Does Alabama need a symbolic hand gesture?

Have you ever seen Florida fans doing the gator chomp or Texas fans doing their hook 'em horns gesture and thought, "Man, it would be cool to have a symbolic hand gesture?"

I know we can always hold up the old No. 1, especially now ;) but I still think it would be cool to see 92 thousand fans at Bryant-Denny holding up a hand gesture in unison. Like Oregon with its O and Miami with its U, maybe Alabama can have an A?

When Mark Ingram scored the first touchdown in the NC game and held up his gloves to the camera, did you notice how his hands and arms formed an A? I know he was showing off his gloves, and I don't know if forming the A with his hands and arms was intentional or if he just held them up like that, but it's something I can go with. I like the idea. If you do too, pass the word and let's make it official. And send a big thanks to #22 for starting a new Alabama tradition.

I'll stick to old no 1. I'll leave hand signs, cowbells, rattling keys, and flying poultry to lesser programs.

I read the title and thought "Here we go, another lame idea..."

But, after reading it, it's actually not entirely lame. Will it catch on? Probably not. Alabama fans are slow to try anything new. Remember trying to get everyone to say "Roll Tide!" after each first down? Yeah, that was 3 years ago, and I still don't think it's really caught on.

Your idea is better than most, I'll give you that much. And I probably wont ever do it . . . unless everyone around me is doing it;) Then, and only then, will I succumb to peer pressure and admit that it was an ok idea. :biggrin2:

We've also got the 4th Quarter is ours hand gesture, holding up four fingers at the end of the 3rd quarter.

I can't remember the exact quote, but during the 92 Sugar Bowl Keith Jackson said something like:

"You see them holding up their four fingers? They're saying that the fourth quarter belongs to us. You might see a lot of teams doing that now, but that is Alabama!"

I think that one, and the number one, is all we need.

Heck, I don't know. I guess I would vote no.

I do know we were the first team to hold up 4 fingers indicating the 4th quarter belonged to us way back in the early 70's. This was due to most of our games being relatively close going into the 4th and our superior depth usually resulted in a much larger margin of victory.

Of course, now everyone does it. :biga2:

Personally I think Mark and Trent did it with the intentions of it forming an A - and I thought it was pretty cool - would I mind if the whole crowd did it when they scored, nope - do i think it will happen? No.

So because we have a "hand sign" we are lesser program? I love tradition and I love keeping Alabama how it has always been...but a hand sign? Come on man......it's a hand sign. Because it is done it isn't going to make us the next MS State of the SEC. I agree it probaly won't catch on but who cares....I think its kinda cool myself :)

I have a symbolic hand gesture for Tennessee and Auburn. Anyone care to guess how it looks? :eek2:

During the BCSNC game, I came up with a hand gesture to mock the overuse of the Texas hook-em gesture. I turned your symbolic gesture (I assuming it's the bird) upside down to create the elephant trunk. It worked out well because I could simply turn it up when someone talked smack during the game. I think I'll keep it around.

If anyone knew ASL, they could sign A, but if you didn't know ASL, then you would have no idea what is being signed!

I don't think a hand gesture is necessary. Now if the entire stadium would be as enthusiastic with their shakers as the student section, that would be really cool.
