Boom. Great post.

One last comment: Who can name one player under Mark's tutelage who improved an iota as much as:

Latrell Sprewell or Keith Askins or Roy Rogers or Derek McKee or Leon Douglas (Trust me, the oldsters will attest; Leon was light years better player by his junior and senior years) or Robert Horry or David Benoit or Melvin Cheatham or Mike Davis or Michael Ansley or Eddie Phillips or Mule King or Terry Coner or Eric Richardson or Gary Waites or Buck Johnson or Jim Farmer or Cliff Windham or Phillip Lockett or Glenn Garrett or T.R. Dunn?

Some of these kids had worlds of talent. Some of them had slivers. All of them got better.

I don't see improvement any more. Nor do I see an even occasional glimpse of the intensity that for 20 years made Alabama, again to paraphrase a pretty good football coach, a team nobody wanted to play..

It's not the 70's or 80's anymore........the top kids go straight to the NBA (now they have to sit out one year first).....and 20% of the NBA is European now. Bobby Lee Hurt, Eddie Phillips, Buck Johnson, et al.....were men that could be effective in the SEC in the 70s and 80s.....they were all 6'7 to 6'9 and were great for the system we played in. ........and if you look at the list, Benoit, Cheatem, Ansley, Mike Davis, Gary Waites, Eddie Phillips, Phillip Lockett, Terry Coner, Eric Richardson and even Whatley, Farmer, etc........none excelled in the NBA.....it's just that at that time, the SEC was Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and occasionally UGA, AU, LSU......it's a bit different now.

I think Kenny Walker and Erwin Dudley did improve from Freshman to Junior years. Dudley had a bad Senior Year, but that was more due to the kid putting tons of pressure on himself (my opinion only). I think Hendrix and Jermareo also improved over the three/four years......

But with the deemphasis of FT Shooting, Basic Passing, etc.....leaves coaches like Gottfried, Stansbury, Lebo, John Brady, Felton, etc.......with great athletes who can run up and down the court, who can make phenomenal passes in transition, but can't throw a ball inbounds from under their goal. They can do a double clutch tomahawk dunk, but can't make a free throw.

I think it's the "nature of the beast" at this point in College Basketball. Kids usually don't get much better in college anymore.... I'm sure there are some schools that can recruit those kids.... but, not many.

Which one is it? It can't be both. Gottfried can't develop the talent. Like was said earlier, "There is no visible improvement from year to year." Former players have said the same thing. Eventually this stuff catches up to you and I for one am SHOCKED that it has taken over a decade to catch up with CMG. The point is that it no longer matters if he has an eye for talent because the talent is no longer considering Alabama. The program has to be made viable again and it is clear that CMG is not the one to do that. The AD and the University gave him his shot and he put up an airball.

of course we've had talent in the past. of course he wasnt gonna go 0-100 in recruiting. some of those guys worked out ok some didnt. some would have come to bama regardless who was coach. i remember a guy during the state championships from local school who wanted to go to bama. Gottfried payed him no attention. While leading his team to the title while breaking records along the way he winked over at Gottfried several times during this game. That was one of many that got away and was part of bad evaluation. The bottom line is that Gottfried wasnt getting it done in any fashion. The only disagreement seems to be the current talent level at Bama.

All of this stuff is moot now. Time to lock her down and move forward.

Let's get someone who can evaluate talent and turn it into a great basketball program. We can all agree on that.

ROLL TIDE!!!
