Question: Border crisis looming, what should be done?

I am sure we probably aren't doing everything we can to deal with the influx. At minimum we could at least mobilize a mass humanitarian aid project like we did for the Palestinians, we didn't need Congressional Action to do that. Deploy the Red Cross to the local air bases along the border. Show these people getting treat humanely while Texas wants to do nothing short of shooting them or letting them drown.

But the Dems inaction is outshines the callousness of the Republicans yet again.

I think the Democrats are stuck between withering criticism/obstruction by the center to the far right and then not enough help from the left leaving them no political room to do much.

But remember, CONGRESS is charged with creating laws on immigration, which they have done very little on since Reagan due to atrocious politics of othering the Southern immigrants. The far right only wants to kick out every non-citizen and even some USA citizens they don't like, so until the far right are put back in their Pandora's box, they will spoil every attempt at creating a functional immigration system based in reality.

It will take a complete crisis inside of the country to improve our immigration system, and there's nothing the right or left, DNC or RNC can or will do to change much at the border except:

We could stem the crises by a new Marshall Plan to make the countries more desirable for the immigrants to stay in. But I'm a dreamer, and I doubt that will ever happen.

The Biden administration, in a new filing to the Supreme Court, has admitted that three migrants who drowned last week died long before Border Patrol agents sought access to the Shelby Park area from Texas officials -- after the administration had blasted the Lone Star state over the incident.

Put that story on the spin cycle! Gotta push that narrative truth be danged.

I don't understand. Why should humanitarian efforts be solely the burden of the Democrats? The White House can't deploy the Red Cross...

It doesn't change the fact that the state of Texas is barring access to federal Border Patrol agents today. If that happened before, it does not modify the fact that it well may, probably will, occur while the Texans are squatting illegally...

That may be very true, but it doesn’t change the lie from the White House.

I need a scorecard. Is one side breaking immigration law while one side upholds it? Or is err’body breaking the law now?

I am just saying the WH used its executive powers to get aid into Gaza. They need to try to do something to show the situation is attempted to be handled humanely. They think if they are not seen down there they are not tied to it. But they are nonetheless, their perceived inaction is tying them to the issue.

If it aint the Red Cross, then the equivalent should be deployed. If Im running for re-election, trying to save democracy...

If someone wants to starve someone, then I want to be there giving them food. If someone wants to let people freeze, I want to be giving them a coat. If someone wants to put kids in cages, I want to show reuniting them with their parents.

We are in an optic war with the Republicans and hate is stealing the day. You can beat hate with hate.

I get it the WH is trying to follow the law of a broken system. They dont want to be accused of not following the law. But I believe more can be done on the optics...

The drownings Friday “underscore that Texas is firm in its continued efforts to exercise complete control of the border and land … and to block Border Patrol’s access to the border even in emergency circumstances,” the Biden administration wrote late Monday in a filing to the Supreme Court in that case.

“It is impossible to say what might have happened if Border Patrol had had its former access to the area – including through its surveillance trucks that assisted in monitoring the area,” Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar wrote in the filing.

“At the very least, however, Border Patrol would have had the opportunity to take any available steps to fulfill its responsibilities and assist its counterparts in the Mexican government with undertaking the rescue mission,” she continued. “Texas made that impossible.”

____

So, prevent agents from doing their jobs - including surveillance - and then claim by the time they arrived the drownings had already occurred and therefore Texas had nothing to do with it and border agents could not have done anything.

Yeah, right.

Who wants to buy some ocean front property in Arizona?

Maybe a bridge in Brooklyn?

Because it takes some gullibility to believe that line of bull.

The problem is that breaking the law for a good cause is a slippery slope. Who are they going to send? If they send troops, a la Trump, there will be a civil war, which is what Abbot wants. I wondered why the WH didn't just federalize the Guard, like Kennedy did with Alabama. It turns out that, under an obscure section of US Code Title 32, a state can maintain its own defense force, separate from the NG, which Texas has done...

(c)
In addition to its National Guard, if any, a State, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, Guam, or the Virgin Islands , may as provided by its laws, organize and maintain defense forces. A defense force established under this section may be used within the jurisdiction concerned, as its chief executive (or commanding general in the case of the District of Columbia) considers necessary, but it may not be called, ordered, or drafted into the armed forces.

I dont know. But Johnson has asked for Biden to act through executive order. I know its a trap invitation. But like Hunter Biden showing up to the hearing unexpectedly, I would strongly consider calling their bluff and deploy a team to deliver food, coats, and triage medicine through executive action. Our last President went to Puerto Rico and tossed paper towels to people who had lost everything.

IDK who. FEMA, maybe?

Posted on another forum I frequent in a thread about New York. Not a political discussion but (mostly) good, bad, ugly type of thing......

NY born and raised, lived or worked in the city for years… you’d have to be crazy, absolutely CRAZY to move to NY now. The migrant situation is absurd; almost 200k in last 2 years. Thousands of people just standing around in parks and building entrances, no where to defecate but outside. The smell is beyond belief. Pot smoke smell lingering constantly. Subways would be Russian roulette for a woman or an elderly person. Congestion pricing to drive into Manhattan, up to $20, double that for trucks. Housing is insanely expensive (as always). Almost 10% state tax and additional 3% NYC tax. 8.875% sales tax on everything. Many high earners leaving, record commercial RE vacancies post- lock downs and work at home shift, worst gun laws in the country, noise cameras with fines up to $2,000. Catch and release cash free bail District Attorneys…
