CFP seedings 1st edition 2025

This is all about the "eye test"......which is just dumb.

Indiana is undefeated....beat Oregon on the road.

Ohio State is undefeated....beat Texas at home.

Texas A&M is undefeated....beat Notre Dame on the road (which should end the debate entirely according to the committee ranking ND)...beat LSU and Missouri on the road....and has Texas on the road at the end.

I'd say Strength of Record is a better metric.....but then the latest ranking for that has BYU at 8 and Texas Texas at 9.....right after Tech beat them by 3 scores.

I don't think Oregon should be as high as they are. They are getting credit for beating a #3 Penn State team that is now 3-6. Of course the Sagarin rankings still have PSU at #16. But then that means Ole Miss is too high as well since they've got a worst SOS and a worse remaining SOS. Only real difference between Oregon and Ole Miss.....Oregon lost at home to #2, Ole Miss lost on the road to #5.

It’s insane to me that Texas A&M is not #1

Their resume and FPI metrics are comparable if not better than both IU and tOSU and with a much higher SOS.

In previous years you cover up the names and the team with the Aggies resume is #1

It’s like they are purposely being subjective to a stubborn degree and placing way to much on the ‘eye test’.

Which to be honest should still favor A&M.

I think their “eye test” is more of a “talent level + recency bias” test. Ohio State has bought up a lot of talent and won it all last year, therefore they will continue to get the benefit of the doubt until they lose.

Ohio State is the defending national champion.
They haven't lost.

So I'm not sure why this is even a debate at this point. Indeed, it's the 1966 argument in a nutshell.

(And yes, I know it's changed, but the champ hasn't lost yet, either).

Totally agree. The AP thought they were smarter than everyone else with their preseason poll having Texas #1, Penn State #2 and Ohio State #3. Texas has 2 losses and has been unimpressive in their wins while Penn State has fallen out of sight. Had they followed the simple logic of keeping the #1 team from the prior season ranked #1 until someone beats them they would have been more accurate.

I think it would be hysterical if Duke wins out (favored by -6.5 over Virginia) / 78% chance of beating NC / 76% chance to beat Wake....and then your ACCCG is Georgia Tech vs Duke....and then Duke wins, making the playoff as an 9-4 team.

In that scenario, there is a good chance that the ACC doesn’t have anyone in the playoffs.

Literally meaningless argument as this OSU team has won NOTHING of consequence.

At this point, it has to be based on SOS or it's just emotional vomit based on 'whatever', such as who won what last season.

But but.....we "feel" Ohio State is the better team over Indiana. We "feel" that Indiana is a better team than Texas A&M.

We "felt" this and we "felt" that and just threw these rankings together.

I don't disagree with anything you said here - and I think the better case is made by 2014 Florida State, who weren't even assured of the playoff until the very end and IIRC there was one article that actually said that FSU (not Ohio State) was the team that didn't belong ahead of TCU that year.

Of course, I don't disagree with it as applied to 1966, either, which is a sore spot for some folks on this board who (unlike you or I) lived it. It wasn't the same team and they had the weakest SOS of the contenders "but a tie" apparently being a clinching argument.

My only "quibble" might be I'd opt for strength of RECORD over strength of SCHEDULE, but I also assume that's actually what you meant, too.

I think they should at least be #2. IMO they and Ohio State look like the best teams in the country right now

But is OSU really?

Now, I haven't watched them play all year but who among us real CFB fans think what they've accomplished so far is better than aTm? Should they be in the top 5? Yes. But I, for one, am not convinced they are the #1 team in the country. And argue all you want about them being the "Unbeaten Defending Champion" but the committee is supposed be tasked with determining this season 12 best teams, not the most deserving or how we feel they should be ranked.

Their defense is elite. They have a top 5 pick at LB. Sayin is completing 80% of his passes while throwing to 2 stud WRs. They're very very good. I think they should be a decent sized favorite to win it all (doesn't mean they will)
