Former Coach Merchandise: Trash it or Keep it?

I still have a Wimp Sanderson hand held mask from a Bama home game against LSU. I think it was called Wimp night or something. Anyways, we beat LSU and on the way home it had snowed and we had a slow journey getting home. It was much more pleasant a ride though because of the win.;)

The thing is I kept it and when I see it it takes me back to those fond memories.

In the case of Dubose, Fran, and Shula, try to remember something good about their stay. Like Dubose winning the the SEC and beating Spurrior twice in one season. Even Diddy couldn't do that! And Frans beat down of Tubs in Jordan Hare 31-7 brings back a great memory. And finally have we forgotten Shula's beat down of Urban Meyer?

Now I ran across an A-Day program with coach Price on it cleaning the other day that I tossed. But if I had been with him at that GO-GO that night I would have kept it!;)

I remember when I was in school, a bunch of people took their Fran bobbleheads to the old university golf course and took their 3-irons to them.

I would burn anything else that was Coach Fran.

I would dish-towel any shula t-shirts, but I'd keep anything else that was signed.

This years despised former coach will someday be another piece of Bama football lore. And their paraphernalia will be collectible in time. Keep that Francionne autographed cap and Shula Bobblehead doll in the attic somewhere, they may come back into favor.

LSU once had a coach who took us to a national championship but soon thereafter left for his dream job after assuring everyone that he wouldn't. In time he took a job as a rival coach in the SEC facing LSU. He was booed in Tiger Stadium. He burned his bridges many fans said and he would never be forgiven.

Eight years later, the same Paul Dietzel was named Athletic Director at LSU. And a Dietzel signature on a 1958 game program will bring you $400!

Think I'm getting rid of my purple NICK C'EST BON T-shirt? Not a chance. It's in the plastic bin from Wal-Mart with my Bear Bryant Coca-Cola bottle, my TUCK FULANE bumper sticker, and my Pat Dye tie. Some day they'll be on the wall at a sports bar in Mobile.

What's funny about Dietzel is that he is a great signer through the mail. I got it on a basic LSU item to go with my 1958 Bama team signed ball. I am working on getting some of the LUS teams auto's to have a cool set.

I have my Mike Shula personalized ("Mike, Get well soon! Roll Tide! Mike Shula), signed football right there on the shelf @ the office. However, my reasons are different. It was procured for me by a friend who used to coach @ USM & brought to me when I was recovering from my 1st cancer surgery in Dec. 05. My friend was in last-minute desperate recruiting mode all over AL, & yet took the time to line up the autograph from Coach Shula, and to drop it by my house. One of the more thoughtful, moving gifts I've ever received.

exiled (dang allergies...they flare up every time I talk about my signed football...;))

I have a buddy who put a noose around his Fran bobblehead and had it hanging from the top of a bookshelf. That was, until the head fell off. He still has the noose around the neck as it stands on the shelf -- head re-attached.

As far as Shula goes, at least he had some credibility as a player. I've still got a signed ball, but I put it with the signed footballs of other former Tide players.

Good post with some interesting replies....
