Getting Ready for Spring Battles!

Here are my sources...LOL!

After hearing this "angle," I agree that maybe Russell is at an advantage.

Jimmy Stein said something that tips it, IMO. Basically, that AM is probably close to his ceiling. And we all believe, Russell is, obviously, NOT. But, in addition, Russell also has a much bigger "wow" factor potential, which is what I think we all want in a QB. Now, that might bring more freshman errors, but the upside may be probably worth it!!!

And, when you think about it, if it is this close at this point, there's a good chance Russell pulls away toward the fall!

The word you’re looking for is “competent”. Not awesome, not other worldly, just competent.

Last year would’ve been a little different if they were.

Indeed... Even Bill Curry had lines that at least knew their assignments and could hold a block long enough to let the play develop, even if they weren't physical.

Last year was one of the worst OLs I've seen in 40+ years of watching football!

I've been out of the loop for a while but keeping eye on the spring practice and basketball tournament. Reading the articles, watching videos since Friday on scrimmages, and all... ... The vibe I'm getting, and this is strictly my opinion.

I believe Russell will be the starter...... eventually. Both QBs are competing hard this spring, and they both made great play during scrimmage. I would say in my opinion, nobody is pulling away as of right now. I think as of now, I wouldn't be so quick to say Russell will start this fall. Just let everything play out and see what happens in August.

Glad to see Ryan William-Coleman back.

One thing I've been very impressed with is the OL play. You can definitely see improvement this spring. Lot of focus on basic concept of blocking, pulling and etc. I'll say this: I'm glad those guys transferred out of Alabama because what we have coming in is sgnificantly improved than what we had last year.

DL- This potentially could be one of the nastiest DL personnel groups we could have.

I agree in that I think the QB competition with continue into the season.

I think the 1st 3-4 games will be a live fire audition and whoever plays the best and most mistake free will be the Starter.

Neither guy has real experience and with it still being so close I don’t think a final call will be made off practices and scrimmages.

I think either guy will be fine though and we are in good shape with those two being QB1 and QB2 in any order.

I’m more concerned with the OL and RB situations.

We really need both of those units to come together into a clear picture before game 1.

I’m a bit concerned about WR too.

We lost a ton of reliable consistency with Germ and Horton.

I do feel really good about Brooks though and I think Rogers will help out.

Scott has a lot of potential and I hope Morgan can find a role.

Lots of question marks after that. Lots.

If the competition goes into the season Alabama is toast once again.

Sink or swim, pick one and give them the majority of the reps. Build the familiarity with the offense, get the layers established so that in the middle of the season when there is tape out on these guys you can swap things up.

If the loser transfers, that’s just what’s going to have to happen.

I don’t think it would be a death blow to the season to get both guys prepared.

Hurts and Barnett went into 2016 vs USCw

Barnett wet the bed and Hurts was unflappable and the rest is history.

If we had just given the job to Barnett and gave him all the reps that year could have been a disaster.

I’d rather keep both Mack and Russell locked in and competing.

The last thing I want to see is one guy check out then the other gets injured and then Jett Thomalla is your starter as a TF.

Then we’d be toast.

Hurts was the first dual threat quarterback at Alabama in a long time, you could argue that was where most of his effectiveness came from. Barnett only got the nod because he was the upperclassman, the same reason Hurts kept his job over Tua for most of that season. Neither of these guys are Hurts or Tua.

I’m not ready to fire Grubb yet, but he’s got to make a decision and get some layers to this offense so it doesn’t bog down later in the year. You can only do that by finding your guy and going forward.

Alabama doesn’t have the nil funds to squirrel away starting level talent at the quarterback position. NFL teams take these gambles all the time. Find your starter and go forward.

If that's the source, I'm not sure there's enough there to say much yet in either's favor. Sounds like both had really good days. KR had a couple more big splash plays, but also had so lower lows in that he threw a pick 6. AM didn't have quite as much flash, but also did not have any bad plays.
I agree...just two guys opinions, but, they both said persuasive things that I think favor both.

The fact Russell is apparently neck and neck with a guy who has 4 years in the program is significant. If Mack is closer to his ceiling and KR has already caught him, that probably confirms the "talent ceiling" of KR is alot higher!

Secondly, the argument that coaches/fans want one of them to "win" the battle maybe favors Mack since he may be the one who is safest; the one who runs the offense with fewer mistakes.

However, this reminds me of the Milroe/Simson battle in 2024 when they both made mistakes (apparently TS make more) and so Jalen Milroe became the starter, eventually.

I don't get the impression this situation is like that. It sounds like both have alot of potential, but again, IMO Russell's talent and abilities to make explosive plays may push him to the top.

I see your point but I guess imo we are to a point playing to set up next year this season.

Either guy would literally have to be the next coming of Heisman seasons Cam Newton or Jayden Daniels for us to be a NC contender this year.

We have basically rebuilt the entire Offense and made position Coaching changes.

We again jmo need to get QB right this year to set up next year.

I don’t trust any of these ‘Intel’ Bama sites.

They are always saying over the top sensational things.

I’d wait to see what JessN or 81usaf92 says to feel like you are getting accurate reliable info.

You’re dead on: this is a set the foundation type of year. Let’s see if they can build on this, establish some culture, and maybe get some recruiting success off it.

If that's what the decision is based on, I don't think it's even close...you got to got with Russell!!!

To set up next year? As in this coming season or after? This is year 3 in NIL/portal year it should be a prove it year not set up for the next year again. Even pre NIL and portal year 3 is the prove it/show it year. He has his players, he has his QB that has been in the system what 4 years?

If the defense is as good or better than last year then the offense just needs to take a little step forward which should be easy since they are going from a historically bad o line.

Grubb isn’t helping himself saying o line guys won spots and now guys are moving again. Several starter types out on both lines so they wouldn’t know until fall anyway so confidence in Grubb isn’t growing.

Defense seems like they should be improved though, by how much idk.

I don’t think it’s a slam dunk either way.

We have no idea who is better until we see them with the 1’s vs real competitive SEC competition and the game is on the line.

Mack still has 2 years to play and Russell probably has 3-4 years.

The winner will most likely be our guy next year too.
