I'f I remember it correctly Keith Jackson was the original play by play announcer on Monday Night Football. Frank Gifford replaced Keith because Frank appealed to the ladies more, in an effort to increase the female audience.

Keith Jackson was the best. I enjoyed the late Curt Goudy also. He did the old AFL with Joe Willie first came to the Jets. NBC had the AFL and CBS had the NFL. Loved the Jet vs. Raiders with Curt calling the game. I forget the names as the years have gone on, but there have been some good ones that are as good as those today. Age just makes me forget all their names. Pat Summeral was good in his day also. Someone mentioned Tim McCarver. The day he retires, I will celebrate. I cannot stand that guy. Simply do not like him. Joe Buck does a decent job, but not McCarver, yuk.
I agree--Curt Goudy was great. But his sidekick, Paul Christman, was terrible!

I'd like to hear Ron Franklin on play-by-play and Gary Danielson on color. I think they're the best two at those positions in recent memory. Ron is my all time favorite on those classic ESPN night games. I can still see him at the intro of one of the iron bowls with Jordan Hare in the background - i think it was the 2001 game where we kicked them 31-7 and as the kick-off was about to happen and the camera's went from him and zoomed towards the stadium, he said - "Ladies and gentlemen, there are rivalries, and there are rivalries - (pause) - and then there's Alabama vs Auburn." I still get chills thinking about that.

I'll take Verne and Gary. I like them as a team.

Did anybody notice Verne's gafe in the Florida-Georgia game Saturday when he said, "Hes by far the biggest Georgia running back at 6'2 247 yards"

LOL....how could you replace something like that?? :)

No one...I mean no one...could call a night game in Tuscaloosa better than Gottfried and Franklin. I don't know what it was...but the bass in Franklin's voice mixed with the pitch of Gottfried's was enough to give you chills. Throw in Adrian Karsten on the sideline...and you have the best crew in the history of college football.

Sure, Keith Jackson was great, but as a team, you cannot get any better than Gottfried, Franklin ,and Karsten.

They did me in with Keith Jackson when they hijacked the National Championship game years ago with his retirement. It was either FL St vs Tenn or FL St vs Oklahoma. It seems the entire broadcast was about him instead of the game.

Without a doubt, my fav is Ron Franklin, "he has five, ten, count em off at 15 yards." I liked Gotfried, but I also liked the guy before him, Kevin Kiley.

Saturday nights are not the same without them. Nessler is about as good as it gets now.

I agree, those games on ESPN on Saturday nights during the 90's and early 2000's were the best with Franklin and Gottfried. Enjoyed the commentating. I also like Nessler and Blacklidge now but they don't stand up to Franklin and Gottfried. Would have enjoyed hearing their commentary to Les Mile's grass eating last year.

I think the title says Classic Announcers- I grew up listening to John Forney's voice so I would listen to him on the radio and watch it with the volume on the tube turned off. But Keith Jackson . I love his call of the 92 Sugar Bowl.... He had several classic lines . Its a shame we had Mufflesburger announce our last NC. I turned the sound down and synced the DVR to Eli's broadcast on the radio so I didnt have to listen to him.

Madden and Verne and Keith Jackson.... oh it would be so fun....
Verne, John did you see the way Vonta NighBower met him in the hole and WOOOOOWWWWW did he blow that play up....?

John: Yea Verne, what you just saw was how Hightower saw the run develop here (draws funny line on screen) he keys on the LSU running back (circles LSU RB) and he fills the hole and sheds this pulling lineman (circles pulling lineman) and, and, and,...i tell ya that Hightower kid he's pretty good he kind of reminds me of what i call a MANIMAL. he's that special kind of player you know, the Captain of the defense kind of reminds me of Dick Butkis with a little Mike Singeltary mixed in, but he just processes this so fasr and BOOM there he is with a crushing tackle and..and...um yeah he just blew that play up

Keith: Whoaaaa nelly, i don't know there about all that John, but i tell yea running on this Alabama Defense is like trying to climb a cactus you know....

A game (for me, but I'm too young to remember past announcers) wouldn't be the same without Eli Gold, so he's the announcer I'll be listening to and the only one I'd want to listen to. ;)
