I am getting my brother in law's old BBQ Pit. IT is about 20 years old so it is well seasoned. He is getting a divorce so he is downsizing. IT is the type with the smoker box built on to it. It has some surface rust on the outside of it. Couple of questions :

1. I want to sand off the surface rust. Should I prime it and repaint where I sand ?

2. What kind of primer and paint is good for high heat like a grill ?

3. Should I sand prime and paint the entire outside ? It is in pretty decent shape otherwise.

Thanks

I would sand and paint the whole pit. Use a high temp paint according to their directions. You might be able to get some from David Klose at
1-800-487-7487 Factory
1-713-686-8720 Factory
1-713-686-8793 Fax
Or if you are in the Houston area stop by at 2216 west 34th Street.

Thanks Bayou. I know exactly where 34th street is. Not too far from where I work.

Rustoleum makes a high heat spray paint that runs about $5 a can (Lowe's & Wal Mart) It is good up to 1200 degrees and is for smokers, grills and wood stoves.....just make sure the humidity is in the range as specified on the can. I used this on a wood stove I bought a couple weeks ago.

If you stop by his shop take a look at his products. I have a backyard chef smoker I bought probably 7-8 years ago and it is still my favorite grill even though it takes a lot of work to get it smoking it's a labor of love. The man really knows how to build a pit.
