Tickets to University of Alabama football games — including season ticket packages and the BCS National Championship Game — were purchased at face value by 151 state legislators, judges, lobbyists and local officials who avoided the hurdles and extra costs most Crimson Tide fans face.
This oughta get blood going on a slow Sunday in the off season!

When it comes to the Alabama Legislature, my blood now runs so cold it hardly runs; those cretin morons should all be forced to pick taters in Baldwin County for the next 10 years.

How can these people argue that they paid the same as everyone else? Isn't it a fact that you cannot buy season tickets UNLESS you are a member of Tide Pride? How does Taylor get two forms every year to buy his season tickets? I was under the impression that if you didn't have Tide Pride, you were out of luck.

I myself do not see a problem with it. There is not one person in the Tide nation that would not take advantage of the same perks of the job if they were made available to them. Personally I can't even afford to go to more than one game a year because as it is they are priced waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my entertainment budget. I guess what it boils down to in my opinion is ..... If you don't like our elected officials getting deals on Bama tickets next time around vote for an Auburn fan!

True, but it doesn't make it right, I liked twofbyc"s comment best. BTW, that last sentence, is dangerously close to earning a *barn avatar. :eek2:

Barners go to Bama games to watch a great football team anyway, so it wouldn't make any difference which team the legislator is for...:)

Why should it be OK for a public official to receive a "perk" that has nothing to do with carrying out his or her job?

Can't be. The grammar's too good.

This is Freakonomics at work. Requests for tickets are actually up now that public officials have to pay face value for them. The principle at work is that when the tickets were free, there was some level of guilt involved. Taking free tickets doesn't look good to the public. However, they have purchased their guilt now by paying a nominal fee.

If they did their jobs like they were elected to do, then I would be the first one to say "give them free tickets". But when those clowns steal our money through greed, corruption and just plain ineptitude, then, no, they should get nothing but hard labor, IMO.
Violating the public trust is what it is, whether you are doing it through coercion and corruption, or just too damn lazy to do the job you were elected to do- it's all stealing.

This topic isn't new.

An "expose" on free / face tickets to politicians and other persons of influence, and another tangentially related issue about UA faculty and staff getting free or face-only tickets comes out every so often -- about when an aspiring Woodward / Bernstein wannabe decides he might be able to make a reputation on it. Trouble is, it's been going on forever and gets highlighted about every 2 - 3 years, so going over it again isn't really an expose. It's rehash of known facts, played for emotional appeal.

Listen, I'm no fan of the Alabama legislature. I'd like to flush out the whole cesspool -- both parties, both sexes, all races -- and just install every 10,000th name down the voter registration lists. The irony of this story is as someone else mentioned -- the bloodsuckers are now actually paying for the tickets, whereas they used to expect them for free.

Points being: (1) no news here, (2) it's not that big a deal anyway, (3) there is so much other graft, self-dealing and pettiness in that body that getting worked up over this is kind of like getting irritated about a stumped toe when you're on the way in for chemo.

BTW, loved the Freakonomics reference -- that's a great book.

This issue is totally overblown - its not like they used taxpayer funds to buy the tickets (and before you say anything - the salary they get paid is their money). Faculty at UA dont have to members of TP either to get tickets. Face value is what they pay. Should we be jealous of them too?

Seriously, if there werent any perks associated with the job who would want it? I am sure all the legislators are really enjoying having to plug a $400 million hole in the General Fund right now because of the regressive tax system we have in this state and an absolute disdain by us a citizens for any new ways to generate tax revenue. Btw, total tax revenue collected by the state per resident of this state for general fund purposes is around $330/resident while it is around $1100/resident for educational purposes. Its pretty ironic I spent roughly the same amount on TP contributions and football tickets to what is my per capita responsibility toward funding our state government and schools.

There is absolutely no comparison between having the opportunity to buy tickets at face value with gambling kickbacks, sewer bond fraud, and allegations of insider trading. Its one thing to get a perk with the job - its another to act like a criminal with the public trust.

What I find hard to believe is this is a front page story on Sunday when we in this state are presently eliminating virtually all the infrastructure in this state for the mentally ill - laying off hundreds of people who needed those jobs and turning the patients back to the streets, jails, or ill-equipped family members - all because we dont have the revenue to do what is morally right in this state.

Personally, I am past ready for some journalism from our state's newspapers that tell the real story on real issues of this state rather than just inciting us to be jealous of what our neighbor might be getting.

I have been a season ticket holder for 30 years and an original Tide Pride member with a modest income. I have never sold a ticket for anything other than face value. I have attended 4 National Championship games, 3 in New Orleans and 1 in Pasendena. However, this year I didn't have enough points to receive NCG tickets and couldn't afford to pay a thousand plus to a ticket broker.

When I heard Bama was playing Michigan in January at Cowboy Stadium in Dallas, I called the Tide Pride office and was told to call back in February, "we know nothing right now". I read 2 weeks later Michigan had received their 25,000 ticket allotment and sold out immediately. I read LSU received 39,000 tickets last year and wanted to know why Michigan received only 25,000 this year.

I called the Tide Pride office and was told "we are deciding who will receive the tickets. Right now we know nothing." I explained that Michigan had received 25,000 tickets and asked if that's the number Alabama would receive and if so when would we know if we would receive tickets. She said " I don't know anything at this time and most schools don't have Tide Pride programs and at Alabama we do things differently." I asked if tickets would be as hard to get as the NCG and she said "yes probably". Needless to say, I was not happy. I told her the tickets on Stub Hub were $450.00 dollars and up which was 4 to 6 times the face value. She said nothing.

I then called Cowboy Stadium because I heard they would be selling tickets. I spoke with a gentleman in ticket sell management and he told me " the game is sold out, all 80,000 tickets. We only have a few $1,000 tickets." I asked who bought all the tickets and he said" the schools".

I went back to Stub Hub, Ticketmaster and Ebay and found Tide Pride tickets selling for $500.00 in sections 400, the very top of the stadium. The lower sections were in the thousands!!!!

My point, I am not a politician, just a life long Alabama fan that has never received any special treatment for tickets and I am disgusted by the ticket hustlers who buy Bama's tickets to make a profit and the handling of football tickets period!

My big question would be................... Why are you mad at a politician actually paying for something out of their own pocket?
Like the above poster said, there are people who would complain about this, all the while you would jack your price up 100 fold or more. I ask you, which one is more crooked?

The politicians are paying face value without having to fork over big bucks to join Tide Pride. That is the problem. I'm pretty sure they can buy tickets to API games without having to join their version of Tide Pride.

Who's to say they aren't Tide Pride members? What if they were "granted" Tide Pride membership based on their non-monetary contributions to the University - you know, things like overseeing street closures and traffic flow on gamedays, or working on budget committees...?

TideJunkie might not see anything wrong with it, but most of us do.
We have legislatures who use their position to obtain something at a lower price, than what is available to the man on the street,
or you and I... (Sounds unethical to me...)
These guys may get a pass on being investigated by their
'Brothers-In -Crime'
, but the rest of us know it's not right.
If there's a loop hole, it needs to be closed...
Here we are with guys in our legislature being tried for ethics violations & bribery, but others are getting by with a 'Wink and a Nod'
with questionable conduct.
We really need to drain that 'Cess-Pool' we call Goat Hill.

This has been going on for decades.. My first Alabama tickets, all through the 60s, 70s, and 80s, came from a friend of the family who was a State Represetative who pulled for Auburn. He received order blanks for both and gave us the Alabama tickets.

I not saying it was right, but it has been part of college football since the beginning...

Where ever there's BBQ, Bourbon & Football
I don't get a chance to go to many games. That is why my family makes it point to go to A-Day. To be able to experience some form of gameday (though not exactly the same) each year. It seems it has gotten to the point where the "average person" not only can't hardly afford to go to games but can't even get an opportunity to go. I to plan on going to the Bama/Michigan game this season. It's in Dallas which is a hop, skip and a jump from Shreveport. It's the closest Bama will play to us so my dad and I plan on going.

So far I've run into the same things others have mentioned. I've come to accept I'm going to pay out the wazzooo to go to a regular season, college football game. It doesn't matter whether you look on ebay, stub-hub or any other broker. It's going to cost the "average person" some coin to go to this game. I'm not really mad because I'm not in any "club" like Tide Pride or anything like that. But I can understand how people that are a part of "clubs" like these get upset. That is one of the main reasons (I would think) they fork out the money to be a part of the club.

With regard to the politicians. Don't they get enough "perks" with their jobs? :D
