Clemson & How we match up...

Let's do a little evaluating, Lord knows we need a little X & O's talk after this week...

First off, Clemson is VERY good. You give this team a coach besides Tommy Bowden and think they're a consensus top 5 team. Proven Senior QB, backup will probably eventually be better than him. CJ Spiller is the most explosive player I saw in college football last season and he's James Davis' backup. I think they compare fairly well with McFadden/F. Jones last season.

Daquan Bowers graduated early and looked good in Spring practice and we all know what a tough time we've had with good Rush Ends lately. Their D-Line is very good (yes, a few actually survived Auburn's ACL Annihilation Party in the Peach Bowl).

So it seems to me that our biggest weaknesses, youth/inexperience at LB and DL don't often fare well against a proven, seasoned QB and GREAT RB's. Our OL has been rated pretty highly in the preseason, but we'll have at least one totally unproven spot at RT. And our conversion from 'buckstep' OL technique didn't look to be complete at the end of last season, either. Let's hope we have made some strides.

Someone make me feel better about how we matchup with "Auburn + A Lake"

I'm praying this new offense can put up about 50 or 60 points. (LOL) I know it's going to be hard to stop them. If CTB does the play calling we have a chance. Maybe even a good chance. Their running attack will be brutal. I'm hoping the D can slow them down and CNS can pull something out of his sleeve. Wish I could make you feel better, but I don't feel to good myself. Of course I haven't said anything you don't already know.
Remember the U.S. hockey team back in 1980 or so, thats what I'm hoping for. Do you believe in miracles, I sure do. Roll Tide!!:BigA:

BAMA won't be able to stop their offense cold but I am hoping that the Tides angle will be to put up a bunch of points and do what we can to slow the scoring from Clemson. EVERTIME the Tide gets the ball it needs to equal points on the board!!

Guys I know you arent familiar with clemson since they play in the ACC but let me give you some historical perspective. I was at clemson sudying/working for around 8 yrs. In that time they have had stellar recruiting classes and amazing athletes every single yr. The defense has always had huge linemen and the secondary has always had great athletes (for a while they had the equivalent of CBC coaching their secondary). They have had "frisbee-catching dogs" for receivers every single yr. They have been ranked most of those yrs as well. Now here's the good news:

Not once in a subpar ACC have they won the conference or even their own division (might have tied for their division once). Every yr they have been ranked high they have completely imploded. Up until 2 yrs ago they routinely got blew out of every big game they played, not just lost, but didnt even show up. They regularly lose to Duke and Wake forest. Every yr people have wanted to have Bowden fired and somehow he barely makes it through... usually by beating diddy. Their mantra is inconsistency. They do have 2 good coordinators who have raised the consistency level but clemson can never ever be counted on to show up. Even when they do, they arent known for blowouts. Trust me, they get hyped up every yr and have failed to meet expectations even once. We really dont need to be that worried. We took LSU to the wire, we took Georgia to the wire, we can certainly beat an average acc team.

This is a big first game for both teams. I have to give the edge to Clemson right now, they are talented and as Blood Red stated above, very strong in the run game. IMO, I think they have two of the best backs in the country, along with Mareno at GA. Obviously they are ranked fairly high going into the season and this game sets the tone quickly for both teams as to how their seasons may go.
For BAMA it will be about finding some chemistry, especially on offense under Coach Mac. Bama has some talent, but much of it will be young and inexperienced, especially at WR on offense and LB on the defensive side.
I think Clemson will try and pound out a run game, and throw to their backs to get them the ball alot so our defense will be tested, especially our linebackers.
For Bama, I think its all about the defense. The matchup I'll be watching is our defensive line against their offensive line which has some weaknesses. If our defense can pressure and create havoc in the backfield, BAMA will have a good chance to win. I think our offense, will be able to put up enough points to win, but it won't be easy for a new offense to get in rhythym right away. I think BAMA will try and get our running backs involved early and often in passing plays to help with that.
I think the QB's are a wash, both are seniors and both are talented enough to have very good games. If JPW gets in a rhythym early, ala TN last year, all the better our chances. Clemson's defense is good, but I expect our OL to be much improved over last year, and I think they'll give JPW enough protection to make some plays.
If Clemson is able to run at will, it could be a long day for BAMA. They are very good. This won't be an easy win for BAMA, even if they can pull it out.:BigA:

This should help you feel better, from the capstone report

Tough, but winnable game
Clemson is a tough game to begin the 2008 campaign; however, the game is winnable. Here’s why:
OFFENSE: Clemson boasts one of the best backfields in college football. Senior quarterback Cullen Harper set a host of records in 2007—21 records in all. Harper’s stats were impressive 282 of 433 passes with 27 touchdowns and six interceptions.
He was sacked 35 times last year.
And that is where the Clemson offense must improve for 2008 to be a special year. But, the offensive line will see four new starters from last year’s problematic unit. Turnover like that means the line must establish cohesion during August and the early weeks of the season.
Clemson’s line wasn’t able to open much running room during three big games in 2007. The Tigers amassed just 8 yards rushing against Virginia Tech, 34 yards against Georgia Tech and 47 yards against Boston College.
The line must provide much more physical play, so that Clemson’s stable of star running backs can produce.
Senior running back James Davis should lead the way for Clemson’s ground attack. The senior has over 3,000 career rushing yards and 36 career rushing touchdowns. Last year, Davis contemplated jumping to the NFL, but returned to Clemson.
But the backfield doesn’t end with Harper and Davis. C.J. Spiller forms another cog in Clemson’s offensive arsenal. In 2007, Spiller rushed for over 700 yards. He provides a change of pace with his speed. In the Chick-fil-A Bowl, Spiller amassed 112 yards on 8 carries, including an 83-yard touchdown run. Spiller is also a threat on special teams; he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns last season.
Complementing the running game are returning starters at receiver. Seniors Aaron Kelly and Tyler Grisham provide explosiveness on the edges. Kelly caught a school record 88 passes for 1,081 yards last season. Grisham had 60 receptions last year for 653 yards. Another weapon to watch catching the ball and stretching the field is Jacoby Ford.
Getting the idea why Clemson is a consensus Top 10 school in 2008? They have proven weapons in the backfield, and at receiver. The question mark, and it is a big question mark, is the offensive line.
It bedeviled Clemson last season, and will prove problematic starting 2008.
DEFENSE: Last year’s Clemson defense was in the Top 25 of the major defensive categories of scoring, rushing, passing and total. The Tigers were 10th in scoring, 23rd in rushing, 13th in passing and 9th in total. And that unit returns 8 starters.
The strength of the Clemson defense just may be its secondary. All four starters return from last season, and the Tigers boast a pair of top safeties in seniors Michael Hamlin and Chris Clemons. Hamlin and junior cornerback Chris Chancellor led the team with four interceptions each. The other corner, junior Crezdon Butler picked off three passes last year.
The corners helped the Tigers hold opposing teams to an average of 188.5 yards passing per game. Safety Hamlin led the team in tackles with 97.
The defensive line returns three of four starters. While the team lost Phillip Merling to the NFL, Clemson hopes freshman DaQuan Bowers could help fill the void. Bowers was a top recruit (rated a five star by Rivals). He brings 4.57 speed to the defensive end position. Expectations are as big for Bowers as some of Alabama’s top signees.
The hole in the Clemson defense is at linebacker. The Tigers face a dilemma perhaps as bad if not worse than the Tide. The Tigers must replace all three starters off last year’s team. The most recent loss was senior ILB Cortney Vincent. Bowden kicked Vincent off the team at the end of spring practice.
Without a doubt, linebacker is the least experienced part of the Tiger defense. Alabama should be able to attack this element of the Clemson front seven.
ANALYSIS: A matchup to watch is Alabama’s John Parker Wilson versus Clemson’s secondary.
We expect Alabama’s offensive line to provide sufficient protection for Wilson against the somewhat inexperienced Clemson front seven. This means Wilson should have time to make his decisions, and when Wilson has time he can be effective—just take a look at the tape of Wilson’s masterpiece against Tennessee.
However, if Alabama’s line reverts, then Wilson will have serious problems against a strong, experienced Clemson secondary.
The game will be determined by line play—Clemson’s offensive line. The line is suspect with four new starters , and the Tigers must replace two All-Americans.
Not an easy task. Much more difficult when you face a Nick Saban defense to start the season. Cohesion is a major recipe for offensive line success. Disrupting the cohesion is a strength of Saban’s scheme. The combination of this being a season opener and the limited time for Clemson to develop line chemistry during preseason drills, the defense has a substantial advantage.
If Alabama’s defensive line can exploit Clemson’s limited unit cohesion, it would go a long way to controlling Clemson’s explosive running game and passing game.
Score Projection: Alabama 31-Clemson 28

The line play is very important in any game. IMO the key to this game will be missed/ broken tackles by our young LBs. I think our DL will be decent, at worst, against their young OL. That will create opportunities for the LBs to make plays. If our guys can make plays and not get run over (a la DMac) then we should win.

I think the fact that Clemson's O line struggled last year and now they are having to replace four of them with most likely freshman gives us a big advantage. If T Cody pans out like I think he will based on the skel reports I have heard, Clemson will struggle a lot on offense. If our offense can gel quickly we have a good chance to win this one.

It's gonna be a good one for sure. The key, IMO; is whether or not T. Cody can command a double-team in the middle against their green O-linemen. If so, we should be able to stuff their run game sufficiently to keep Davis and Spiller out of any kind of rhythm. If not, it may be a long game. I vote for the good guys. RTR

Sorry for the almost dupe Glory. I got distracted for a few minutes and you quoted me before I got to post this one.
How'd you do that?

great minds think alike I guess. I have been hearing great things about Dareus as well and hopefully Motley will be back at DT after mending. I think they just moved him to the O line in the spring due to the broken hand(?) and how it effected his ability to play DT.

I'm not sure why some of you think we are going to have to put up big points to when this game. As a couple of posters have pointed out, Clemson will have four new starters in their offensive line. I think our d-line will be better than average. I think it's going to be one of the strong points of our team in '08.

Spiller is an excellent back, but if our defense wraps up and tackles well, I really believe we will contain Spiller because I believe their offensive line is going to struggle in this game with all the new faces.

It's the first game of the year for both teams and the offenses generally take a couple of weeks to get it in gear. I look for a close game, but I see Alabama winning a close low scoring game, 17-13.

Good thread, and just in time. Pretty much every game is won and lost on the line, so Bamaglory and jps1983--you guys seem right on track to me. I know that several of you here (especially the mods) are much more in the know than I am in my SW Louisiana exile, so I'll do more listening than typing concerning the X's and O's.

I do know this--we have to be able to battle giants without fear if we are to reclaim our place in the college football kingdom. Iron sharpens a blade; dirt dulls it. I would rather see these types of games than I-AA games (or BCS sub-division, or whatever the term is this year) for opening the season.

Clemson is a tough test. Good. Bring it on.
