Same storyline, different source:

Bold talk from Smith's lawyer, saying there is no cause and they'll fight to get the buyout and clear his name.

Somebody's made a bad mistake here, though it's not yet clear who that is.

If Ohio University fired Smith without cause, yet cited "serious misconduct" in the process of publicly kicking him out the door, they've without doubt done damage to his reputation and career.

So what would constitute "serious misconduct" warranting immediate termination?
- Could be the ever-popular "inappropriate relationship" with a staffer.
- Could be an "inappropriate relationship" with someone outside the Athletic Department or even outside the University.
- Could be misuse of University funds.
- Could be physical or emotional mistreatment of players or staff.
- Could be allowing physical or emotional mistreatment of players by coaching or S&C staff that he knew or should have known about.
- Could be player-on-player hazing that he knew or should have known about.
- Could be players victimizing other students or townspeople, which conduct he knew about, condoned, or otherwise should have stopped.
- The above covers the usual suspects, but it could be something else I can't think of right now.

Thing is, if any of those actions rose to the level of immediate termination with cause, you would think they would be corroborated with hard evidence.

If the University fired him with cause, Smith and his attorney are playing catch with a jar of nitroglycerin. If there really is cause and the confirming evidence becomes public, Smith's name and judgment will be trashed forever.

Of course, the attorney's big talk could be just a negotiating ploy, trying to get at least part of the buyout in exchange for shutting up and going away. If so the fact that it's Ohio University, and nobody outside of the parties involved really cares all that much, plays into his hands.

I sincerely hope there’s nothing to this and that CKD sticks around. That said, here are the only reasons I can think of that he might make this move:

1) It’s closer to where he grew up, and he spent time as OC about 8 miles down the road in Ypslanti.
2) Courtney Morgan is a UM alum.
3) It’s (arguably) easier to make the playoffs on an annual basis in the B1G.

That’s it. If he leaves, these will be the reasons.

Given his emphatic statement about loving it at Alabama and having zero interest in Penn State, I would be mildly surprised but not shocked to see him have interest in UM - but again, the above reasons are the only things that make sense to me.

Hypothetically, if he were to leave, I would support making Sark and Lanning say “no”. Given that Sark reportedly was considering a jump to the NFL earlier this season, and also his alleged dissatisfaction with the obscene level of booster involvement at Texas, I think there would be a chance that he’d listen to overtures this time. Lanning would be a good hire as well but I’m not sure how interested he’d be.

Absent those two, I’d totally support promoting Wommack. Super likable guy, great recruiter, prior HC experience in the state of Alabama, and a good chance for roster stability.

I hope we don’t need to even have this discussion but those would be plans A, B & C if I were Greg Byrne.

Given that we have a playoff game coming up, if there’s nothing to this IMO DeBoer needs to issue a statement ASAP.
All that DeBoer to Michigan sounded like all the Saban to Texas.

All that DeBoer to Michigan sounded like all the Saban to Texas.
But I think the difference is that Saban at least listened. Based on everything I've heard, DeBoer doesn't even want to listen. It sounds like Michigan is going to force him to say no their face, but based on what McElroy said this morning, It seems to be a nonstarter for him.

McElroy said that, while the media'¢ narrative is that the timing didn't work out, that's not necessarily the case. It wasn't really a secret that Harbaugh was leaving Michigan that off-season. Everyone knew it, even at the time DeBoer took the Bama job, so he could've waited if he really wanted that job as they say. McElroy said that the reason he didn't is because he wasn't okay with the optics of ditching Washington for the team that beat him in the championship game. If this is true, then there is no way he would leave Alabama right now, because that too, would be seen as a cop out.

The Ohio University thing has been kind of weird and going on for several weeks. The University never announced that Smith was suspended or “on leave” or anything about an investigation. They just stated that assistant John Hauser was the interim head coach. Everyone was asking about Smith but the University remained quiet until the announcement today.
