Early numbers for CFP’s 1st Round fight vs NFL

Going directly against the NFL was foolish.

The interest in SMU playing against Penn State was always going to be minor. But Clemson vs. Texas was a name vs. a name... so I think the overriding factor was going head to head vs. the NFL.

You'll never convince me that Alabama against either Penn State or Texas doesn't pull a bigger number than that though.

TNT wasn't the only problem. Matching them against NFL teams like Steelers and Chiefs and it being terrible games killed it. I don't know what 3.1 means and I wonder if that was the whole game.
If that's indeed a ratings number and not a share number (as I believe it is - the author is imprecise), it means 3.1% of all US TV households tuned in. As not all US TV households are watching TV at any given time, the share (3.1 divided by the percentage of US TV households watching AT THAT TIME) would be something higher, and would be the share. Typically shows are ranked by rating/share, such as (and I'm making these numbers up) 3.1/9, meaning 3.1 percent of all US TV households were tuned in, representing 9 percent of all households watching TV at that time.

A rating absent context is about as useful as any other data point lacking context. To know how good or bad a 3.1 for a noon ET CFB kickoff is (and we all want the schadenfreude of having it turn out to be a bad number) would require someone's researching, say, the 2024 season numbers for all noon ET kickoffs to provide a comparison. At the same time, there's a reason this game was put in the least desirable slot. so the rating is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophesy...

Tennessee and Ohio State Peaked at 14 million viewers but averaged 9-10 million viewers. Sounds good right? Not so fast Alabama-Michigan did 27 million and Washington vs Texas 18.4 million.

Texas vs Clemson was at 8.6 million. SMU was at 6 million at peak. Non CFP NY6 bowls were averaging at 8 million last year.

They will spin it as a win but those aren’t the numbers that they were expecting when they started this.

I really wish the NFL would stay in their lane and stick with Sunday and MNF until the playoffs. They killed Thursday night CFB and are now stomping on the CFB playoffs.

The NFL has always (or atleast for the past 20 years)had a before Christmas Saturday and NY week Saturday game. It’s CFB that has created this war in late December over Saturdays. CFB wanted this war and thought the NFL would Flex out but found out that the nfl didn’t worry about the Mickey Mouse games that CFB put up against their prime matchups.

I miss the Thursday night CFB games too.

There is usually at least one CFB game on every night but M-F it’s usually something like Kennesaw St Tech vs Northwest Idaho Central U.

I don’t even know if those are real but that’s what they look like.

The Marquee stuff like LSU vs AU or FSU vs Clemson when those were actually matchups worth watching has been long gone.

Friday use to have pretty good PAC-12 games too but not so much now.

Everything has changed for the worse with CFB.

For most people, you can just tell them what the worst thing you can do in a particular situation and they will agree and avoid that course of action.

However, there are a select few people you have to show them or allow them to choose the worst thing for them to realize that it was indeed the worst outcome.

The second group is in charge right now...

It’s a lot longer than 20 years. More like 50 or so.

Maybe not much. Part may be many had no idea a game was on TNT. Some don't pay attention to that. They just flip through the channels, and may not have noticed it on TNT. But Alabama vs Penn St would have been a bigger draw.

The TNT argument really doesn’t hold water once you consider that the NFL streams on Amazon exclusively on Thursdays and still averages 16-18 million a game. Plus Max was an option for the TNT games as well.

I guess it’s possible for the casual fan. And I do think it’s crazy these games aren’t on ABC or CBS but I’ve felt that way about it since the BCS moved to ESPN back in the day.
