Do we ever have really good walk-ons?

More afflent players that really don't need the scholly pay their own way just so players that really need them have them available? Seems like I heard about Nebraska douing that in their NC years.

JP Adams might fit your question . He later became a Scholly guy but , he could've went elsewhere with a full ride from the start . He wanted to play for Bama , we were hit #'s-wise and JP has a parent that is a professor at the UofA .

Nebraska used to have or has something totally different . I believe it's something sponsored by the state .:conf3: I think at one time was called a "Good Hope" scholarship .

The NCAA used to allow Nebraska to have scholarships paid for by the various counties in the state for home town players and for some reason these did not count against their overall numbers or something like that.. At least I theenk so...

I'm probably wrong but I thought I'd take a shot at it. :BigA:

Most of our kickers are walk-ons.

Oh wait, you said really good, scratch that.

Jamie Christenson was an asset in 2005, and would have been last season if not for a nagging groin injury. PJ Fitzgerald, another walk-on K/P, is getting better and better and will become an asset at punter. Thinking back, we have had Lane Bearden (1999-2002) at P, who was a walk-on, and Brian Bostick, who was 1st Team All-SEC in 2004 at K. Kickers and Punters are just hit and miss, even the apparent great ones, like Mike McGaughlin, who never saw a down at 'Bama, but was a high school All-American in 2000. But hopefully Coach Ron Middleton will end our bad luck with K and P choices, while he is here. But I think his current players are going to make us proud, and be true assets to our team in 2007.

Kickers never get rated higher than 3-stars. At least if they do, I've never seen it happen. Last years #1 kicker Billy Bennet was only a 3-star.

Lane Bearden...... Now that wa one tough hombre of a punter/kicker!! I remember the run in between him and the So. Carolina linebacker in 2001 on the kickoff!! Dude thought he could cheap shot the "wuss kicker" with no retaliation? LOL!!! Classic!!
Then of course, him continuing to punt after he blew the knee!!
Legendary!!!

Every young man that walks on is a good one. It takes a special person to go out there every day and get knocked around by the schollys and screamed at by the coaches for the sake of playing for their school of choice with little opportunity to ever see the field on Saturday. These kids are our future leaders in other ways than football. Hats off to the Rudys of the world.
