Did Shula turn the play calling over?

He still made some bad calls. He shouldn't have punted with 6 minutes to go. He just gave up and punted so it would be perceived as a close loss.....

I wondered the same thing because the play calling did seem to be improved! Kudos to him if he did! Either way I saw some things on offense that were unexpected!

PJ Fitzgerald trying to 15 yards around the corner on a fake punt ain't like giving Bobby Humphrey the ball and saying, "get 15 yards" PJ barely made it to the sideline, much less 15 yards down the field before getting his head ripped off. Did you watch the game???:)
By the way, I mean't when he punted on the next possession.....

it was still CMS. For lack of better wording, he went a "little deeper into the playbook" this week.
If he did not turn over the play calling (which 'looked much better'), how did he fare in gaining any more of your respect?

On that note, I was pleased with the fake punt decision, but i agree havin tthe punter run for it on 4th and 14 was kind of a stretch.

Play calling was much more imaginative for the most part. I gotta give Shula credit for that. He still calls that darn Darby up the middle at the weirdest times. I just will never understand that call, especially when you're short on time and need big yards. A great mystery to me.

Actually I thought the play calling in the run game was much improved it's just hard when you're handicapped with a bad OL going up against a terrific defense. Then again I've never really thought his play calling was all that bad this year anyway, I mean at times it's been a little lacking but I don't believe it's the reason for our struggles on offense.

Looked to be an excellently called game. The fake punt notwithstanding the play calling was balanced but just couldn't get the run game going. Your offense ate up our secondary. Looks like they took advantage of Daniels not being in the game. The turnovers and missed field goals were the difference. Had that not happened I have a feeling we would have had a different ballgame.

Hope everyone who made the trip had a good time. I spoke with a few of you and if anything you guys are a great group of fans. I'd like to make a trip to Tuscaloosa one day.

a lot of that is setting up for the play action.

I thought the toss sweep to open up our first series was something like a blast from the past.
I was thinking, 'where's that been'? And why not once or twice more now and then?
I have to admit that overall I thought the offensive play calling was more imaginative* and the execution improved from the last couple of weeks.
*I have to agree with Roll2Vic about the 'up the middle at the wierdest times'.
Well put Vic.

I would describe it as someone calling plays that may have realized he was being judged on that very aspect of his ability.

I'd agree with that to a point, but you have to wonder how an OL can do fairly well against the best DL in the nation one week and when we go back and look at other teams, with far inferior DL's, the results were ....well, let's just say not as good and keep it at that.

I've said this a couple of times and I'll likely continue pointing to it. Yes, it is a lack of execution...but, you are looking at the symptom, not the cause.

It looked to me like Shula actually turned the play calling over to himself and did and outstanding job doing so. When have we, the Alabama Crimson Tide, tried an onside kick, and a fake punt in the same game. Well, for all the games that I remember watching, NEVER. Even when CPB was the head, we have never opened the playbook up as we did last night. Kudos to Shula, he actually fears for his job and realizes he has to be more creative with the play calling. Hopefully, this creativeness will carry over next week and we blast "The Barn" for the first time in T-town. Rolll Tide!!!!!!!!

There was a diffence in the first half - Typically he is constantly checking the paper he has in his hands and talking in the mike - I saw a more than a few times when he was shown where he looked more to be responding and I didn't even know he had anything in his hands until the second quarter (something he usually has close to the eyes).

I believe he always lets Radar call a play, but usually he is either changing it or making it before Radar does. I think tonight, at least the first half, he sat back a bit. The calling definitely looked different and much more aggressive.

I am not saying it was against Shula's philosophy, but perhaps not the calls he would make under the circumstances this year.

At any rate, the second half he was much more animated in not only the play calls but EVERYTHING. He wanted this game and it was good to see him animated on the sidelines, the results notwithstanding.

How frustrating it is to lament the offense, then finally get a respectable showing while the defense gets schooled?

I have no complaints about our offensive game plan - I think the fake punt was the worst call of the game and at that point we were done anyway since our defense was not keeping LSU off the field.

We improved from last week. At least offensively. I applaud that. Now, coach Kines, get your guys back in focus!

We have a team on the ropes in desperate need of a knockout punch to seal their coache's fate (Miami, here I come!) next weekend and put a positive end to the regular season!

Thats what I was thinking....with about 9:30 left in the game Bama looked like they had conceded defeat no hurry up and they were running the ball????....I mean they were only down by 2 TD's at that point
