Most places you here about are tourist places, but generally the better food is found somewhere else. I travel through the state a lot and was wondering if you could help me out (Doesn't have to be in Alabama). Because, after all, I can eat BBQ every day.

Mobile:
Overrated: Dreamland
Underrated: The Brick Pit (Old Shell Road, between University of South Alabama and Spring Hill College).

Some of the most overrated BBQ I have had came out of the state of Texas. The most underrated has been in Mississippi.

If you're ever travelling on AL Hwy 25 through Wilsonville and are looking for some good que, keep going. There is a little place on the side street across from the BP station, and it's called DJ's BBQ. I don't recommend this place to anyone. They don't even cook their que there. They cook it 'at home', bring it in and serve it from crock pots. It's greasy, stringy, and the very WORST I've ever tasted. :p_eek: :p_frown:

Rating: Would have to improve greatly to be terrible.

Never had great BBQ here in Texas, but haven't gone to all the best places I suppose. I has some pretty good stuff at a shack in Austin Texas, but Dreamland and the Brick Pit in Mobile are the best I've had.

I really want to get to one of those Bamaque contests sometime, though.

If you are ever in North Atlanta, more specifically Sandy Springs, go to Slopes.

Great Q, ribs tender, pork sandwiches/plates outstanding, best sauce ever....and try their fried okra......to die for!!!!!!!

I have been to a lot of places where they do one thing well but the rest of the menu almost sucked. I think many places try to do too many things on their menu. I found a BBQ joint in SW Louisiana that had great brisket but for side orders you better like potato salad and green beans or just get the brisket sandwich. No fries, no beer, no ice tea, just sodas and lemon aid.

I have noticed menu's with everything from fettuccine alfredo to ten different salad choices. That just doesn't fit the mold of a great BBQ place. Give me ribs, chicken, pork shoulder, beef brisket both chopped and sliced. Add some sides, fries, potato salad, baked beans, slaw, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, corn on the cob and a piece of bread or a roll. I don't go to a BBQ or Rib joint to eat pasta, fried catfish or order filet mignon.

How true, there is a 1 room bbq place here (Hickory Hut BBQ), that has decent ribs, smoked catfish and outstanding pork sandwiches. But their smoked chicken should be taken off the menu.

Personally, I have never had anything good at Dreamland in T-town. And, I consider myself a pretty dadgum good conoseur of ribs.

Worst BBQ ever: Riscky's BBQ, Ft. Worth Stockyards. It was "risky" alright.

Good old Dr. Hicks for Geology 101 (Rocks for Jocks) used to use bbq joints as landmarks when describing places across the state.

Some good ones:
The Shack (halfway between Pell City and Talladega)
The Green Top (Walker/Jefferson Cty line on 78) I haven't been in several years but back in the day it was good.

I must admit that I've never actually eaten at Dreamland in Tuscaloosa. The two times I went as a student the line was coming out the door so I gave up.

My dad does a mean boston butt. BBQ is one I tend to have at home way more than eating out.

Many, many years ago, we used to have a place here in Mobile called Ozzie's BBQ. It was great -- and for years they used to have their receipe for BBQ sauce on the web. Haven't seen it in forever. T-Mac -- bet you remember Ozzie's don't you?

Overrated: Everything in Mobile:mad:
Mike & Ed's in T-town

Underrated: Mike & Ed's in Phenix City

Best: Chicken Comers (formally in Phenix City) Columbus, Ga:wink:
The best chopped pork, hot %&# mustard sauce, and best sweet tea ever. You know its good when your drive on your off day 4 hours from Mobile just to eat a 1 pound plate and head on back home.

I just partook of some of the best baby back ribs I've had in a while from a restaurant at Full Moon in T-town. Meat literally fell off the bone.....good eats.

I haven't been able to find a good barbeque joint in the panhandle. I've found one place that is passable, that's about it. I've toyed with the idea of opening one myself. I know I can beat what's being served to the folks around here.

Ken's Barbeque in Pinson on hwy 79 is great, or used to be. I haven't been there in years. They slow smoke the butts over hickory. They have a great breakfast as well (smoked sausage).

I've been disappointed with Dreamland in t-town the last couple of times I've eaten there. The sauce is still good but the ribs themselves are small and dry.

Ken's is always covered up when I pass through there. I had some not too long ago, and it was good.

Ditto on the Dreamland. If I have to rip at a rib like a lion eating a gazelle, it ain't worth it.

oh riscky's is absolutely a tourist trap.

my impression of a tourist in the stockyards. "oh look....a real live longhorn cruising the streets....oh look a real live rodeo.....oh look real live cowboys.....oh look a bbq restaurant....it's GOTTA be good and it's GOTTA be authentic."

then riscky's says "SUCKAAAA!!"

there are some very good restuarants in the stockyards though. i've actually had one of the best steaks of my life in the stockyards......lonesome dove restaurant w/ chef tim love.

I'm still partial to Archibalds and to Woodrows as well. I liked the original Woodrows the best before they had to tear it down to widen Hwy 43.

Dude, the Cyclone and the Salt Lick are two of the best Texas BBQ joints around.
As for Alabama I love Full Moon BBQ off Hwy 31 in Hoover.
