Re: Blake Barnett Transferring
If he going to get any real playing time in at a JUCO he better get on move to Scooba, Ms and East Mississippi Community College. He could even be on Last Chance U. They only have 5 games left in the season and one of them is tonite.
This is part of the whole idea that somehow he's making a smart football choice, when clearly all the evidence says otherwise.
So, to take his side in this and argue on his behalf, the idea is he can transfer to a JUCO mid-season, and by doing so only miss a few games the following year right? That's the "advantage" to transferring now vs. waiting until the end of the season, or even better until he graduates.
Alright, so let's look at the JUCO thing. First off, what JUCO team is really going to bend over backwards to accommodate him? None I'd bet, there's not much of the season left, I think some would take him, but would they put a lot of effort into getting him playing time and improving him as a player? I think not.
So, the JUCO route is not going to better him as a player, it's just may be a trick to try to quit now and not sit out a full season. On the other hand, we
know Alabama was willing to continue to work to develop him and get him playing time, and no JUCO is going to have someone like Kiffin around to develop him. So, clearly, if you compare JUCO to Alabama this year, he has so much more to gain by staying at Alabama.
Then you get the other longshot idea, which is that by transferring to JUCO he only misses a few games from his sophomore year. Well, alright but what team is going to hold off on their QB competition that long? What school is going to be in such a big mess that they might let a guy start who is missing four games? I might add, by the way that he's leaving Alabama due to not enough PT, and now that we've thought about it his chances of meaningful PT elsewhere this year and next are not looking so great right?
Yet, all along he had the option of staying through his sophomore year, graduating (he was an EE) and then going anywhere he wanted, without quitting on his team, without missing out on development. This move is premature, it seems by all appearances to be ill advised and one would hope he thinks better of it. Some people have mentioned Phillip Sims and yes Sims is an example of jumping ship and ending up in a poor position, but in some ways this reminds me more of Mitch Mustain. This was a guy with huge talent, who made a poor choice when transferring, he ends up being a backup punter. Don't think talent is all it takes and if Barnett isn't lucky he could end up in a bad position. All Barnett ever had to do was hang in there until he graduated...
