Well, we went through that last thread fairly quickly. Time for a new one.

The Delta variant is tearing through unvaccinated populations ruthlessly. This was expected and people were warned.

How contagious is the Delta variant?
On average, every person infected will infect 8-9 others. For the original virus this was closer to 2.5-4.
Delta is as contagious as chickenpox, but what does this mean?
Place 99 random people who lack immunity into a room with one infected person for a few hours and 85 of the 99 will walk out infected.

This is why the curve on the charts of cases and hospitalizations currently looks so steep.

With Delta appearing to be every bit as - and possibly even slightly more - deadly compared to the original version of this virus and deaths lagging hospitalizations we should soon see a sharp rise in deaths.

More than 95% of hospitalizations are unvaccinated.

98-99% (give of take) of deaths are unvaccinated.

Delta has changed everything. The vaccines are not as effective, but they are still protective against infection and, therefore, also against transmission. They are still very protective against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. No vaccine has ever been 100% effective, though, and this one is no different.

In areas of substantial or high transmission masks are recommended - even for the vaccinated. This is partly to protect the vaccinated - especially those at higher risk - but mostly to protect the unvaccinated (and many vaccinated people are not happy with this situation for multiple reasons).

Is there anything that will actually move the defiant and the hesitant off the fence? The surge seems like enough to my eye, and it has prompted some. I am afraid that a great number are relying on severely defective sources for information and believe their "alternative facts" are just as good as the real facts. I sincerely hope they wake up before reality slaps them awake as it has done to a number of others, including some high profile people. Some of those have died wishing they had gotten the vaccine after downplaying the threat and poo-pooing the vaccines. Meanwhile, reports continue of some denying reality even as they get ready for intubation and take what is potentially their last voluntary breath on this Earth.

Now isn't the time to dither or to bicker or to listen to sources who live in their own fantasy land. It's past time to listen to people who know their stuff and above all tell the truth (sorry, anti-vax sites are not telling you the truth).

With the high rate of transmission occurring there is concern that an even worse variant will emerge. I hope and pray that can be avoided.

More and more schools and employers are mandating the vaccines to protect the health of their clients and employees. That tide is shifting in one direction and gaining speed. Employers do have this right and employees have the right to find another job. Freedom is not a one way street and there are consequences for certain decisions, just like always.(that's actually a "conservative" and classical liberalism stance)

It's very likely with emerging variants that a booster or otherwise updated vaccine will be needed sometime in the future. When? Who knows? It's actually a very good question. Just consider it a likely inevitability.

Poll answers are private like all similar previous polls to encourage honest answers and participation.

Just to make something clear: We encourage legitimate questions, comments, and sources even if they are not the popular opinion on this board. We highly discourage trolling and disinformation and such posts are subject to removal, though that depends. Please self-check your sources.

We prefer not to wade into removing content and we do expect adults to be responsible. Harmful content is generally against the rules, much like racist content is against the rules. If adults will be adults and moderate themselves then I just wasted my time talking about it.

Some of the staff of my parent's church were responsible for over 80 COVID infections and one of their church members dying. Several of their staff members went to a leadership camp, and at least two confirmed of those staff members contracted COVID while on the trip. The church had VBS the following week and within two days had to cancel it due to a COVID outbreak. When it was all said and done there were 80+ COVID cases and a church member dying.

I told my parents, at some point, it wouldn't surprise me if the court system doesn't start allowing lawsuits for people who knowingly have symptoms (regardless if tested or not) and attend work or some sort of organizational gathering.

While I can see arguments that these groups were negligent, many states passed COVID immunity laws that may shield them from any liability. Our bishop directed us to place the COVID liability signs at our church. (By the way, we're back to wearing masks there.)

Thanks for a great summary both of fact and of our current situation. We made a late decision to skip church Sunday and go via webcast. Is it the same? No...but it is safe. I am just praying, hoping and talking up that this upturn must be accompanied by a serious surge in vaccination. That is the only way we are going to put this in our rearview mirror in any fashion. I realize it will be here forever, but it does not have to dominate our lives if we will be smart about it.

I think it is, after our area made the national news as one of the worst "hot spots" for COVID infections, there has been a massive surge in people getting vaccinations. That is a good thing.

Yesterday I got a group text. We're having a zoom committee meeting tonight to discuss covid safety and procedures in cub scouts.
We had an event in July at a pool, but honestly a month ago felt much safer.

My middle son is invited to a birthday party on Friday evening. I said yes, a month ago, and am now thinking of just dropping a gift at his house instead.

Edit - I think I'm going to text the Dad. I feel terrible about it, but they are in the same class and will be seeing each other anyway.
Or go and wear masks. Not sure yet.

outdoor party? Not that outdoors in Mobile in August is something anyone wants to do but better than indoors right now

Just reading Amber Schmitke's GA update

Here https://amberschmidtkephd.substack....pKUJlPebYFv9eF5tyK6j7AFxgPLm8Jh2GKQnYGeb7I-iw

and this part stood out at the end

Parenting an unvaccinated child during the delta surge
This week my family made decisions to cancel vacation travel and concert tickets that were purchased in March. We were riding the high of vaccinations and the freedom we expected to have with them, while also assuming that a pediatric vaccine would be available by fall. Instead, here we sit with a 10 year old who is too young to be vaccinated as cases surge in our area (Kansas City).

The vacation was scheduled for Labor Day weekend and would have featured air travel with multiple layovers. The concert was Garth Brooks. Even though it is an outdoor concert, I’m not taking any risks.

The news reports seem to waffle when it comes to when the Emergency Use Authorization will be granted for kids aged 11 and under. I read a report yesterday where Pfizer indicated they expected EUA by the end of September. However, I’m concerned that even this estimate, which is better than the “mid-winter” estimates we were given earlier, will be too late to protect the majority of America’s school-aged children. With the heightened transmission of the delta variant compared to previous variants and the lack of disease mitigation standards universally applied across all schools, I would not be surprised if virtually all US school children are exposed in the lunchroom or elsewhere in the building by the end of September.

Our church still has only web services, and they are very well attended. Even during the lull earlier this year, we have stayed cautious. We have done some outside events - but nothing inside.

Last year, our schools got rid of lunchroom lunch. They all ate in class, and usually just used the time to either watch something fun, or catch up on school videos.
Hopefully they will do the same this year.

FYI - I cancelled us going to the party.

Our church has returned to outside services for the contemporary (9:00), weather permitting and the traditional (11:00) indoors, all masked. We are located on a mountaintop and the weather is bearable at 9:00, even in midsummer...

I wish our church would do this. I'm just not attending. Choir practice started up last Wednesday.

our church is starting choir practice sept. 8th. my daughter is supposed to start back, but i'm doubting that will be the case the way things are looking.

it will be interesting to see the responses of churches, etc. in the next few weeks as the delta variant continues to worsen. we have decided we are holding off going back to church in person until this wave resolves. if i had to guess, i would say our church is probably 80%+ vaxxed (or at least the one's who would bother going now), but we just don't want to worry about it.

One comparison I've seen...

During the blitz bombing on London during World War II the local population was asked to turn off all lights at home at night so as not to give the bombers a target.

I understand compliance was universal with no squawking about the personal freedom to decide whether to turn the lights on and off.

"More, Madison argued that this other side of human nature, this concern for others, had to be operative if democracy were to survive. In fact, he insisted that, more than any other form of government, a democracy depended on virtuous citizens. Speaking at the ratifying convention for the U.S. Constitution in his home state of Virginia, Madison said:

“Is there no virtue among us? If there be not, we are in a wretched situation. No theoretical checks – no forms of government can render us secure. To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people, is a chimerical idea.”"

It appears to be Bedtime for Democracy...
