24. Alabama — 2007 Record: 7-6

Nick Saban's first season was supposed to be about building towards the future, and now the future has to be now. The offensive line has the potential to be the best in the SEC, while all the top running backs, and QB John Parker Wilson, return in the backfield. The receiving corps has to replace D.J. Hall and Matt Caddell, while the defense has to find replacement for end Wallace Gilberry, two linebackers and top CB Simeon Castille.
For the complete listing mash here.

These sport experts (ex-something that was; spert - a fast drip) just don't give up. How many times does OSU have to be spanked by the SEC before they quit promoting them as #1. OSU consistently plays a weak schedule in and out of the conference so if it's just numbers taken into consideration they look good every year at 11-1, 12-0, etc. Then they play maybe a twice beaten SEC team and get spanked.

I'm not sure about Georgia or OK. W.Va - a joke. I would'nt be surprised if Bama does much better in November. I can't see CNS allowing another bookgate to defocus the team. With better strength at all positions, more competition for starting time, I do look for significant improvement in the team despite playing the toughest games on the road.

Georgia's the only team that should be #1. Finished very strong, ended season ranked high, returns all key personnel--no one else meets this criteria.

I have to agree: OSU may not deserve to drop off the face of the earth, but #1 ranking? I guess people are going to try to force them into another MNCG at someone else's expense (probably UGA's--if the poll manipulators/fixers are smarter this time around, anyway). How long will it be until and SEC team enjoys the #1 ranking to start the season ahead of the rest? When was the last time it's even happened?

The only thing that matters is where teams are ranked AFTER the bowl games are played. The end of the season poll is the only one that matters. Of course, I suppose some would argue that the final poll of the regular season decides who plays in the championship game, which is true. I guess I will change my stance to this: the only two polls that matter are the ones at the end of the regular season and at the end of the bowl games. There, that should clear it up. I think the SEC teams have shown they can take care of business in championship games when given the chance.

I believe the boogs were ranked #1 going into the 2003 season, but they promptly got whacked 23-0 by USC and 17-3 by GaTech. And they wonder why they get little or no respect.

Wasn't LSU ranked #1 just this season? And AU was a few seasons back until they promptly lost their first two games. So not really sure where the conspiracy theory is coming from.

Yes, LSU was ranked #1 during the season. But LSU was not ranked #1 to start the season.

Point is there's a huge disparity between where SEC teams start off ranked and where they finish. One of these days it could be the difference between being in the title game and being #3.
