Flag Day is a holiday celebrated on June 14 in the United States. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

The Flag Resolution stated "That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."

I'm still flying the Grand Union Flag until the end of the Month,

after which I will switch to the Virginia flag when Virginia declared independence (June 29th),

and then, on July 4th, switch again to the Betsy Ross. Betsy-Ross-legend-flag.jpeg

Betsy Ross was actually adopted later, but the semiquincentennial is the proper moment to make the switch.

Day after day, a Kalamazoo Navy veteran pays tribute to the country he loves with a saw and a paintbrush.

Dave Garrett creates custom wooden flags, many of which he's given away to local businesses ahead of America's 250th anniversary.

He cuts, sands and coats each piece of wood into 13 stripes and a rectangle, crafting each of the pieces into the United States’ most recognizable symbol.

It’s a routine he’s done so many times his home is covered with his work.

Some with inscribed with the birthday of America and others stretched into the Michigan mitten.

He says his patriotic art began as a way to cope with staying home following more than 30 years on the road as a truck driver.

After he put a few pieces in his yard, word of mouth spread, and now he’s shipped them as far as the Upper Peninsula and Houston, Texas.

He custom-makes each flag but he won’t stray from the basic layout of Old Glory.
