They did and it was wrong (and eventually mostly blocked by the courts). However, it's not justification for what's happening now.

My whole point is the government gets involved in all kinds of stuff (IMHO) it shouldn't. Like it or not (and I don't!) that's just the nature of the beast.

But I wonder if the same people complaining about Kimmel were also complaining about the mandates.

He doesnt aspire to own the Constitution. He wants to ignore it...

That being said when you and your employer's interests are no longer aligned then you risk getting fired while doing so in the work environment.

Im a big believer in interstate commerce. That being said, you print the flyers for Kirk's vigil just like you should bake the cakes for the gay weddings...

I've been clear in my feelings about those who make distasteful remarks about the murder, but nothing justifies the government cracking down on free speech. The First Amendment has zero to do with this forum. The US Constitution is not owned by Trump.

Who makes that determination?

The same people who proclaimed the border is secure?

Or that men can have babies?

Bazza im probably not gonna take it too much further on this because I like you even though we can go way different in beliefs. But I’m just not going too much further if you are bringing trans rights and border security to a first amendment discussion.

My point was what Kimmel said was mild at best. And compared to what others on Fox and many prominent conservative outlets it wouldn’t even register as over the line. The reason this happened was because Trump directed it to happen. It is setting a very dangerous precedent in directly using an institution of the government to censor a political opposition program.

I'm sure hypocrisy abounds in these situations. And that the government often sticks its nose where it doesn't belong. But I refuse to go along with or excuse government suppression of free speech or the press because of past actions. Those rights are much too valuable.

Correct, but if you want either you should be allowed to get one...

How about threatening to fire you if you don't get the Covid vaccine?

Did our government ever do that to any Americans?

It's my body and the government has no business telling me if I don't want the jab...or have an abortion.....or.......

Again, if a man wants to have a baby and pay for the experience out of his own pocket, then let him have at it...

OK thanks - I respect your opinion and appreciate your friendship. ;)

Core characteristics of fascism
Though scholars debate a single definitive checklist, the following elements are generally considered core characteristics of fascism:
  • Dictatorial leadership: The government is led by a single, powerful leader who often cultivates a cult of personality.
  • Centralized authority: It advocates for a totalitarian one-party state, seeking to control all aspects of society, including the economy, media, and education.
  • Ultranationalism: The ideology emphasizes an extreme devotion to the nation, often accompanied by a belief in the nation's or a particular race's superiority.
  • Militarism: It glorifies the military and views violence, including war, as a means to achieve national rejuvenation and expansion.
  • Suppression of opposition: Fascism forcibly suppresses any and all forms of opposition, relying on propaganda, secret police, and fraudulent elections to maintain power.
  • Scapegoating: Economic anxieties and other national problems are blamed on specific groups, such as ethnic minorities, immigrants, or leftists, who are then demonized.
  • Antiliberalism: It rejects liberal democratic values like individual rights, freedom of speech, and competitive elections, arguing they create division and degeneracy.
  • Rejection of communism and socialism: Fascism positions itself as a direct opponent of Marxist ideologies, suppressing labor movements and socialist parties with violence.
  • Corporatism: The state directs the economy by integrating select business and labor groups into its policymaking, protecting corporate power while suppressing labor unions.

I could understand Kimmel could be in trouble for lying on air. Although, he IS a comedian and not a Hard News commentator. Broadcasters are still prohibited from the kind of nauseous conduct Cable can engage in.

Having said this, where was the lie? He said some things and played some clips that hurts people's feelings. A mirror is a harsh judge. Hard to stare to deeply or too long without getting your ego bruised. This is not justification for the FCC to threaten a license.

If someone can point out where exactly he lied about something, I would appreciated it. No news story I have read spells it out for poor liddle ol stupid me.

Has anyone mentioned that Nexstar is in the middle of trying to aquire TEGNA? "NIce merger you got there. Be a shame if something happened to it".

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/deal-acquistion-broadcast-nexstar-tegna/
Yep. And here’s more on that from CNN:

Nexstar, which operates about two dozen ABC affiliates, issued a press release saying it “strongly objects” to Kimmel’s remarks and saying its stations would “replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets.”

Notably, Nexstar is seeking Trump administration approval to acquire another big US station group, Tegna. The deal requires the FCC to loosen the government’s limits on broadcast station ownership.
Later in the evening, another big station group, Sinclair, said it had also told ABC that it was preempting Kimmel’s show on its ABC-affiliated stations before the network announced its nationwide decision.

Sinclair, too, has business pending before the Trump administration, and it made a bid for Tegna a day before Nexstar stepped in with its bid. The company announced Wednesday night that it will air a one-hour special tribute to Kirk on Friday night in Kimmel’s usual time slot.

Following ABC’s action to indefinitely pull Kimmel’s show off the air, Sinclair issued a statement saying the late-night host’s suspension “is not enough” and called on the network, the FCC and Kimmel to go further.

“Sinclair will not lift the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on our stations until formal discussions are held with ABC regarding the network’s commitment to professionalism and accountability,” the company said in its statement. “Regardless of ABC’s plans for the future of the program, Sinclair intends not to return Jimmy Kimmel Live! to our air until we are confident that appropriate steps have been taken to uphold the standards expected of a national broadcast platform.”

Sinclair said it demanded Kimmel directly apologize to the Kirk family and make a “meaningful” donation to Kirk’s family and his organization, Turning Point USA.

It’s become a matter of who can kiss up to Trump the most. Bow to his wishes and he might let you do what you want. In the meantime, the US Constitution is mere toilet paper for Republicans these days. To them, the only people who deserve rights are those who believe as the GOP and its morally bereft leader dictate. Let’s be clear: Trump and the Republican Party oppose freedom and liberty for anyone not part of their cult and will stop at nothing to punish those people it deems unsuitable. Republicans are AMINOs: Americans In Name Only.
