Battered Quarterback Syndrome: A Discussion on Ty Simpson

Scott Cochran left Alabama 6 years ago. He and DeBoer literally have no connection whatsoever.
And what people are failing to understand is that Scott Cochran hasn't been at Georgia for a few years now. Coach Saban and Kirby are the reasons for the tough hard nosed teams. Cochran wasn't the reason we won national championships, but he did help when he was here.

Agreed. Kirby's UGA teams are almost a mirror image of Saban's Bama teams...minus a bit of personal accountability.

If you want to look at the beginning of our o-line issues I think you could start with losing Kyle Flood.

It has basically been a steady downward trajectory since then.

Alabama's offensive flaws are too many for all to be fixable. The most troubling one is pass protection. As Mitchell wrote, Simpson can no longer trust his guys to protect him. When a QB cannot trust his OL to protect he has more things to be aware of instead of just focusing on getting the ball out to a team mate. We need a really good OL with thr talent we have.

I have not been sold on KD and most ofnthe staff along with the Strength and Conditioning Staff. When Scott was here we dominated. But out OL is not doing its job I believe its part of the Strength and Conditioning along with our OL Coach and Grubb. Just my thoughts
Keep in mind that the strength and conditioning coach is a holdover from the Saban era. Bailou and DeBoer were at Indiana together, so I guess he's a DeBoer guy too, but Saban is the reason he's here. I'm still back and forth on Bailou. I thought the strength and conditioning was great when we had the duo, but after Dr.Matr Rhea left, I thought we began to have an increase in injuries, so I'm not really sure what to think of Bailou.

I was watching "Read and React" this morning with analysts Cole Cubelic and Roman Harper as they were highlighting plays that Georgia DL succeeded at over our OL. They said the problem with most of these plays is NOT that we didn't recognize what Georgia was doing. We even reacted in ways we should have very often, but couldn't react fast enough or well enough to what we saw was coming.

So, I don't think it's about S&C, but injuries (especially with our center) and liabilities of youth with #64 and inabilities with quickness from some of the other OL.

They also pointed out that our misses weren't limited to just one position, but that many of the plays had just ONE person who missed their assignment and that's what blew the play up.

The fact that this OL can't run block OR pass block consistently is evidence to me that it's the Johnnies and Joes and not so much the Xs and Os.

Both apply to coaching, but in terms of those positions, our strategies don't match the abilities of some of these players so the only way to fix that is through recruiting/portal and player improvement, which takes time.

CKD is largely playing with CNS recruits. Keep that in mind. In the next year or two, we'll start seeing the guys he's recruited and it'll become more obvious, but for now, we've got to let him do what he was hired to do.

And remember, our OL has been a mess for several years under CNS! This is not a new OR problem exclusive to CKD's tenure!
I understand our OL has been a problem for years and some of it was because Coaches dont want to work long hours but they want thr mega bucks. Saban was driven most coaches now are not. Just buy players. Yes I agree to a point that quickness feom our OL is a problem and I have said that before we need lean strong and quick on their feet OL. But we get over powered a lot on Our OL thats why I like Scott. Georgia has a SC guy I believe and correct me if im wrong who worked with Scott. Kirby has the same mentality as Coach Saban. I dont see qhere Coach KD makes a lot of changes during the game. That's a big reason im not in his corner. He just looks lost and I dont think he is capable of taking is to a NC. I might be wrong but it is aggravating when I you support the team financially and you purchase season tickets and can't see the ones you can ot attend and yes I even lowered the price. We will see what happens but I woukd have loved Indianas Coach to have been hired here Inatead of KD. Just my opinion have a good one

If it doesnt include a "you know" every sentence, CKD probably didn't say it...

Two or three times a week, I see a FB post about stuff a coach, player or media person is saying and they all read like this one did; dramatic, sensational, emotional, etc.

I'm not saying my spidy senses are great, but stuff like this pings on level 10 to me.

First, it doesn't even sound like the way CKD talks in public/interviews. Second, it doesn't sound like a team-building comment either.

So if Kirby said he learned something from OU, then we better spend the next two weeks changing up our offensive tendencies and play calling.

It seems teams are baiting Ty into switching and then they switch, knowing what's coming.

We also are going to have to go more heavy on pass pro and start keeping a TE and RB in to block more...maybe even 2 TEs!

And, I think we didn't stick with the running game long enough against Georgia. The first couple of series D. Hill was making decent yardage. He had a few 4-5 yard runs early, but then when we got to 3rd and short, we couldn't convert. And then when we got behind, we panicked and basically abandoned any run attempts. When we gave up on the run, so early, Georgia was just pinning their ears back and sending everyone.

We have to run it better (which brings up OL blocking) and pass protect better and/or scheme better with more screen passes.

And whatever is ailing Ty, we've got to keep him from taking so many hits.

I think it's safe to say that if he's not significantly better against OU this time around than he was against AU and Georgia, we will have an early exit from the CFP.
Someone please forward this post of BamaMoon's to Coach DeBoer ... and quickly!

We have no running game and Ty does not have an accurate deep ball. Injured or no he simply doesn’t have one. Hes 2 of 18 on passes of 30 yards plus this year. (According to Google and if correct that’s more than Milroe attempted last year) If you can’t run and you can’t throw deep….I mean there’s only so many ways to skin a cat. If we had a functional o line I don’t think we’d be worried at all but we are dead on arrival without both. We have zero explosiveness and aren’t consistent enough on the short to mid bc if the opponent knows that’s all you can do guess what? Thats what they’re gonna key on. The hardest way to score is nickel and diming down the field. I’m assuming this is why we had so many trick plays this year. Trying to manufacture explosives. I’m starting to feel like last year and this year are on our coach. Both QBs have some great attributes and some glaring holes in their game. Both years we look good early in the year for the most part and then when there’s tape on us and teams force us to do what we stink at we have no answer and the offense slowly deflates to nothingness. Not to mention there’s talk of us tipping plays both years. Our d coaches are slow to react and adapt but they do do it our offensive coaches can not or will do it at all. I think Ty should come back and if he’s the best option he’ll start but if there aren’t some real changes thru coaching and recruiting/portal then I don’t think it’ll ever get better and kd will be out the door by the end of year 4. Putting the entire offense on a kid known to get down on himself and go on perma tilt…..just seems very unsustainable. I get he needs time to get his style of players but you still know what you have and you are in charge of how you call a game so asking people to do what they can’t is a coaching problem. I would love a new o line coach and a new rb coach.

For everyone talking like this is somehow sabans fault let me remind you Sabans teams almost always finished a better product than they started bc that’s what good coaches do. So far under KD we’ve gotten steadily worse starting at the halfway point. 2 years isn’t a large enough sample to say definitively either way but it dang sure ain’t a good start.

So our OL is bad because:

CKD isn't willing to work long hours like CNS?

CKD isn't like Smart?

If so, how do you explain how many other teams in college football, who have coaches who work normal (un-Saban-like) hours and who are not coached by Smart, who have dependable offensive lines???

Though mock drafts aren't worth the paper they're written on this time of year, Ty is showing up at the bottom of the first round of several that I've seen. A massive drop from the first half of the season. If we get booted against OU and he has a bad game, my guess is, he'll be a second day pick if he comes out. I listened to one of the analyst on "Everything Football" the other night say he "definitely" needs another year of college.

Yep. If TS is hurt or hesitant or lacking confidence, why not give the backup a chance? I'm not saying bench TS for the rest of the game. Just have a few series planned for QB2. Scripted plays if you want. Just do something to change things up and give TS a break to regroup.
Saban showed us a few times that there are times when the backup QB is exactly what we need.

I'm reading the same evaluations of Ty. Not sure how that's going to work with our QB stable. One or more, maybe even Ty, are going to transfer.

The Rams would make me sad. I LOVED them in the 90s with the Greatest Show on Turf when I lived in STL. Amazing games to watch. The Frontiere passed and slimeball took over. He moved the team to LA, which I have only a slight problem with. People are going to were the money is. But he pooped all over STL to justify his money grab. He said horrible things about the city (who has since successfully sued him). He pulled some shady backroom deals with the other owners.

Basically, I hope they lose every single game they play because of Stan Kronke. They are a close second behind Tennessee for my level of hate.

In case y'all are wondering, I was born in Oxford, MS. Both my folks went to Ole Miss. I ended up in STL because I went to college there at Washington University and worked for Mallinckrodt (pharmaceutical company). From there I ended up in Texas where I learned to hate the t-sips. Ended up back (finally) in Alabama in 2006. However, job requirements moved me back to Texas in 2009.

I miss Huntsville, AL for the most part. Except those grey, grey, grey winters.

I hope Austin Mack is taking some first team reps because I don't Ty can take too many hits before being done for the game. You can tell he's hurting with something. Who knows but you can see it in his face and when asked the question you can tell he's not telling the entire story. His face says it all.

He absolutely does need another year, the big question is if it will be here or not. I think it probably will be but it may depend on how good/ready Mack and Russell are

The only way TS would not be on the team next year would be if he lost the starting job in the spring. I doubt that would happen. More likely one of the backups would transfer.

Let's wait until the season is over, because I don't think it's set in stone yet. There is a world where Ty plays his way back into the first round conversation. I know he's pretty banged up right now, but if we can squeak by Oklahoma and he has until the new year to continue to recover, I wouldn't rule out him finding himself again and leading us on a deep playoff run. If he does that, then I think first round is back on the board.
