I got this recipe out of southern living mag a couple of years ago..
Chew Cake
(Favorite of Paul “Bear” Bryant)
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ lb brown sugar
1 cup nuts, broken
½ stick butter, melted
Preheat over to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 x 13 inch pan. Mix eggs with flour, baking powder, brown sugar and melted butter. Add nuts and spread a thin layer in pan. Bake for 50 minutes. Cool in pan and spread with topping.
Topping
¾ cup sugar
½ cup milk
½ stick butter
½ teaspoon vanilla
Mix sugar, milk, butter and vanilla. Cook in a heavy saucepan until it forms a soft ball (234 degrees F). Cool, beat until thick, and spread on cake in pan.
Yields 8 to 12 servings
