On the scorecards it lists each players experience. HS, 2VL, 1VL, RS, TR, etc. For Morrow it says SQ...we know he was here last year and he is the only player with this designation. Maybe I'm just clueless but nobody I've asked seems to know either. JoJo, DT, can ya'll help me out?

Thanks,

hmm

still wondering if Morrow is a JR or SR in eligibility. He played in a couple of games last year, but when I saw him a while back, he said last year counted as a redshirt for him. I don't know if the NCAA didn't grant it or what, but usually SQ players are guys who play but don't play enough to get a varsity letter..like in football.

Morrow is designated as SQ because he only appeared in three games last season and thus was unable to receive a varsity letter. Although he was out for almost the entire season with a broken hand, for some reason, he did not receive a medical redshirt. Basically, a year of his eligibility was wasted for just three games. He should be a redshirt junior, but because this did not happen, he is now a senior.

This is Bustareed,

The reason he didnt get a redshirt is not because the NCAA it is because Wells played Morrow in three games instead of sitting him. Thats Wells fault. As i recall The games he played in were meaningless. As i also recall Moorow was hurt with a broke wrist most of the year. In SEC baseball if you step across the line you cant be redshirted. That to me, is Coach Wells faulT. Instead of having Morrow for two years, now we just have him for one.

Ps. I got kicked off the site for a few weeks because Tide-Hsv said i was improperly critiscizing CMG. all i said was i didnt think his team was prepared to go play on the road. They didnt look concentrated against LSU.

I am not exactly sure how the whole medical redshirt procedure works, so what I don't understand is how T.J. Large, for example, who appeared in three games last year before a season-ending injury, received a medical redshirt, yet Morrow, for whatever reason, did not. I guess it might have something to do with the date and nature of the injury, medical opinions, etc.

Oh, and busta/Trey, "CMG" on this board stands for "Coach Mitch Gaspard." :cool2:

Medical redshirts

It is a 20% deal. If a player is injured in the first 20% of a team's games he is eligible for a medical redshirt (see Large in '04)

Thomley played late in the season thus does not qualify for the redshirt. I wondered when it happened why he was playing. I figured Wells felt the kid was never going to help him so he gave him a chance. Obviously this was not a wise decision.

makes sense. I know MOrrow played against Miss Valley State and that was well after SEC play had begun.

thanks guys

Not quite correct. If he does not participate in more than 20% of his team's games and he does not participate in any game past the midpoint of the season, he is eligible for an extra season of competition if the medical evidence shows that he could not have returned to play before the end of the season.

I have no idea where Bustareed/Trey is getting his information that an SEC baseball player can't be redshirted if he plays a game. That is just plain wrong. A medical harship waiver is an option for anybody in any sport in any league.

After a brief look through last year's box scores, MT was used as a pinch-runner in the Arkansas game on April 4. That was game 30 of a 56 game season (scheduled games including cancellations). I have not reviewed further, but the fact that he participated in a game in the second half of the season does away with any chance of getting a medical redshirt.

Thomley

Hindsight is 20/20. Did anyone on this board expect MT to do what he is doing now? And having played and watched enough baseball in my lifetime, it is not a foregone conclusion that MT will be playing this well two weeks into SEC play. I hope he is playing this well. But when SEC pitchers start to prepare for certain batters it gets real tough. He hasn't gone through SEC as a regular player yet. So, lets not put too much on him right now.

Thanks guys. Squad was what I was thinking but wasn't sure. Now that ya'll bring it up I remember his hand injury b/c it was the hamate bone just like Charlie's , right? I think the problem with that particular injury is that the Dr.'s can give an estimated time of healing but you can't really know. Charlie had pain in his palm through the summer. Big problem when you're a catcher. This could have been part of the problem with Morrow also. The doctors may have told CJW that MT should be ready by a certain date but maybe he just wasn't.Therefore Wells may not have asked for the medical redshirt.I don't know. It's a shame this is his last year.
