Today is the birthday of the US Air Force. In honor to the finest air force in the world.

On February 13, 1945, the Allies bombed Dresden. This was the most controversial Allied air mission in the European theater during the war. Kurt Vonnegut was a POW in Dresden.
The front lines on that date were around here (this map is February 15, 1945).

The British and Americans bombed Dresden jointly (although separated by time, Brits at night, Americans by day).
This documentary explains the mission. No unwarranted fault-finding. No sensationalism. Just a clear-eyed assesssment. It is long, but worth watching.
The surprising thing about the mission:
I had not realized just how many military factories were in Dresden.
The horrifying thing was the civilians jumped into the large water tanks in the city to escape the fires and were boiled to death.
