he was, but CKD welcomed him back via portal.
Carroll is a CKD recruit.
Sanders is a CKD recruit.

Formby is a Saban recruit
J Roberts (who I still think is our best IOL, and can't understand why he's not anchoring a spot) is a Saban recruit.

The rest of the 2 deep (Ionata and Lloyd) - all CKD recruits. The only other Saban recruit who has a real role is Alinen who comes in when we move Proctor around.

Net, a majority of the guys we are using on the OL are CKD guys, one way or the other.

The team has lost focus and identity. They played well after the FSU loss, but slowly fell into the same bad habits. Struggling to win games against inferior teams. No killer instinct.

No way They should ever lose to this Oklahoma team.
Similar to how we age, accumulation of all the blows the body takes through the years settling in to plague us later in live, this team's fortunes have settled. We had an amazing run through a very, very tough schedule...record breaking in fact. But a team cannot sustain this level of punishment and not show signs of exhaustion, mentally and physically. Nick himself told us that a team can really only get up for a couple, three games a year. I saw a tired team last night playing an inspired opponent, once again, putting their season on the line to play us hard. I don't know if we can get back to mid season form again. We may have already peaked this year. I am proud of the boys but man, not sure how much they have in tank to finish the year.

Its been the worst OL ive seen at Bama in a long time. Supposedly best recruit was Proctor and imho he's been the worst LT in a long time at Bama.

This is a good point. Even though they played well, giving up a 3rd and 13 moves the chains and when we finally stop them, gives them a good chance to pin us deep or a long field goal attempt.
The defense did deliver two timely 3 and outs that gave the offense a chance to score and go up by 5-8 points. They also were put in some terrible positions due to turnovers. Lastly, they gave the offense the last possession with a chance to go win the game.

We go to sleep on offense in the second half.....that's why games are close
Alabama scoring in the 2nd half this season...we don't put teams away
FSU 10 points
ULM 31 points
Wisconsin 17 points
Georgia 0 points
Vandy 16 points
Missouri 10 points
Tennessee 14 points
South Carolina 15 points
LSU 3 points
Oklahoma 7 points

averaging 8 points in the 2nd half of conference games too btw

We need a speedy, game breaker running back who can block. If Dear can’t block, he doesn’t help !

That’s a fair point I suppose but with the way we are trying to use the Pass as a pseudo running game I do wonder why we don’t at least try to involve him there.

We could try a Pop Pass or a Screen or something.

Put him in motion and try to get him the ball with some space.

But maybe his hands aren’t the best too?

I don’t know but it seems like if he can catch there would be a Kenyan Drake type role for him.

Do you think that it stems from opposing defenses making adjustments at halftime?
Or is it a lack of rushing offense? It could be both i reckon.

Not so fast my friend, Ionata and Sanders were Saban recruits, Carroll was offered and recruited by Saban’s staff, so they laid the groundwork. That late into HS relationships you have to go with the guys already looking at you.

Adjustments are nuanced, slight. You hear about halftime adjustments, but that is over done. Teams don’t throw out game plans in 15 minutes they worked on for a week. They tweak things as the game goes along. It’s mostly attitude and intensity that changes after halftime. Running the ball adds to that. but, They need an Orlando McCain to get on their backside after half.
