Did Coach Saban apologize to Houston Nutt?

I said in another thread that I think Houston Nutt and Mike Leach fall under the eccentric coaches that if given Les Miles level talent might produce the same results.

The thing with both of those guys is neither ever had a position to get truly elite talent so the results have always been erratic. However, if they were given a well stocked and well oiled machine like Les was, I think the same results would be possible. Flip thing around and I'd say the same, and given that Les Miles did put up Leach/Nutt type of results at Okie St. (8-5, 9-4, and 7-5) I think the results bear that out some.
I agree. While I am not as impressed with Nutt as others have been, I think his basic philosophy would do well if he could get talent and depth. Most coaches would be more effective in a captive talent rich place like LSU is now. I think Nutt would have been better than most there.

That said, if I were an LSU fan, even with Miles' idiosyncrasies, I would be happy that I had Miles over Nutt.

Haha. That's one rationalization of that game I have never heard. But hey, whatever helps you sleep better at night.
Yeah...when a team wins with a good lead, it's called being merciful...but when a team loses after having held a good lead, it's called being too conservative in the second half. Hard to tell sometimes with Saban because he seems merciful at times AND conservative when ahead.

Ya'll know CNS doesn't like to run up the score. He was very upset when Michigan State quit and couldn't even stop Lacy up the middle. He didn't like that happening to Dantonio and he probably didn't like it happening to Nutt. We win and go home. We're not out there to earn style points for votes like some teams.
As a coach you are just in a tough situation there. You can't ask your reserves to take it easy, they are all fighting for more playing time and you preach finishing to the team over and over. You want them to play as hard as if the game was on the line, every single snap. All you can do is basically run it up the middle and invite the opponent to stop you. If they can't then it's their problem.

Did anyone catch the way Kirby Smart was looking at Saban towards the end of the game?It looked as if Saban was telling them to play as soft as possible so we don't pile on any more points. And Kirby looked at Saban with the most disgusted and shocked face like :conf3: "I can't believe you're saying this".

Sorry but I would argue that we didn't lose that game because we were trying to be "nice". Saban's style is to play conservatively once they have established a nice lead...this does come back to bite you from time to time.
Did the Barn game teach Coach a lesson last year? You've got to let the back-up players play to prepare for the future.

I was really surprised that he let Phil Sims throw even ONE pass on Saturday. We do need to see Sims throw the ball more. Sims has done a great job closing out games by running the clock, but I would sure like to see him air-out a few.

I really did expect to get up this morning and find on ESPN that Ole Miss had FIRED the Nutt! I guess he could still surprise someone on down the line this year but I sure doubt it. LSU? No way.

How about Gerry Dinardo? He had good talent while at LSU and couldn't win. I think CHN would be a lot better coach at a school he could recruit better talent at.

I know we win with class but I truly hope CNS conservatism is near non-existent for the iron bowl. I believe it will be. Roll Tide

This. I would love to see Sims come in a little earlier and throw the rock. We have had most of these games well in hand by by mid 3rd qtr. Would love to see Sims get the opportunity to play like it counts for at least a couple series. He obviously needs the time standing back there looking at opposing defenses and adjusting to the speed of the game. But then what do I know, I don't get $4 million a year to make those decisions.

I would like to see Sims and some of the other players from the second squad a little more too. If I'm not mistaken, PS has played in every game so far this season, right?

I heard another commentator saturday night say again that Alabama runs up the score on teams by running the ball. If you know we're gonna run the ball every play from half way through the third quarter on out, and you can't stop it, what are we supposed to do, just lay down and stop playing?
I guess so.

When your third and fourth string HB is running up the middle after about the 10:00 mark of the third quarter and getting double digit yard runs, that's not running up the score. That's because the other team has given up, and that's having made their...um...butt quit. That's our M.O., that's what people know us as, aight?

Anyway, I think to answer the original threadstarting question, Saban told Nutt "I'm sorry that you suck." Pretty sure that's what he said.
