Battered Quarterback Syndrome: A Discussion on Ty Simpson

From the OL coach's bio. We are currently ranked #82 with 25 sacks allowed.

  • He inherited a group that allowed 49 total sacks, or 3.50 per game, in 2023 and cut that number down by more than half with the '24 unit allowing only 24 sacks for an average of 1.85 per game

I would like to see QB2 get some meaningful playing time, regardless of how TS is doing. Coach Bryant used to put in his entire 2nd team offense when the starters were struggling. Sometimes it gave us a spark and a little momentum. But, even when it didn't, it gave the 1s a chance to sit down as a unit and discuss things and get a little coaching.
I’ve heard this a lot from lots of people who enjoyed the Bryant years including my own family. But it’s also not 1974 anymore with a bajillion scholarships and running the wishbone. Heck, it’s not even 2012. The second string guys are not 3 levels above the competition anymore.

My problem with rotating out QBs is, among other things, practice time. This offense requires the QB to make a lot of decisions. Nothing tells us that Mack or Russell are on Ty’s level there and ready to take that load, other than hopium.

All true. But hopium is a very strong drug.

When you're having a lower back injury, it affects the way you throw the ball.
When your back spasms, every muscle surrounding the affected area tightens to compensate for it, particularly those in and around the abdomen. Throwing a football is as much about your core, rotating your upper body and following through as is about arm position and strength.

Ty trying to do everything with his arm and shoulders, because it hurts like hell to do otherwise. You can tell. This affects his accuracy and placement. And the less than stellar play of his oline only exacerbates this issue.

I mentioned in another thread I had been fighting a bad back for almost a year before I had surgery in late October. When I moved the wrong way, everything from abdominal to my lower back went into spasm and “locked up”. I can’t imagine, even a 22 year old young man in best shape of his life, fighting through that issue to play football at high level.

I'm with you. I have back issues. I have similar issue and I can't shoot basketball. I can't even throw a ball.. and when I do, I go down immediately.

i had lower back surgery in 2001. at the time, i was an avid mountain biker and whitewater kayaker and was severely limited in the last year or so prior to surgery. i was miserable

Ty either has a concussion....
No way! The coaches, the team, the school and the entire SEC would be sued into poverty for playing a QB with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Any concussion is a TBI . As a high school coach I had to be "Concussion Certified" each and every of the 17 years I coached.

Muhammed Ali and Lyle Alzado triggered the illumination of the problem for all sports.

If he has a hurt back, running is likely a problem too...

Why don't we have Ty rollout to help with the pass rush. Watching the IU and OSU game last night I noticed that OSU sacked Mendoza a few times and then the IU coaches started having him rollout to pass. It seemed to work pretty well. We gotta try something.

I'm calling it like I see it. Ty has not played up to par since the Tennessee game. There has been plenty of examples of the OL giving Ty time and he misses the throw, or makes the wrong throw, or holds on to the ball way too long. Even when he does throw it to the right guy, he's been a couple of seconds late getting it to them. Even that 4th down touchdown throw in the Iron Bowl should have been thrown earlier and he made it more difficult than it needed to be.
The long pass is also a major issue and I can't even remember the last time we completed one of those.

Maybe we're seeing now what Saban used to see in practice? Maybe it's why Ty never could beat out Milroe.

Absolutely. Coach Grubb also mentioned Ty was indecisive in the opener and he's at his best when he makes confident throws and does not "overthink". He has seemed to fall back on bad habits.

At this point, DeBoer and Wommack need to blitz every down of every scrimmage at practice and make Grubb figure out how to stop it.
