First impressions of Ryan Grubb

I’ve been skeptical of his hire since before it was even made, based on the tearful way he left UW, his brief change of planes in Tuscaloosa before bolting back to the Seahawks, and finally of course his performance in the booth last year. However, I hoped he would’ve learned, and be ready to apply, some lessons.

As one of my favorite sayings in business goes, “Everyone makes mistakes; try to make yours original.“ In other words, learn from the mistakes you make and from those of others.

However, based on that very small sample size, I see no evidence that Ryan Grubb learned from his mistakes in Seattle last year.”; and I fact is making unoriginal mistakes this year. No rhythm or balance in play calling; going away from what works before the defense has made you change by adapting to it; seemingly panic throws early in the game when it was still easily within reach. I’m not prepared to theorize this yet, but it’s reasonable to hypothesize that that’s his play calling style and personality and, judging by the percentage of gray and his goatee. (by the way, guilty as charged here too), I wonder if it might be too late in his career for him to change that style absent a significant, road to Damascus type of event.

I thought the first drive (which was scripted) looked good, but once FSU adjusted, Grubb failed to match it. You can’t ask a first-time starting QB to shoulder the load with no run game and 40+ throws on the road in a hostile environment. AJ McCarron even said on his podcast this week, they have to establish the run to help Simpson, just like they did for him at Penn State in his first road start.

that is One thing I will de definitely miss about CNS, no matter how bad it looked, he didn’t panic, the Team didn’t panic. I guess that’s the difference in culture. The only game I thought we didn’t have a chance during the game under CNS was the CLemson championship game. But we learned after the game most of the staff and half of the players had one foot out the door .

I think Alabama fans owe Sheridan an apology and a medal for enduring what he had to last year.

The play that for me changed the game was the 2nd or 3rd drive we were driving and had it 2nd and 3 and he calls a far side screen and it gets blown up. Next play false start then a sack. What was a 40 something yard FG attempt at worst became a 54 yard attempt that was short. Then the rest of the game with the exception of one drive we are running long developing pass plays.

Yeah, I think it was 87 yards rushing. 59 of which came on the first drive. I think the staff panicked a little because the defense couldn’t get off the field.

Since 1975. But, you couldn't have convinced me that was going to happen after that first drive.

Yeah, I think it was 87 yards rushing. 59 of which came on the first drive. I think the staff panicked a little because the defense couldn’t get off the field.

A good way to keep the defense off the field is commit to the run, especially when you were picking up 4-plus YPC when doing so early. The worst thing a struggling defense is an offense that doesn’t sustain a drive.
You wonder if Grubb and Wommack has had a sit down together to discuss their strategies and how they can be cohesive and help each other as much as possible. Based on the way the game was called, it makes you wonder if they’ve been introduced.

First drive had me optimistic, I wasn’t even worried when the defense gave up a score. Then totally abandoned the running game was baffling.

The 3-3-5 for most major programs has passed its time. Read Chris Brown’s analysis of it in Smart Football. It’s fairly easy to scheme for it especially running the football. Granted, though, our OL looked weak yesterday to say the least. So, I’m inclined to give him a break for that (somewhat). For me the next few weeks will be telling. The talent is there but will be coached up?

Hard to say what we’ve got in Grubb with a bad o line and a qb who isn’t ready to be the starter. Starting rb out too. All that being said there was very little razzle and zero dazzle. They seemed to know what we were doing before we did it most of the night. If you’re playing against a good 3-3-5 you HAVE to be able to run it and we couldn’t. That simple

I have no issue with Grubb. There were a couple of drops and poor throws in big spots. There were a couple of times the QB needed to climb up in the pocket to complete a deep crossing route. All those things can be cleaned up.

At this stage, as a fan and what I had to witness yesterday, I dont feel I owe one person on the team (especthe coaches) an "apology". They all owe me one.

I think he needs to watch some of his old UW tape and remember that he's back in college, and he'll be fine.
