...the Panama City News Herald had an article about how FSU picked the name seminoles.

From the article...

Students balloted in October 1947 after the choices had been narrowed to include “Statesman,” “Tarpons” and “Crackers.”
These choices were culled from a pool of dozens of others: Swamprats, Sunshiners, Red Tide, Fleas, Pinheads and even Tallywhackers

Could you imagine if they would have voted in any of the last three names. Hey at least they wouldn't have this problem with the NCAA....then again not sure Tallywhackers would be PC today either :p

LOL!!!!

Tallywhackers!!!

I hope I'm not the only one getting "Porky's" flashbacks.

Pinheads?

Why in the name of what is holy...would someone even remotely want that nick name?

Did it have some alternative meaning behind it? Help me, pope.

Hey, Croakers works for me! How about the Bow-downs? Common everybody, let's all pitch in & help our brothers to the south! Let's get REALLY imaginative! ;)

But the seminoles is a way cooler name. The few indians that are causing all of this unamerican activity dont understand. The mascots are chosen because they are very cool names. Still they whine. Go figure.

HEY I work in Tallahassee...so ...

can the tallywacker refrence it's tallawhacky..cause they are all screwed up....

Those are terrible choices. Florida State Crackers? Yeah, that's a good idea.

"cracker" doesn't mean the same thing to floridians that it does in other parts of the country. it's a historical reference to the cowboys who would crack whips at cattle when driving them across the central part of the state.

granted, it would still be a pretty stupid name...but it's not the same as calling a white person a cracker in, say, alabama, where the term "cracker" is a pejorative aimed at decedants of the scots-irish immigrants who settled the backcountry in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and who had a bad reputation for distasteful, or "cracking," folk humor and violence fueled by alcoholism.

For FSU this is appropriate, if in fact they were the crackers.... Put this on each one that has a had a run in with the law, the LB corps might be a good place to start.
