I normally don't initiate discussions regarding Xs and Os because frankly I don't know them. Ha.

But I got to thinking about the game and wanted to get your opinion on something. I’m convinced that MSU will have to successfully pass in order to set up the run, and not vice versa, as they would prefer.

If they are able to do so, and Cook becomes a real threat, do we have any blitz packages which we have seen little of this year that we would utilize? Is it not true that we have pretty much relied solely on our defensive front and that has been enough thus far?

I feel pretty good about our chances to turn up the pressure on Cook and the Spartans if we must.

What I’m thinking is they can’t run FIRST, just as no one else has been able to do. But if we assume a worst-case scenario in which Cook starts slinging it more so than the best we’ve seen thus far this season (Prescott?) we can counter with bringing even more heat to the backfield.

You rarely blitz, but when you do it could be anyone. IMO, you defense is better in coverage when you play your base defense and do not blitz.

I could see Reggie lining up with his hand in the ground and coming on a blitz, but that really wouldn't answer your question.

I would look for Minkah to come on a blitz from his nickel position if Sparty is able to pass. That's been a Saban favorite. We saw Javy do it very well. I recall Dee Milliner doing it some, and Minkah has done it a little bit this year.

I think we will see a lot of #58. That gives a strong rush without a blitz. I think we see an emphasis early on hitting Cook early and hard to test the suspect shoulder. Of course, what we'll face if he does have to leave is "If only Cook hadn't got hurt." ;)

You`re probably right Earle, but I can take that kind of whining all day if the results are the same as with Texas(not meaning I want the kid to really get hurt).

i dont see us needing to blitz against this team, just like we did not need to in the season. This dline is incredible, maybe one of the best ever in college football history. the fact that they were best in all of college football this year against both the run and as pass rushers is incredible.

Just to Nit pick:eek2: If Ragland's hand is on the ground, he wouldn't be 'blitzing!"

I think they will try and dink and dunk us w/short passes over the middle and to the running backs. Maybe a shot or two down field if they successfully draw up the safeties. Maybe play Tim a little more in the earlier downs but don't blitz until we get a lead if at all. Control the run, don't miss the first tackle, limit their first downs.

I seem to recall a few blitzes usually early in the second half of some games but I don't remember the specifics. I think its after the opponent had a little success and rhythm and maybe made some blocking adjustments. Looking at the sacks (a bunch) for this year there are only a handful from linebackers and defensive backs if that means anything.

Agree, I think they will try to dink and dunk us to death. Where you at Minkah?

They intend to test you deep many times in this game. At least, that is what I keep getting out of their interviews.

I'm sensing that, also. I just don't know how much success they can have doing that though. I'm sure they're going to hit at least a couple of them, but at some point the D-line is going to start getting to Cook before the play has time to open up.

If that is their plan, they have to have good protection since most deep passing plays take time to develop. The pocket is going to be in Cook's lap most of the game.

I agree, but they probably know that the 15 play drive isn't going to happen. To put points on the board, they need to air it out and they feel that your defense can be exploited here. Hit half a dozen of these in the game and things could get interesting.

I think that it is a mistake that could cost them a QB. Cook is not mobile enough to avoid the big hits.

I don't see us blitzing against MSU much either. Maybe a corner blitz (that one has bit us a couple of times though) or letting a single linebacker loose on specific down/distance scenarios.

If we win, I can see pulling out some of the exotic blitzes we have seen in the recent past for the next opponent especially if it is Oklahoma. Mayfield likes to freelance as it is. I can see us trying to force that reaction and baiting him. Cook not so much.

Don't expect anything exotic or elaborate as blitz packages in this game. The front seven will get their coverage TFL's and Sacks as usual. I could see some disguised blitz's in 2nd/3rd and long situations but nothing out of the norm. If Cook can't stretch the field early it's gonna be a long day for the Sparty "D" and very frustrating for the "O".
