Dan hawkins mocks AJ's Critics

I remember the critics of Jay Barker when he first became a starter. We all know how that worked out.

It's wasn't just that he didn't want to make a mistake, he's been doing that all year, completely overthrowing his receiver on deep routes. However I wouldn't take anyone over AJ right now. He's completely unselfish, all he wants is to win an NC. He threw for 180-something yards against UF but looked liked the happiest player on the team post-game. He's played with these guys long enough, he knows the potential of the team, knows his role and embraces it. I'm surprised at how little he's tried to force things. I don't think he'll have to hit a deep pass for us to win it all this year. He's the perfect QB for this team.

Of course if he did start hitting the deep ball CFB would cease to be fair.
 
I wonder if AJ is overthrowing to make sure he doesn't underthrow where a defender can get to it so while trying to ensure only our receiver has a chance he ends up sailing it a little long. Just a thought watching previous attempts. Against lesser opponents, it seems his overthrows are just out of reach but against Arky and FL they seemded to be a couple of yards or more. Could be my eyes aren't what they used to be either. :)
 
I think AJ is a good QB who learned under one of the best and is learning and improving with every game he plays. What I really, really like about him is that he's just a sophomore and that we have two more years with him.
Can you imagine what kind of game manager he's going to be by the time he's a senior?

I agree 100 percent. I have seen a few things by A.J. that he probably wishes he could re-do, but I have been impressed with his poise, decision making, and arm strength to this point. I think he will be a qb that Tide fans talk about for years to come.
 
Every "winning" QB is a manager first...they have to get their team into the right formation, the right play, etc., at any given time. If the game requires, then AJ can start "winging it," I have no doubt. He may not throw for 3500 yards, but then if he does his job, he will not have to do so. That's the essence of a great QB!
 
I got a real problem with AJ:

He won't throw INT's and put our D in difficult situations.
He won't take risks like air it out and hope some catches it.
He won't stick with the play that was called, he just makes adjustments or audibles a new play.
He won't throw it to the primary receiver if he is covered, he goes and throws it to an open receiver.
He won't loose the game for us.

Man this guy is terrible! :wink:
 
I'd have to agree, He's over- threw several deep balls, which should improve given more rep-or with his receiving corp, and a little more air.

I don't think it's just the scandal. It's (Boulder, Colorado) one of the MOST Liberal areas in the country East of Berkley, Cali. They would support socialism in sports, I'm sure. Everybody needs to be equal. There are some people that are just more equal than others. Take for example Julio, Joe Willie, Hightower, et al.

Hawkins could be a winning coach; however, he just ended up at the wrong school to win. He should never have left BSU or should have taken a job at a school that could win.

Dude, you better get a grip with that kind of comment. It has no place on this board. If you wanna talk politics, there's a place for it (the Non Sports board), but don't bring it here. And, besides that, your argument is weak at best. What in the world does "socialism in sports" mean anyway?

And, ummm, let me take a wild guess here....you've never been to Boulder?
 
Someone already stole my thunder, but the Cowboys, or Gamecocks would love to have our "game manager".

The reality is that the way we play, it is often more difficult on the QB than it seems. How many times did GMac HAVE to make a 3rd down throw, and he came through for us? The one indication you have that AJ is young is the number of times we throw on 1st down. When he's the man, his stats won't get better, we'll just end up only throwing when we have to.

There is a great NFL stats website, www.coldhardfootballfacts.com, that outlines what makes for success in QB play. Its not volume, but efficiency. AJ is very efficient by their standards. (BTW, based on their stats, Bart Star is the greatest QB in NFL history. They make a very compelling argument.)

I'm quite sure in a wide open offense, AJ would have monster stats.

Also, CNS responded to questions regarding the overthrows on deep balls. His comment indicated it wasn't all AJ. Sometimes the long ball needs to be on a line, if you are trying to beat the safety. As long as he continues to come through when we need him to (i.e. Fake FG at Ark) he's doing fine.

I'm sure he would too. If AJ was say at Univ of Houston where Kennum is at now he would put up monster numbers, but when was the last time a Houston QB did anything in the NFL. Both Saban's QB's at Alabama are on NFL rosters being suppossed game managers in college. The NFL appreciates game managers more than most think. If AJ keeps developing he will be on a NFL roster one day also.

I think John Parker was cut by the falcons this year during camp.
