My answer to Deboer's job status is simply, I have no idea. I was not a fan of his hiring, but considering the circumstances I was willing to give him a chance. As I said in another post, I have really lowered my expectations for Alabama. When you consider we still have to play UGA, UT, LSU, Missour,i and Oklahoma we could be anywhere between 6-6 to 9-3. Does that get him fired, IDK.
Yeah it’s not that we lost away games. It’s that we looked completely unprepared and like we didn’t want to be there.
That said, hopefully we break that trend tomorrow!
Following Alabama's run of 6 championships in 12 years and knocking on the door 2 or 3 times is hard to follow. That run was as incredible as UCLA's 10 out of 12 Championships in basketball. Gene Bartow followed Wooden and stayed one year. He build a solid program at UAB. Both those runs were similar to the prefect storm. A lot of things came together to create those streaks. The important thing is to stay competitive until you are established. Most great coaches only had about 10 years on top. Coach Bryant had 12 out of his 25 years at Alabama.
Who did you want that was a reasonable ask at the time? With whom would you now replace him if he were to go 8-4 or 7-5?
IMO, a 50 year old Nick Saban or Paul Bryant would both find it impossible to come close to what they did at this time. Not only has the talent been far more equally dispersed but the attitudes and power of the players have been dramatically increased, diminishing the power of the coaches. It’s a very different world, only oil fields or benefactors can provide any great advantage and even they don’t address all of the issues. Though hardly destitute, Alabama has neither.
Yep. People talk about how different it is to coach now and then complain when he doesn’t reproduce Saban’s success.
Let me drop this one on you guys: even Saban couldn’t reproduce his success with the current roster and circumstances, it’s why he retired.
Amen... I think DeBoer showed what he could do last night. Our roster is solid, need to work out the OL a bit and get some of the faster young OL playing to match his system and find another dude or two at DT and various things, but if they can do that and they are recruiting talent well...

There are two narratives when it comes to DeBoer.
One is the losing to inferior competition thing. Going back to Fresno St. where he lost in consecutive years to a 5-4 and 6-7 Hawaii team. Then at Washington where he lost to a 3-9 Arizona St. team. We know about the losses at Alabama.
The other is the big game coach, his record against teams ranked in the top 10, the fact that he's 2-0 against Lanning, Sark, and Smart.
His job security will rest with the prevailing narrative. Right now, the prevailing narrative (well earned), is big game coach. However, the margin of error is still relatively small.
For the record, I think the toughness I saw from Alabama last night gives him the opportunity to eliminate that losing to weak competition thing. He looked more energetic and motivated, the team looked more disciplined.

One is that he won two national championships
The other is that he finds a way to lose or gets into dog fights with far inferior talented ACC teams
With the former there is the asterisk of having two generational quarterbacks getting his butt out of binds and having Brent Venerables as a DC. But outside that run of 5-6 years… DeBoer is more impressive than Blabo
I dont think our LBs are getting much coaching at all. We are too busy trying to write small enough to get our defensive calls on a 3x5 index card...
I’m going to quibble with this. We have no idea if Saban or anyone else can have long term championship success in the current environment. It has only been in effect for 4 seasons, including this one. Is it a dumb system? Yes. But I wouldn’t bet that blue blood programs will cease being blue blood programs and coaches can’t win consistently just yet.
According to Sagarin, Alabama has played the #5 SoS thus far. I read elsewhere Alabama's remaining schedule is the 7th toughest. That's combining two SoS calculations but it should easily end up as a top 5 most difficult schedule.
This is a trial by fire. The upside is Alabama has a 69% chance of making the playoff according to FPI and even with another loss, Alabama would coast into the playoffs. They could even have a case with 3 losses, given this schedule is tougher than last year and the committee is supposed to have some sort of " record strength" metric for this year.
Georgia is one of the few teams in college football capable of physically matching up with Alabama. Other teams might have more skill, be more disciplined, have better schemes, but usually when Alabama steps onto the field they are bigger, faster, and stronger. Georgia could match that in every area and on top of that it was probably the most hostile environment Alabama will play in this year.
Tennessee, Oklahoma, and LSU might have the athletes to hang, but they're at home. Missouri and South Carolina are on the road, but they can't match up physically in the same fashion. Then there's Vanderbilt. That's a heck of a list but on an individual basis, those are all arguably more winnable games than the Georgia game. If DeBoer can build off of that performance and show continued improvement, he can make the playoffs and if he makes the playoffs with that schedule his job is safe for the foreseeable future.
