Croom Article

I've seen the man on television and heard him on the stadium loudspeakers, but old tapes can't bring a man to life. I came of age and came to this state too late to completely understand and fully appreciate the depth of feeling for Bryant that remains two decades after his death.

But I understand and appreciate the man, the myth, the legend a little better today. I've witnessed Sylvester Croom.

Sly Croome is a good man and should do well at MSU. The Scab is still a putz though.

He will be given quite a bit of time to groom together at MSU but I am not sure its going to be as much of a fairy tale story as many are already making it.

Sly will do a good job at MSU, gthere's no reason why he won't. He's been a good coach everywhere he's been, he's well grounded in the basics and is highly regarded by a lot of very knowledgeable football folks. Coach Bryant sure liked him and that's good enough for me.

I sense that some folks are kinda hoping he falls flat on his face because of the controversy over him not being hired in T-Town. I sure hope I'm wrong about that because that's beyond petty. He's part of the BAMA family and I wish him nothing but good luck, except when MSU plays the TIDE.

You can count me in this bunch. I'd rather not have the genious media and historians comparing Shula's record to Crooms throughout history, especially if Croom does win. I can hear them already..."Shula has been successful in the last 7 years, winning x SEC championships, and x NC's, but look at what Croom has done with less talent, tradition, ect..if Bama had not been racist, then who knows how many championships Croom would have won"...If Croom wins, we will never hear the end of it. However, if Croom loses early and often, then it will show that our decision makers really did know what they were doing, and it will put an end to the debate. But thats just my opinion, I could be wrong...

I agree totally. I am sure that he is everything that people says he is, but why should we want him to be successful at another SEC West school. That's like saying , "Boy, I sure hope Houston Nutt or David Cutcliffe wins 'em all except when they play us."

I pull for Alabama. Not anyone else. MSU and Croom included.

Interesting that some of us feel no loyalty or pride for players and coaches once they're no longer part of the program. It's also sad and myopic.

Sly Croom was an asset to ALABAMA while he was here as both a player and an assistant coach. He continued to reflect positively on The University as he pursued his chosen profession as a football coach. Success came to him as a result of his hard work and I find it incredible that any BAMA fans wish him to fail.

I am loyal to my University before I am loyal to a person who played there. The reality is that if Croom is successful, then him not being hired will create, or support an already present stigma that the University of Alabama fans and administrators passed over a good coach based on race (which we all know was not the case). If Croom fails, then the decision to pass him over will be justified.

My opinion is based on my affection for the University of Alabama, the sports programs and the decision makers in charge. The reputation of the school is more important to me than any former player. Thats just my $.02, and I will post no more on this topic.

I for one hope they do. There is no reason to hope all other SEC schools do very bad just so BAMA can look great. I would hope all the schools look good and win games so the SEC can continue to be a power house confrence like it has been in the past. The higher they are ranked when we beat them the better it is for us. We would never win another championship if all the team we play are 0-10 each year. We would then be the FSU of the SEC.

Heifer dust.

So, your loyalty is conditional, huh? No matter if Sly's only sin in your eye's is that he worked hard and succeeded in his chosen profession. I always thought that was what made America so great, the fact that a person, ANY person, can be successful if they are diligent, work hard and play by the rules.

I could care less if any SEC team other than Bama wins anything. That being said though I hope coach Croom owns the state of Mississippi. If he can have some winning seasons and look good by beating UT, AU ect., then I would fully expect him to be offered a more attractive job outside of the state of Mississippi.

Penn State possibly? That is if Spurrior isn't allready there.

I totally agree. If he succeeds, its not good for Alabama, and I'm talking about recruiting. Its the same with Tubby, Nutt, Cutcliffe, etc. I pull for no one but Alabama. I've said it before, if Coach Croom were at Nebraska or Texas, I'd pull for him. But not when he coaches right down the road. It was the same when Sherrill was there. He's a good coach, and seems to be a good man. I know he was a great player and assistant coach under Coach Bryant and Perkins. But I would rather see Alabama do well than MSU.
