Bama's QB Situation

Here's a little bit of information I picked up a few weeks ago from a fairly close source to the football program about our QB situation. From what I understand and this goes back to last year, Coach Don Shula, with his obvious close ties to both the Miami area and our coaching staff, was pretty instrumental in getting Marc Guillon to transfer to Alabama. After sitting out last year, Marc got a great opportunity to showcase his talents in the Spring as there was only one other healty QB on the depth chart, Michael Machen. Now here's where the plot thickens. As everyone is aware of our scholarship limitations, it was clear that we could not keep all 4 on the team at QB. It was boiling down to which guy had the most experience with the system. Brodie was a no brainer, Spencer basically was to, and Marc was brought in with the backing of a former coaching legend, so that left Mr. Machen as the odd man out. So, the coaching staff asked him to switch to deep snapper if he wanted to stay on the team. Of course, Mike's goal was to play QB and not deep snapper so he transfered to Coffeyville, KS CC and is doing pretty good up there with looks from a few major Div. 1A teams. Did we make a mistake letting him go? Was the coaching staff a little biased? Kind makes you wonder.

Scepticism warning...

that seems to be necessary these days. :) These guys, the coaching staff, are in the business of protecting their jobs. No matter how one may quarrel with their choices, their livelihood is on the line. They may be influenced by input from one or another source, but it can be assumed that their Darwinian choices are dictated by the survival of their (species) jobs... They ain't gonna recruit somebody who they think will jeopardize their jobs..

who knows? it's all irrelevant now. Guillon has much better days ahead of him. We made a choice and Machen made his. I'm glad he is doing good though.

heres some info I found out on Saturday in Knoxville.
I was talking with a walk on Bama player from the Pensecola area, he says that Marc does NOT have a hurt back, he has had a bad attitude, and that Spencer is the one with the bad back. :BigA:

I don't know about any of this, guys, but I gotta ask, What good does it do to speculate about this kind of thing? As somebody else said, each side made their decision, we move on. About Guillon's back, I just don't see why that would be a put on. I just can't see that.

As they say, hindsight is 20-20. But there's another saying that fits in this situation. You can't compare apples and oranges. Playing for Coffeeville CC in the KJCCC ain't nuthin' like playing for Bama in the SEC.

This story is BS

Anyone really in the know.....Machen was an unscholarship player with MLB paying his way. He did not cost UA anything except time and the equipment he wore. Also, The Drunk HC, I mean Price thought he had potential for a 25 year old rs fr.I suppose if the staff would have really thought this through they would have kept him for a least back up in case of injuries. However, I suppose they were really sold on MG and felt he was not needed. I believe the report I heard is that MM left the HC office in tears after being told there was no future at UA at QB.Yes, he then transfered to JUCO and as you've heard before that's the rest of the story.

If and when, Michael Machen ever gets back to the big show of Div. 1A ball and makes it into a game, then we can start comparisons. But you are right, hindsight is 20-20 and what's done is done.

Spencer has the bad back, and Guillon just has a bad attitude? What kind of puckey is that?

For the first time in about three weeks, Guillon took off the orange 'no contact' jersey yesterday and took reps.

Guillon was heavily recruited by a number of teams across the country, including Alabama. He was offered a scholarship but chose Miami instead.

Contrary to what's been said in other forums (and on the air), Miami was certainly not glad to see him go. Brock Berlin has struggled a bit, and backup Kyle Wright has impressed no one. If Guillon had stayed, he would likely have battled Wright and an incoming freshman for the starting role in 2005.

I really could care less about the Machen debate. I'm more concerned about what happens if, God forbid, Pennington gets injured. Will Guillon be ready to go despite his bad back? Or will Adam Thrash have to take snaps?

Anyone?

I wish I had a "SUPER DUPER SECRET SOURCE" to talk to about Alabama football. It would go well with my decoder ring. Maybe we could exchange information over message boards like this.

Here's a sample of my code:

The dog is in the well.
Bob has a headache.
The moon is upside down.

What do you think?
